I am here once again to ask for prayers for both my wife and myself. We went to the Orthopedic surgeon on Monday morning. After X-rays on her knee, and then my shoulder we were told that Vivian has a torn meniscus and needs an MRI, and possibly surgery. I have something called "frozen shoulder." I have been referred to Benchmark Physical therapy. I was told that I also may have to have surgery. It seems that we have been being hit right and left with physical challenges this past 18 months, but, we know the Great Physician. We would appreciate your prayers as we walk through this valley. Thanks in advance.

swathdiver reacted to HappyChristian in Can the pastors wife, also be the secretary of the church ?
This would depend upon the church's constitution - whether or not the pastor's wife can be secretary, and even if the congregation would vote on it or not.
Our constitution specifies that there are two elected offices - pastor and deacon. Those are the two that the congregation votes on. Our constitution states that other positions, for lack of a better word, are appointed by the pastor.
When hubs became pastor, there was a different secretary. For the first almost year, it was left that way. They had voted on that position before we came, and that's  fine. So hubs explained to people that he was going to appoint me. Not because the person doing it was doing it badly, she wasn't. But it was extremely difficult to do basic stuff like correspondence, etc., because our building is not big enough for an office. So everything was kept at our house.  I did do secretarial work for him (as in welcome letters, etc.), but he wanted it all in a central location/person. Also, she had no printer, so she wasn't able to print off things like the financial record for the business meeting, etc. His decision was a wise one, even though it increased my work load (at least I can do it from home, which is nice).
Our hope is to one day have a church office with a couple of ladies (because my hubs cannot be there with just one lady) whom we can pay for their services. I do not get paid (nor did the lady before me).
Does this give room for my hubs to do what he wishes? No, absolutely not. The church was only having one annual business meeting. At that same meeting where he announced I would be the church secretary he told everyone that he wanted us to go to a quarterly meeting so that members could see more often where their monies are going. So he actually brought about more transparency.

Sadly, I've just caught up to Jim's passing on to glory. Dave W has summed up anything I could possibly add. I'll see Jim again one day because of Jesus and for His sake.

    One final update from Linda:
"I would like to do one last update. He was buried yesterday. I really don't know what to say other than that. A chapter in my life has ended as his is now gone. I will miss him for a very long time.   I wanted to give an update on the official cause of death: Acute ischemic stroke.   I will again say my condolences to those who loved and cared about him. I am having a gravestone made for him. It is white, about the size of legal paper. It will take months for them to make it, but they will place it on his grave once it is finished. Nicole, Jim jr, and I have decided to have this wording on it:   In memory of James David Foley Sr. Born December 6, 1942  -Died July 29, 2023 at 80 years of age Beloved by all who Knew him     I also want to thank all those who donated money so he could have his wish of being buried next to his late wife Marcia Foley.    Thank You Linda"

"Jim passed away at 8:24pm tonight - July 29, 2023. He lived a good long life. He didn't think he would make it much past his mid 70s... but he did. Rest in peace My Love.   Linda"

I'm sure this email was hard for Linda to write:
"I have set up donations for Jim's burial:   To Jim's many friends and family   Please know that your support means everything to me as I navigate this painful time. Even though I realized his life was coming to an end after 80 years, nothing prepared me for it happening so soon. We both thought we would have a few more years together.   We did not even consider Jim going to surgery and not coming out feeling better and having more energy. However he never woke up. He had several small strokes during the surgery. As you may know by now, he is off life support and being kept comfortable till his body no longer can sustain his life. As hard as this time is, I are still continuing to honor his wishes as to where he is finally laid to rest and where he wanted that to be.   Many of you have reached out to me and have asked how you can help me during this time. I really want to honor Jim’s wishes and I plan to do everything I can to make his wishes come true. One of his long standing desires was to be buried next to his late wife Marcia.    Someone has donated the plot for him, and another is building a casket. However, it is going to cost around another $5,000 more to actually get him laid to rest. If you are able to, and comfortable doing so, I would really appreciate any donation, big or small, towards fulfilling his desire to be buried next to Marcia.   Funds for his funeral cost may be sent to: https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8WcvSEZEvi   Thank you again for your support during this time.   With appreciation, Jim Foley’s, wife Linda"

Wow, in the sense that I wasn't expecting to see something like this today - I haven’t visited the message boards for a while, as I have had problems with my computer and I usually access Online Baptist on it. Praying for the Lord to give Jim peace (if he is at all aware of what is going on), and for the Lord to comfort his family.
Please don't take this as flippant or trying to promote myself, but I have found that the Lord uses some of my poems to comfort and strengthen family members in difficult times like this. These two may be a strength and a reminder of the Lord's care and promises at this time.

JW is not a denomination, it is a cult. They worship a false Christ. If this is your family, I am so sorry. Your daughter has made her choice, as an adult, and the fault and consequences will be hers, not yours. She has chosen a hard path.

I believe it is possible for true believers to be ensnared in the JW organization, not realizing what it is. I don’t know if that is the case of this young man or not. You are in an excellent position to both encourage your daughter in the faith (and maybe make sure of her salvation), and to graciously witness truth to this young man. Anyone can be saved!

It wouldn't be God that "let us down." It would be the daughters poor choice in a marriage partner as far as religious beliefs go. The husband may be a very honest reliable, loving and gentle man. God can always turn that situation around. But the likelyhood of that happening is less than 10 % because it is the husband who is a JW. He is the head of the home. Parents, friends and the church can pray for the husbands eyes to be opened to the truth.

Your daughter, being raised up in a Christian Christ centered home, meets a Jehovah witness gentleman, and they get married. What is the chance of your daughter changing denominations?  We know that each case can be different. What is the percentage that he can become a Christian. Lastly, how would you feel? Would you feel that God let you down in someway?

I posted this on my facebook page so I figured I'd post it here as well. We held a Youth Rally yesterday with Pastor John Barnes preaching and I bought these bubble balls for the teens to play with. What a crazy game as the teens love it. Anyone ever play with these?
Make sure the parents sign waivers before they play. lol

Linda, we appreciate your keeping us updated.  While we never met in person, I enjoyed knowing Jim via this forum. He was a godly example and a good administrator. I know he prayed for my family during various hard times, and that has always been a blessing to my heart.
We (my hubs and I) are so very sorry for the results of this journey...other than we know that Jim will be in Glory, whole, and waiting for you. We will continue to keep you in our prayers as you walk this path. God bless you and your family, Linda.

Linda, my heart is so burdened and heavy for you.  I'm so glad that you have our Lord Jesus, the Spirit--our great Comforter.  I'm just over on the other side of Mt. Shasta from you, and it was our church that helped to put the roofing on yours just a short while back.  One of the fellas that attends your church has a brother that goes to our church.  I will share with our Pastor and ask for prayer for you and for the family and friends and your church.  I'm lifting you up in much prayer.

Over the last few months before Jim had his surgery - in my grief now - I had forgotten. In Jim's prayers, that I heard, he often dwelled on his home in heaven and distinguished it from his home in heaven and his home on earth. To most people that may not mean anything, but for me, it told a lot. He had never really done that before a few months ago.
Now that he is not waking up, the doctors have their reasons why. His brain is severely damaged by the stroke. If he did wake up it is likely that he wouldn’t be able to see, speak, feed himself, or breathe on his own. He has also developed an infection (Pneumonia) in his lungs. But I think there is an added reason - he doesn't want to wake up. He really has nothing to look forward to, he hated what the neuropathy was doing to him and it was getting worse, to the point that at some point he wouldn't have been able to do anything but sit in his chair and wait to die, which he felt he was already doing.
I really think he was ready to go months ago, long before he knew about his heart problem. Even though he did have great hope that he would recover from his surgery and feel better and have more energy. I also feel he was torn between the desire to die and leaving me a widow. But there is also that he felt trapped in his body.
So I have decided that I will let him die peacefully. I think he has a few more days before he has to have the stomach feeding portal installed. I have told them not to. It will also be at that time I will have them remove his ventilator so he can pass peacefully. There really is no hope he will recover, but even if there was - recover to what? To continue his neuropathy deterioration? I really think he doesn't want that, and is one reason he hasn't woke up.
I am sorry, so very sorry. Not just for me, but for him, his family, and his close friends. I don't know the exact date they will do this, but it will happen soon. I will go and see him one last time tomorrow and say my goodbyes. I cannot bear to watch him die. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. But he would not want to live like this, and I am abiding by his wishes. Please know, my heart goes out to you.
    Linda, his wife

    Here is the latest:
"As I said last night I spoke with the Neurologist yesterday. The neurologist had another CT scan performed yesterday afternoon. The results show that he experienced several strokes to various areas of his brain during surgery. What the Doctor does not know yet is the extent of damage done to those areas of the brain. The neurologist cannot evaluate the brain damage until Jimmy wakes up from the coma.  If he does wake up, then the Doctor will have a better idea of the extent of brain damage. I wish I could give more concrete answers but we just don’t know yet. The Doctors said his condition is very serious but we can only wait to see if he wakes up to know more.    I won't be sending any more updates until we actually know more than this.    Linda"

Sorry I didn't add this update earlier - we were at a discipleship meeting. It doesn't sound good, but here is what Linda said:
"I did talk to the neurologist. But give me a little bit to digest the information I received, so I don't give it to you wrong. I will get back to you tomorrow. Please be patient with me.  I will say there is some chance he might somewhat recover, but it would not be soon. The stroke did occur during his surgery."
