  1. @RebeccaYes, it's good to be accurate; I agree. If we actually looked at a page from the 1611 edition, it would have many archaisms in it. There were other revisions done of the King James: in 1629, 1638 and 1762; what is commonly known as the King James is from 1769. Print formats vary greatly also; and in Commonwealth countries Crown Copyright applies, a fact not realized by many citizens of English-speaking republics. Some editions (updates?) of the King James are so light that their publishers do not even refer to them as separate revisions; e.g., the KJ21.
  2. @E MoralesInteresting post! In Philippians 4.3 Paul says: "And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life." The example you gave of course predates that of Philippians and relates to the Lord Jesus Himself. @E MoralesPF: Effecitve gif there...
  3. @trapperhoneySome helpful thoughts there indeed!
  4. Thanks. guys, for the contribs. ? @SureWord @Danny Carlton
  5. I posted a favorite hymn not long ago. So, does anyone else have a favorite? (I'll probably post another of mine in due course...)
  6. I see in this article that conservative business wear can include neckties for men and earrings for women: https://work.chron.com/dress-part-sales-professional-3443.html There are probably numerous other sources which might give broadly the same idea. To me (imho) the idea of keeping a box of ties which men entering a church building are compelled to wear is bizarre. If an Asian businessman visiting from his country came to an office in North America wearing a perfectly smart suit but no necktie, to buy something from a company, no one would give him a hard time. IMHO, if someone comes into a service in order to hear the Word of God and is not wearing a necktie, it would be odd for anyone to want to give him a hard time, as if his desire to hear the Word of God is supposedly authenticated only at the moment he puts on a necktie.
  7. My wife seems pleased I wear the wedding ring she gave me....:) Kind of: "He's off limits!" ? At the small, independent church that we go to, some of the young men and boys have worn earrings; often they are rather unobtrusive, anyway. I remember nearly 40 years ago being at various baptisms by immersion in different places connected with independent churches and it was the widespread custom among young men then to wear earrings and indeed I think some of the young men being baptized then did also. As regards the custom of women wearing 2 each side, etc., well this has been going on for several decades; if a teen and her mom had doubles put in in the late 70s, for example, an 18 year old would be 60 now and if her mom was 48 then, she would be 90 now. It's thoroughly established and unremarkable now for women of all ages. (Post partly in response to another post, now deleted.)
  8. I can well see how where a place believes in baptismal regeneration it's just not going to work....
  9. Hi @trapperhoneyI've heard the term, using the fleece, to refer generally to persistent prayerful enquiry of God as to His will about specific matters...
  10. @SalyanI'm not so sharp at maths either....:)
  11. Hi @SalyanInteresting avatar picture there; so does it refer to the Shield of Faith (Ephesians 6), perhaps?

Oh okay! ? I've never been to the L'Anse-aux-Meadows site in NL, but I'd like to...

  12. @trapperhoneyThank-you; and I'm sorry about your husband's condition. My wife has thought for a while that she has the beginnings of arthritis although it seems like what she goes through isn't anything like what you said your husband has. I saw this informational video by a medical doctor about CBD, and thought it was helpful: I suppose there is the issue of how to ingest very low amounts of hemp derived CBD. A lot of baptist Christians might definitely prefer not to smoke it. The emerging possibilities of vaping might be regarded by some as less inappropriate. Otherwise another option might of course be baking it into cookies, etc. The whole culture of diets and herbs with medicinal value - under the Creator - is an absorbing area and of course individuals will have their own preferences and conclusions. I hope your husband's condition does not degenerate more.
  13. Hi @trapperhoney; great header verse from Acts 20.24! I've thought a lot about that verse in the past...

Thank you! It marked a definite change in my life. Before this I had used verses from Psalms that reflected the isolation I felt in life, then when my father passed away God gave me Deut. 31:8 which was comforting. So after I emerged from my "mourning" God gave me this verse, and it has been my constant.

"And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed." Yes, this is a great verse also, (Deut. 31.8)

  14. @RebeccaAs discussed, above, people should be able to get genuine medical benefit with a clear conscience, imho. As @trapperhoney put it excellently, "God put plants/herbs here for our benefit. If there is a legitimate health/medical benefit from ANY herb I support it. There is always a danger of abuse, so it needs to be handled carefully. I do not support "recreational" use of any herb/drug. As to specific herbs, that is up to the individual's judgment and conscience to use responsibly."
  15. When this passing world is done When has sunk yon glaring sun When I stand with Christ on high Looking o'er life's history Then Lord shall I fully know Not till then how much I owe When I stand before the throne Dressed in beauty not my own When I see thee as thou are Love thee with unsinning heart Then Lord shall I fully know Not till then how much I owe When the praise of heaven I hear Loud as thunders to the ear Loud as many waters noise Sweets as harps melodious voice Then Lord shall I fully know Not till then how much I owe E'en on earth as through a glass Darkly let thy glory pass Make forgiveness feel so sweet Make thy Spirit's help so meet E'en on earth Lord make me know Something of how much I owe Robert Murray M'Cheyne
  16. Hi @Rebecca So is medicinal marijuana legal in Taiwan?(I'm not talking about 'opium den' type establishments; more the medicinal use of resin for baking in cookies, and so forth...)
  17. I guess my question also would be about the nice young lady, Is she 18 yet?
  18. Ms. trapperhoney: Yes, it's a pity that for years before it was widely legalized some of the huge pharmaceutical companies were raking in enormous profits for patent monopolies of conventional meds, when, altenatives, if safely researched, based on cannabis resin could have cut the costs greatly for those who were ill. (Remarkable that along the border with Mexico and Canada, seniors would cross the border to buy the same conventional meds sometimes for 1/20th of the cost.) There was a video of a lady in Vancouver, Canada using a vending machine from the Vancouver Pain Society and becoming the first vending machine customer for marijuana: if the person is a genuine patient, I think like you that it can be a positive thing. Probably baking cookies into which very carefully measured cannabis resin has been added is a better way of ingesting it medicinally rather than smoking it, isn't it? (An added advantage to its open market availability is that it puts dealers out of business.) These issues have proven to be rather searching for some Christians, but people should be able to get genuine medical benefit with a clear conscience, imho. Yes, Peter's vision in Acts is a very significant passage, I think.
  19. Ms. trapperhoney: So on the subject of diet and natural remedies, etc., what do you think of herbal remedies and marijuana, etc.?
  20. Hi @Rebecca Kindness is linked with courtesy; and I guess culture comes into play also. Titus 3 speaks of kindness : "But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life."
  21. ...if you think, while living in Key West, Florida, the nearest likeminded believer with whom you can enjoy proper fellowship lives in Yukon...
  22. Hi @RebeccaI was under the definite impression it had fallen into abeyance years ago...
  23. "Be still, and know that I am God". (Psalm 46.10) Luther wrote his hymn 'A mighty fortress is our God', based on Psalm 46. Good to reflect that amidst all the tumultuous things that were going on in his life, an inner peace from God informed his thoughts.
  24. It's interesting also that in Psalm 40 the bondservant imagery is used: "Mine ears hast Thou opened"; i.e., opened = Hebrew, digged, i.e, pierced. This thematically links in general terms with Philippians 2: the 'form of a Servant'.
