If you do not know who the Getty's are, please look them up before posting.
Have you noticed that the new Majesty hymnal contains music from the Gettys/Sovereign Grace? What is your opinion on that? I find it an outrage that they are digging through garbage to find good music. I think it is sad I can't just buy a CD from a trusted source without knowing if there is CCM behind the music. Why aren't pastors stepping up and writing the Hamiltons? Why aren't we fighting for our music? Why have we stopped caring about associations? Don't people understand as soon as a weaker Christian hears you listening to something like "Amazing Grace My Chains are Gone" they will automatically assume you would listen to Chris Tomlin? We will loose my generation if we do not stand true.

I use a Thompson Chain reference Bible, love it! I also have an very old dictionary (1829 I think?) to help me understand :)

    John,
you have raised a good point about the consistency in our critique of music. I understand exactly what you are saying, that there seems to be a double standard in how we use an argument against a modern song that, if applied evenly, would disqualify what is now a standard hymn.
Here is my take on that issue:
It takes a long time to see the fruit born of a seed. We can very easily look back through the corridors of time and see what songs have been a tremedous blessing and help to God's people, despite the author's weaknesses/faults, etc.
For instance, we can easily point out that Fanny Crosby wrote secular tunes, and dismiss all of her hymnody.
However, here is where the fruit is borne out.
She wrote literally 1,000's of hymns, yet how many of them do we actually have in our hymnbooks today, and out of that small selection, how many do we actually sing on any kind of a regular basis?
Maybe 15? 20? I would say 20 would be the very, very most.
So the overall ratio of Fanny Crosby's songs that we actually sing vs. the overall number of songs she wrote is a very, very small percentage.

So let me make the appropriate application.
Bill and Gloria Gaither have written (x) number of songs (I have no idea how many they have written - I just know they have written a large number of songs.) Out of all the songs they have written, I can only think of a very small handful of songs that are anywhere near appropriate for church specials (at least IMO - and I know some probably would not sing ANYTHING by the Gaithers....more power to you! REMEMBER...this is just an illustration!)

My point is this....there could very well indeed be some modern songs written by CCM artists that actually have good words. The music could even be cleaned up to be suitable for a conservatively minded Baptist Church.
The problem is ASSOCIATION. By singing those songs in our churches, we are by default ENDORSING the current "ministry" of people that we would otherwise condemn on many fronts - doctrine, practice, separation, methods, etc., etc., etc. While many people might be blessed by the song because they have no idea who wrote it, or even who the authors are, let's not kid ourselves into thinking that there would not be a sizable percentage of people in the church who DO know the songs from the CCM artists. THose are the people that will see the inconsistency in our stated/preached position on music, and the use of the very same music that we condemn from the pulpits.

If in fact these modern songs are any good, they will stand the test of time, just like that very small percentage of Fanny Crosby's songs did and Bill Gaither's songs have.

Down here in the South, Southern Gospel music is such a problem that I avoid Gaither's songs because I don't want anyone to think that I condone his music or lifestyle or "ministry" or anything like that.

"Abstain from all APPEARANCE of evil."

Anyway, maybe that helps someone out there understand why some of us have such a problem with the Hamiltons including modern CCM songs in their songbooks.
I mean, that video someone posted - the performers do everything that Garlock and Hamilton told us NOT to do....so why would they use their music??? (FWIW - I really could not tell the difference MUSICALLY from there performance and a typical rock band performance....same lighting, same makeup, same musical structure, same chord progression, same repetitive riffs, etc.....)

The bottom line is this.....we are in Laodicean times....God's people are more interested in pleasing their FLESH than pleasing God....and will use any excuse to do so!

PS - Ian, I disagree with you...the words and music of Onward Christian Soldiers is vastly superior to the posted video. At least the music makes you think of marching!

    In Christ,

But as David Cloud says in one of his articles, singing their hymns is not going to lead you to becaome an infant baptist, but with the songs of charismatics like Townend and Kendrick, by singing their songs, we open the door to our young people bying their CDs, and then becoming attracted to that kind of worship. I say to our church that we would not have these people preach in our church, but by singing their songs we are letting them in by the back door, however sound that particualr song seems.

Your point is contrary to sound doctrine. The Getty's are providing and promoting contemporary Christian music dressed up as "modern hymns". They are entertainers providing so-called "spiritual" entertainment but nothing spiritual (from a Biblical perspective) will ever come from such a polluted fountain. And by the way, just because a song "sounds good" when played on the piano or organ does not necessarily mean that the song is good. Many rock songs "sound good" when listened to by the carnal person.

Matthew 7:18 - "A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit."

Matthew 12:33 - "Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit."

I can only conclude from the above statements that:

#1 - You are trying to rationalize and justify the usage of CCM as being acceptable.

#2 - You are ignoring (or refusing to accept) the obvious teachings of the scriptures.

The Bible teaches us that truly spiritual people cannot bring forth carnality.

The usage of rock music proves that the Getty's are operating on a carnal basis and therefore anything that they produce is corrupted by their carnality. It does not matter if the words of their songs are "scriptural" or even scripture quotations. This is why the so-called "modern hymn movement" is so wrong. It is leading undiscerning people to swallow the devil's lies.

You can call it "Pharisaical taste" if you like, but you are feasting on carnality which leads to destruction.

From the 'for what it's worth department', I grew up in a broken home, as some call it. My Dad got remarried, divorced, remarried, divorced. There were, besides my step mothers, various women spending the night. Drinking to excess was normal. You get the picture.

I read and studied the Bible, spent as much time at church as possible, attended school and worked. God is faithful. He knows and will provide for His children.

The heretical teaching of double inspiration goes contrary to this board. We have had numerous individuals come through that spouted this nonsense and have driven a number of good people away.

Preservation and Inspiration are not the same and are not interchangeable. God inspired His Word through the original penmen. God then preserved his Word for every generation. These are two entirely separate doctrines. What Irishman and Ruckman suggest is that God re-inspired the KJV translators when they penned the KJV. They elevate the KJV above the greek and the Hebrew. Ruckman believes that if you don't get saved through the KJV, then you didn't get saved. He believes that all the people of the world need to learn English because the KJV is the only "True" Bible.

If you compare translations in Spanish, French, and any other language and then have them translated to English, you will find that they are not word for word with the KJV. When you translate from one language to another, you lose things. God inspired His Word in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. It has been preserved for every generation through a number of translations over time. Each of those translation can be held up and called "The Inspired Word of God"

I love my KJV and don't own another translation. However, if a group of Godly men would make a modern translation, I would consider it and if it passes the evaluation process that the KJV went through, could hold it up and call it the Word of God also. This will never happen, because good men who could do this aren't interested, which is fine with me. The problem with the MV's are they base their translation on a corrupted or perverted text.

If you hold to this heretical teaching of double inspiration, which has been labeled Ruckmanism (after it's founder), take it somewhere else. We don't want it here.

Irishman - The two passages clearly teach inspiration being with the original penmen, not with people who copy or translate. Take your heretical double inspiration to another board. It is not welcome here.

Deut. 22:5 does dovetail with Romans 1, though, and so the distinction argument is valid. I'm not saying that it is the be-all and end-all verse on pants on women, but it does tie in with New Testament principle and therefore is not putting someone under the law. If we took the stance that we aren't to consider OT law in anything because it then puts us under the law, we could justifiably throw away a good chunk of our Bibles.

That said, the biggest issue regarding pants is what the husband says about it (as has been noted). My husband would never allow me to wear pants because he is convinced God would be displeased (I have no desire to, so it's not an issue with us, either). However, he would not look down on another man as being less spiritual because he allows his wife to wear pants.

I find it amusing that women fought to wear pants because they wanted to be free of the stricture of wearing dresses...and now men are pushing for the acceptance of wearing skirts/dresses because they want the freedom that wearing skirts/dresses brings. Hmmmm....

Deut. 22:5 deals with the idea of exchanging gender clothing as the pagans went into worship their false gods. God didn't want Israel to follow that custom...and so here we are today, saying that Deut. 22:5 can't apply because it's law (even though scriptural principle of Christian identity & gender distinction - hair, anyone? - is a NT principle). And yet, garments are becoming gender neutral. Somehow, no matter what we say for or against pants on women, I don't think God is too happy with the gender blending...

Edited to add...Melodys, in other threads where we've discussed pants, I've recommended a book that is actually very good on the topic of many standards. It's called The Fall and Rise of Christians Standards by David Kidd. He is a pastor, although I don't know that he's IFB. He presents a very graciously written book that has biblical and logical support throughout. I would highly recommend it to anyone, regardless of their beliefs on various standards.

Now you just gotta talk my hubby into it. ;-) No really, I was raised that way, and then got changed at Fairhaven (which FYI is probably stricter than any other college with dress) and over the years of looking into the topic and talking about it with others, have come to the conclusion I was raised the right way.

Of course, to do as my hub says is safe...its not WRONG to wear skirts and dresses. So, its not like I'm living wrong. It would be nice to be able to wear loose pants to work in, but one of those things. My friend who wears pants points out that she's seen a lot more of my legs than I've seen of hers LOL but then my husband countered back (for my ears only) that he's seen a lot more of her butt (not purposely) than her husband's seen of mine. haha.

Modesty is always right, I guess....

I think of all psychologists as ungoldy, how can one possibly be a psychologist and be a Bible-practicing Christian? When I think of Psychology I think of blaming your problems on your situation. There are NO excuses for sin! I do believe there are Christian counselors, however. What are your views? Has anyone had a positive experience with a Christian psychologist?
