If you do not know who the Getty's are, please look them up before posting.
Have you noticed that the new Majesty hymnal contains music from the Gettys/Sovereign Grace? What is your opinion on that? I find it an outrage that they are digging through garbage to find good music. I think it is sad I can't just buy a CD from a trusted source without knowing if there is CCM behind the music. Why aren't pastors stepping up and writing the Hamiltons? Why aren't we fighting for our music? Why have we stopped caring about associations? Don't people understand as soon as a weaker Christian hears you listening to something like "Amazing Grace My Chains are Gone" they will automatically assume you would listen to Chris Tomlin? We will loose my generation if we do not stand true.

Melodys got a reaction from KiwiChristian in Which Bible Version Can You Recommend?
The problem is not so much with the versions, but the text from which the versions came. The KJV came from a text we call the TR, which has been available to the church for ages. The NIV and all almost all other modern versions came from the Critical text. The manuscripts to the CT were found in a monastery and the Vatican after being lost for many years. The reason people believe that the CT is more reliable is because they are older. Yes, they are older. Why? Because the church didn't think them trustworthy so they haven't been used! The old old manuscripts of the TR are lost yes, because when paper gets used, it deteriorates. Not only that, but as the copies were being made, the old ones were burned, which is why we don't have any really old TR manuscripts. I am saying all of this to say that the early church used the TR (where the KJV came from) and copied it for centuries, while they didn't trust the CT (where the NIV etc comes from). I trust the KJV because I know it doesn't have some denominational agenda and because the Lord promised His word would be available to ALL generations. How can it be available if we just found it in a monastery?

Please excuse my wordiness. I get defensive about my Bible ;)

Melodys got a reaction from swathdiver in Mental Disorders
I saw a post that went side tracked into a long discussion about mental disorders, so I thought I would start one here so we can collaborate resources/ (christian) scientific studies. I do not believe in a disorder named ADD. Why? I believe our diets are a problem, lack of physical exercise, improper discipline from parents, etc. Another one to discuss: depression. According to psychologists, we cannot "help it" if we feel sad because of a chemical imbalance. Has anyone ever heard of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? Basically it is a big term that means changing your thoughts to change your behavior. This is the world's tactic, but it is God's way (although we do it through God's strength). The world (even though I don't trust any of the "facts" they throw around) says that this method works to change chemical levels in your brain. Duh it works! Yet people are still sitting around depressed and drugged because "doctors" have told them they cannot "help it." Sure, you can have drugs to feel a little better, but that doesn't fix the root of the issue: you choose to sin when you think negatively! You need to forgive people who have hurt you and trust God to be in control of your future.
Anyone have anything to add? This is a big subject that needs to be dealt with in our churches! We deal with it in RU all the time.

SN: please if you are going to get emotional and rude, pray before you respond. I know it will touch a lot of nerves for people who have family/ friends who are diagnosed as having a mental disorder. Before you judge, understand I lost my Dad and almost lost both of my sisters because doctors said they have depression.

    Good post Oldtimer.

Some people claim they cannot control their temper, is that their excuse for not practicing self discipline? Could it be possible their parents never taught them the importance of controlling their temper?

Sure, some children are more active than other children, but a person has to learn control, if they do not they only become a lose cannon.

I have trouble concentration very long at a time, but its because of pain in my neck & head. It keeps me from setting very long at a time, so I get up move around, come back, start were I left off. Maybe I could use it as an excuse never to study, or to say, the KJ is to hard for me to understand getting one of those updated version that teaches a different teaching.

Besides, a child of God, calling on the Lord, can have the strength of mind to do what needs to be done.

Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

So really, do we have an excuse?

That's a good point to consider. These ADD sort of things were once unheard of, even when they first came up with their new theory few bought into it. It really wasn't until public school teachers (and their union) discovered if they doped the boys up on the drugs prescribed for these things it made the boys more docile and like most of the girls, and that's when so many boys were suddenly said to have ADD.

What a shame so many parents allow public school teachers to tell them their child has ADD and then they go to a doctor telling them this and the doctor follows the plan, saying the child is ADD and telling the parents to dope him up.

The fact is, it's common for boys to have shorter attention spans, to be more energetic, to be active. Rather than dealing with these facts as past teachers did, through discipline and training, todays teachers consider that to be too much work so they just want them doped up and many parents go right along with this.

No matter a persons personality, they can find a way to read and study that works for them. Then, through personal discipline and practice, they can master this and progress in what they are doing.

I actually see this as a benefit. It makes you slow down and research what you are reading. It also makes you pray for proper understanding. This is what happened to me when I first started to only read the KJV for my studies. After a while though it will come easy so make sure you don't get back into the habit of not chewing the words of God slowly.

Melodys reacted to brosmith in Bluegrass anyone?
I never said all bluegrass musicians are lost. I personally think bluegrass music is just one step removed from country music and at times it is country music. Country music is music for the unsaved crowd not for God's people. Admitting that they may not be saved should be enough to tell you to stay away from their music. By the way, I referred to gospel music because that is what they think they are playing and singing. At best, it is a false gospel. At worst, it is worldly, secular music sprinkled with a few nice sounding religious words in order to deceive those who have no discernment.

The country sound masquerading as gospel music. I dare anyone to find a testimony of real salvation on their website (other than someone saying that they were saved at a concert)! If this is what bluegrass music is all about then I don't want any part of it. They ain't Christians and their music ain't gospel!

Melodys reacted to Salyan in Inter-racial marriage
Christ had to be born of the line of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. That line would not be disrupted by adding in some people from 'outside' families. The Israelites themselves were descended from the four wives/concubines of Jacob - and I'm sure those concubines weren't related to Abraham.

The people surrounding the Hebrews were idolatrous, immoral, wicked nations. God instructed His people not to marry them because "they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly." (Ex. 34:12-16; Deut. 7:1-4) We see that whenever the Israelites disobeyed God's command to keep themselves separate, idolatry did spread through the nation. This invariably brought God's punishment on them.

While the bloodline of Christ was important, Scripture seems to indicate that the primary reason the Israelites were not to intermarry was to preserve them spiritually. We see the example to believers to be separate in our close relationships lest we be drawn into the world.

Melodys got a reaction from Dr. White in Tracts
After working in fast food for my first college year, I am disturbed at some Christians. This maybe for edification, or a slight rant about my upset.
First of all, I am tired of "Christians" who behave horribly, have no control over their children and leave huge messes for me to clean up... and then leave a tract on their dirty table... and on the floor. My unsaved co-workers just comment on the lack of backbone the Christians had for not actually handing it to ANY of the workers, but littering the room with them. The only person that actually encouraged me was someone who just asked me if I was saved (I'm sure he just asked because I was wearing a skirt...). I think we as Christians are too afraid and unsaved people see it.
Secondly, I am disappointed in the lack of tracts I recieved! I was in a community with MANY good IFB churches and I was never handed a single tract. I knew some of the people that ordered food were from good churches! We only have one life time to touch these people's lives! I'm so glad I'm saved, because if I was not, I know none of the Christians that came through my restaurant cared enough about my soul.

Pilgrimspen I would stay with the KJB, or the Bible in togalag, if it is translated from the KJB. It may be hard to read, but in time, you will have a better understanding of God and His will for you. The trouble with other translation is that when you change a word, you change the meaning, be it ever so slightly, it is still important. The New World Translation for instance translates John 1:1 as saying
"In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was A God" One small change from the Word was God to the Word was "A" God, makes a big difference. All the other translations have changed some key verses that effect the deity of Christ or the virgin birth, which also reflects on the deity of Christ. Please take the wise route and stay with the KJV, the more you read it the more you will begin to understand the "old English" (Thee and thou are not that hard to understand!)

    John,
you have raised a good point about the consistency in our critique of music. I understand exactly what you are saying, that there seems to be a double standard in how we use an argument against a modern song that, if applied evenly, would disqualify what is now a standard hymn.
Here is my take on that issue:
It takes a long time to see the fruit born of a seed. We can very easily look back through the corridors of time and see what songs have been a tremedous blessing and help to God's people, despite the author's weaknesses/faults, etc.
For instance, we can easily point out that Fanny Crosby wrote secular tunes, and dismiss all of her hymnody.
However, here is where the fruit is borne out.
She wrote literally 1,000's of hymns, yet how many of them do we actually have in our hymnbooks today, and out of that small selection, how many do we actually sing on any kind of a regular basis?
Maybe 15? 20? I would say 20 would be the very, very most.
So the overall ratio of Fanny Crosby's songs that we actually sing vs. the overall number of songs she wrote is a very, very small percentage.

So let me make the appropriate application.
Bill and Gloria Gaither have written (x) number of songs (I have no idea how many they have written - I just know they have written a large number of songs.) Out of all the songs they have written, I can only think of a very small handful of songs that are anywhere near appropriate for church specials (at least IMO - and I know some probably would not sing ANYTHING by the Gaithers....more power to you! REMEMBER...this is just an illustration!)

My point is this....there could very well indeed be some modern songs written by CCM artists that actually have good words. The music could even be cleaned up to be suitable for a conservatively minded Baptist Church.
The problem is ASSOCIATION. By singing those songs in our churches, we are by default ENDORSING the current "ministry" of people that we would otherwise condemn on many fronts - doctrine, practice, separation, methods, etc., etc., etc. While many people might be blessed by the song because they have no idea who wrote it, or even who the authors are, let's not kid ourselves into thinking that there would not be a sizable percentage of people in the church who DO know the songs from the CCM artists. THose are the people that will see the inconsistency in our stated/preached position on music, and the use of the very same music that we condemn from the pulpits.

If in fact these modern songs are any good, they will stand the test of time, just like that very small percentage of Fanny Crosby's songs did and Bill Gaither's songs have.

Down here in the South, Southern Gospel music is such a problem that I avoid Gaither's songs because I don't want anyone to think that I condone his music or lifestyle or "ministry" or anything like that.

"Abstain from all APPEARANCE of evil."

Anyway, maybe that helps someone out there understand why some of us have such a problem with the Hamiltons including modern CCM songs in their songbooks.
I mean, that video someone posted - the performers do everything that Garlock and Hamilton told us NOT to do....so why would they use their music??? (FWIW - I really could not tell the difference MUSICALLY from there performance and a typical rock band performance....same lighting, same makeup, same musical structure, same chord progression, same repetitive riffs, etc.....)

The bottom line is this.....we are in Laodicean times....God's people are more interested in pleasing their FLESH than pleasing God....and will use any excuse to do so!

PS - Ian, I disagree with you...the words and music of Onward Christian Soldiers is vastly superior to the posted video. At least the music makes you think of marching!

    In Christ,

But as David Cloud says in one of his articles, singing their hymns is not going to lead you to becaome an infant baptist, but with the songs of charismatics like Townend and Kendrick, by singing their songs, we open the door to our young people bying their CDs, and then becoming attracted to that kind of worship. I say to our church that we would not have these people preach in our church, but by singing their songs we are letting them in by the back door, however sound that particualr song seems.

Melodys reacted to brosmith in Majesty Music And Getty
Your point is contrary to sound doctrine. The Getty's are providing and promoting contemporary Christian music dressed up as "modern hymns". They are entertainers providing so-called "spiritual" entertainment but nothing spiritual (from a Biblical perspective) will ever come from such a polluted fountain. And by the way, just because a song "sounds good" when played on the piano or organ does not necessarily mean that the song is good. Many rock songs "sound good" when listened to by the carnal person.

Matthew 7:18 - "A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit."

Matthew 12:33 - "Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit."

I can only conclude from the above statements that:

#1 - You are trying to rationalize and justify the usage of CCM as being acceptable.

#2 - You are ignoring (or refusing to accept) the obvious teachings of the scriptures.

The Bible teaches us that truly spiritual people cannot bring forth carnality.

The usage of rock music proves that the Getty's are operating on a carnal basis and therefore anything that they produce is corrupted by their carnality. It does not matter if the words of their songs are "scriptural" or even scripture quotations. This is why the so-called "modern hymn movement" is so wrong. It is leading undiscerning people to swallow the devil's lies.

You can call it "Pharisaical taste" if you like, but you are feasting on carnality which leads to destruction.

From the 'for what it's worth department', I grew up in a broken home, as some call it. My Dad got remarried, divorced, remarried, divorced. There were, besides my step mothers, various women spending the night. Drinking to excess was normal. You get the picture.
