  1. I find it quite amusing that nearly every time a thread gets going, it strays so far off track.  I started this post in hopes that someone might build their confidence in soul winning, and it went to repentance, and then bickering.  Why don't we put the boxing gloves away and get with the program!

    I almost regret posting it.

  2.  "And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul." (1 Samuel 28:12)

Does any one believe that a medium could have called Samuel back from the dead?

It appears that the "witch of Endor" did.

What doe you make of it?

  3. I acknowledged that in my post but was also pointing out the distinction that the goal is to provide an end to the threatening actions, not necessarily the end of the threatening person. Plus the fact that due to rapid response of EMS teams and advances of medical abilities in major trauma cases that MANY shot in vital areas with a handgun DO survive.

If I remember correctly you were assigned to PBRs, therefore you know that many of our boys survived "lethal" wounds from rifle, mortar and RPG.

I was trained on PBR's and that's why I ask the question "could you really kill someone?"  I know that every gun toter is not a killer, but in this forum it seems that many are; they gloat on "what will happen if someone breaks into MY house"--that they will not leave alive.  A human life (and I said this the last time this came up),is worth more than a bunch of "stuff" that we bought from the store!

In basic training we had "quick kill" exercises, and I did well in them, but they were just silhouettes of men, not the "real McCoy".  In combat, we had to kill or be killed, but that is not always the case in a break-in robbery.  If you shoot to kill, you may have to suffer the consequences, here and hereafter.

Yes, our boys suffered many afflictions, but death has no cure, while wounds can heal.  There were a lot of deaths on both sides of the "fence".  Remember one thing though, many of those that were killed died because they did not know what to do and when to do it, they goofed off in the training classes and "dry runs",  Some were shot down (like a good friend and neighbor of mine) and didn't have much to say about it, nowhere to run.  The point is, as one man pointed out, no one dies without the Lords "permission", and when we determine when another should die, we may be robbing the Lord of a soul that has not yet gotten saved.  Think about it.

  4. HappyChristian, I really don't care what you do, it's not really my business.  I just express what I see as truth, and can't believe that others cannot grasp it.  I'll go on thinking my way, and you go on thinking your way, and we can both live "happily ever after"

I know I have proved Him many times, and found Him faithful to deliver me from some dangerous situations, and He will again.

  5. Swath, I understand where you are coming from, I might do the same thing under the circumstances, but that doesn't make it right.  Wretched's last post should cause us all to think when a man (or woman) stands before the Great White Throne, and judged there, will I be the one that put him/her there?  I know, their sin put them there, but If I killed them, do I stand to be reproached for it?  I think so.

It's easy for the proponents of this thought to pull scriptures out of the air, and give gory, and fantastic details of crimes committed, but what is the chances that any of them would happen to any of us?  I figure that if anything happens to me, the Lord allowed it, and if He allows it, somehow I'll take it..  That is the attitude that got me through many "sticky" situations, one of which I told about in another thread (or maybe it was earlier in this one.

By the Way, "rightly dividing" still leaves much to the person to decide what is rightly divided, and what is not.  I know that's a term you like to use.

  6. Why do you (generic) lock your doors?  If you don't, great. If you do, you're not trusting God, you're trusting the lock.

I figured that someone would come up with this question, and figured it might be you.  Locking the door is a deterrent, BUT THE PROWLER IS STILL LIVING WHEN HE LEAVES!

A motion detection light often works too.  The worst case scenario is not the norm, but the eager to kill "defender" will take it to the limit.

Why don't all these gun toters start killing Muslims, after all, they are no worse than Canaanites worshiping a false god and all.

How about blowing up a mosque?  that should stop the trouble before it starts.

By the way, I own 3 handguns and two rifles and a shotgun, but I do not wish to carry for protection; if I can't protect my family without a gun, I ain't much of a man!

  7. I do not believe defending oneself or those unable to defend themselves with deadly force if necessary is evil according to the Scriptures.  It's simply self-defense.  If that were true, it would then seem that Romans 12:17 and 12:18 contradict one another and we all know that is not possible.

Neither is it vengeance or revenge as it applies to the previous "what if" scenarios.

There are many scenarios that we imagine, and a lot of "ifs", but while quoting scripture, lets not forget our Lords words when he told Peter to put away his sword, after cutting off malchus' ear, Mat 26:52  "Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword."

No one has mentioned that one have they?

You can "if" all you want, but "If" you trust the Lord, you would never have those tragic things happen to ypu, don't you think He can deter the criminal and send him on his way?

Is Psa. 91 true today, or written just for our amusement?

And HC, I am surprised that you would be so adamant about taking anther's life.  Face it, anger is what makes us retaliate, and not justice.  I saw the old shows where pacifists were persecuted, and a hero with a gun saves them, but they would not defend themselves, and I shuttered to think of it, but, who am I (or you, or anyone) to decide that its time to end the life of a wicked man when he might get saved someday in the future?  We have the power over life and death, and that is more or less at our discretion, as if we were the Maker of man, and the life he has is ours.  Be a crusader if you wish, but don't go telling others its all right because YOU think it is.

  8. I spoke up against it on this forum, and was verbally "beaten" nearly to death when it first came out.  AWANA was big too, but they have fallen by the wayside.  All this "recovery" stuff is no different than the change that comes from accepting Christ and learning the Word of God.

Mel Trotter was a drunk to the utmost, (sold his dead babies shoes for another drink!) and he stumbled (drunk) into the Pacific Gardens Mission in Chicago, and was gloriously saved--even without a man made "recovery" program.  He went on to found missions in Grand Rapids Mi, and several all over the country, and became a dynamic evangelist.  Somehow all this happened without RU (if you can believe it!)

  9. Too many times we attempt to predict how things we say will be taken.  This thinking can hinder soul winning, and leaves out the power of the Holy Ghost working through His Word.

I guess there are a lot of differences of opinion on this matter, One thing is for sure, they need to hear the Gospel whether they accept the Bible as true or not.  My sister was one of those who always questioned, and I witnessed to her any way, right after she attempted suicide.

  10. What would Jesus do?  if the Holy Spirit can use something we say, or give us some sort of influence with them, He can convert them.  I can't believe the people that just give up because "there is no hope" of reaching them.  At one time, there was no hope for me either.

Not many will readily admit that you influenced them for good, but they do have something to think about upon their beds, when alone and all is quiet.  It's like giving out tracts, they may act as if they are offended (and some will be, of course), but many have read the tract later, and given their life to the Lord.  I, for one, will argue or debate, whatever you call it, for the glory of God.  If he has given me a bit of insight, it would be wrong for me to ignore it.

  11. I disagree with many of these.  Like Swath said, someone may be following the debate, hanging in the balance, and truth needs to be known.  We ought always to stand for Truth, although others believe they are also standing for Truth, and it seems endless, at least when we stand before God we won't have that to answer to.

1Pe 3:15  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
1Pe 3:16  Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

Always be ready/willing to stand for what's right.

  12. The longest I have fasted was three days, but I did not do it for the right reasons then.  I believe there is an element of sorrow in fasting; the Biblical accounts (Pharisee's excepted) almost always express a great need and a great sorrow.  Esther is a good example.

    Isaiah makes it practical:

Isa 58:6  Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Isa 58:7  Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

A word search on fasting can be enlightening.

  13. When Jesus spoke with Nicodemus about being born again, that incorporates repentance. One must forsake the old life and take on the new life. One can't take on the new life while clinging to the old life.

The jailer exhibited repentance by his actions.

The word "Gospel" simply means "good news", and all that Jesus did is good news indeed. What examples are given of calling men to God? They involve repentance, as I cited a few of the verses in another post.

The Holy Ghost can't seal and indwell someone that is still in their sin. One must recognize the fact they are a sinner, condemned already in the eyes of God for their rebellion against Him. One must then choose to repent and be born again or remain in their sin and continue in their sin nature.

It's the idea that one can be saved without repentance, that one can be a new creature while still being the old creature, that all one has to do is say a "sinners prayer" or say "I believe" without any conviction, that has led to a plethora of false converts all around us.

This is why when we read the sermons of old time Baptists they are filled with "fire and brimstone", and this is why the world and liberal churches all denounce such preaching today. This is especially a problem here in America where most want to have things their way. They want to feel they are good with God, but they don't want to do what God says so they are quick to latch onto a way to think they are good with God, whether it be "salvation" through nothing more than saying a prayer or it be through saying hail marys and confessing to a priest or finding some religion that fits their life already.

Jesus and the Apostles called men to repentance and a new life in Christ. Old time Baptists preached the same message, as do some still today.

Salvation through nothing more than saying a prayer?  Why would they pray if they did not want eternal life?  Praying is not a natural thing, not real prayer.  There would likely be some supernatural work in it if a man or women will be willing to accept Christ.  This idea of (easy prayerism" or whatever you call it has corrupted the furtherance of the Gospel in a big way, even on a fundamental board as online baptist.  That's really what it's about, isn't it?  How can we read the mind of the person praying?  How do we know if he/she is sincere or not?  Because we don't know, we have to invent terms and attack doctrines that have been effective for many years.  How much did you know about repentance when YOU were saved?  I only know that I did not want to spend eternity burning in hell; after that, I learned important doctrines.

  14. The Bible says that baptism is walking in a new life too, does that mean we need to preach baptism while soul winning?

Col 2:12  "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead."

Rom 6:4  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
