    Yeah, and even when it comes to closet calvinists on here, Salyan's the only one I can think of--oh no!!

    Also, in case it helps you manage your expectations, I don't think any of the regular forum contributors hold a favourable view towards reformed doctrines.

    Alimantado got a reaction from HappyChristian in Civil War or War between States - please advise.
    One 'civil war' that doesn't often get talked about in UK is the so-called prayer book rebellion in Cornwall in 1549. Although it wasn't the only Cornish revolt, apparently Cornwall's defeat was the beginning of the end of Cornwall as a nation with its own language. Except there's now an independence movement--hooray!

    In UK it's a mess:
    Distances and other measurements on road signs = imperial
    Stopping distances on road signs = metric
    Nautical stuff = imperial
    Land area = imperial (acres)
    Engine capacity and fuel = metric
    Body weight and clothing measurements = imperial, in particular 'stones' for body weight (14lb in a stone--for some reason US stopped using this one)
    Packaged food and drink = metric
    Non-packaged food and drink = imperial
    Cooking = both
    Temperature = metric
    Pressure = imperial
    General engineering distances/weights/volume = metric
    And for most of the above you will get people switching, although there's some things it's actually illegal to do, such as print road signs in metric, and print food prices in imperial.
    Also don't forget that dry and liquid 'imperial' measures differ between UK and US, e.g. ton and gallon.
    Like elsewhere it seems, most instruments for domestic use in UK have both imperial and metric, e.g. rulers have metric down one side and inches down the other.
    Back to the OP, here's some precision measurement tools that bird ringers in UK use in the field:

    You know, my observation of Calvinism is that a) it isn't learned from the Bible - it comes from the teaching of men - many books and 'much learning' - and b) it presents itself as an intellectual doctrine and attracts those who are drawn to intellectualism. It often seems to become a point of pride - "see how much more study/learning I have done" or "see how much more I've thought about it than all you peons". Your statement above about 'shallow thinkers' really does reflect this observation, as it displays this as a point of pride in your life (you obviously think that you are a much deeper thinker than anyone who rejects MacArthur or Calvinism).

    Oh, and I am going to answer a question posed above. You asked if I considered Spurgeon to preach a damnable heresy, and said that if I said yes, I'd condemn one of the greatest preachers of the Western world (thus attempting to negate my statement by the supposed position of the man). I haven't studied Spurgeon much, so I really can't speak to what he did or did not preach. However, if he did teach the 'doctrines of grace' (irresistible grace, total depravity, unconditional election, etc.), than yes, he did preach damnable heresy. And you know what? If he preached such heresy, then perhaps he was not one of the 'greatest preachers of the Western world'. Because the popularity of a man does not define the truth of his teaching.
    But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Gal. 1:8
    My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. James 2:1
    For their is no respect of persons with God. Romans 2:11

    Since you've had a bit of stick for this, I just want to say, for what it's worth, that when I encounter someone using the word "most" like you did, then unless they've qualified the word elsewhere in the sentence or there's an immediate context, I just assume it's shorthand for "most in my experience" or "most to my knowledge". I've always done that without a second thought to be honest--seems common sense to me.
    For example, if I pulled on a roll of sellotape and it tore too early, and a friend standing next to me said "how annoying, most of them do that", I wouldn't suppose that my friend had evidence of the outcome of every sellotape-pulling in world history and was relaying to me the results.

    Ask yourself this: if you don't speak to your family, how in the world will you be able to witness to them? And if you cut them out of your life because they won't bend to your will, how in the world does that speak of the love of the Father for them? You represent God to them right now, and what you do and say will be how they think of Him.
    You are in a difficult situation because of needing to live with them for this time and because they do not share your faith. However, you brought up a good point: you are to honor your parents.
    Honoring does not mean obeying, because once a child is grown they are released from obedience, but never from honor. How can you honor your parents? By being respectful to them - in your words and in your actions. You honor them by being the very best man you can be - because that is what they raised you to be.
    You do not have to abandon your parents (or even your dog) in order to follow Christ. In fact, if you abandon either your parents or your dog, you are abdicating responsibility - something which is not biblical.
    Continue honoring your parents and taking care of your responsibilities (like the dog) and obeying scripture. Speak of Christ to your parents whenever possible. Speak of other things, too, things in which they are interested.
    Let them know you love them by your deeds as well as your words. Pray for them constantly and let them know you are praying.
    I agree with John that it would be best for you to find your own place when you are able. In this economy, it is harder and harder to do so, but ask the Lord to lead you in that way and He will.

    That's unfortunate, then, because the action was deceptive (circumventing a ban by creating a new account) even though the motive wasn't. I would have asked the forum admin what I could do to have the ban overturned, and then I would have respected the outcome of that discussion.

    Ian Day has been banned. Going around a ban by starting a new account with a new name is unethical at best.
    I apologize for it taking a few days, but I needed to make sure that no moderators had given permission to return. For all members, please know that had permission been given, the  old account would have been reopened. It was not. It will not be.
