Orval got a reaction from ... in communication in a post modern world
I was just making a post in another area when this thought hit me, that I feel enslaved by technology.  I want to disconnect everything but find I cannot for fear of being isolated.  does this make sense?  People come to our home when we invite them for dinner or lunch and yet it does not seem that anyone just stops by anymore for the sake of friendship.  When we do get together with family and friends no one actually has discussions, references are to funny utube videos, or a movie, or some recent sporting game mostly they just sit around looking at their phone, texting one another while the person they are texting is in the room.

In the last two years I have not had more that 3 or 4 meaningful conversations with anyone under 30 years of age unless I am teaching and a question comes up.  How is that we can be so "connected" and yet so isolated?  I go to church and (I love our church and pastor and our church family) it seems when the last amen is said everyone over 40 disappears we have a large congregation for a city of twenty thousand.  I get the feeling something is wrong but I can't put my finger on it.  We grow by 20 people per year, we have soul winning and special days, we are often told we are one of the friendliest churches in our area.  Our pastor is a tremendous preacher and teacher and yet with all these positives.  I do not sense the same corporate power of God today I sensed 40 years ago.

I believe that technology is always calling for our attention right now and consequently we never have the time to get alone with God for a couple of hours, to dwell on what God wants to speak to us about one on one, to read the scriptures for an hour instead of reading a couple of verses and a 300 word devotion so we can get back to our friends who never come by to spend an afternoon or evening talking about the Lord.

I saw a picture on Facebook a few days ago that kind of summed up todays understanding of God and salvation.  The caption stated "yep I am on my way to heaven, I clicked "like" on a picture and typed Amen!"  I am not sure if people under 40 truly understand what "true fellowship" is?  I am not complaining per se just wondering how old I really am.  I realize I cannot go back 40 years but should I have to go back if we are a New Testament church?
Acts 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Interesting post.  I recently filled in as an interim pastor for a church about an hour from me.  Three times I approached their pulpit committee concerning setting a time for door knocking and three times I was given excuses why door knocking did not work.  I spent my last three months with these good folks trying to show them that what they had been taught was not biblical.  Sunday nights I taught on Baptist distinctives and on Sunday morning I preached on the need to be a testimony in our every day lives and to be open about our faith.  I believe their new pastor is continuing to challenge them to change as well.  The fact is we do need to set a time to witness and we need to set a place but we must also understand that for some they will not care how much we know till the know how much we care therefore life style evangelism can have its place in the process but God has still ordained speaking (preaching) the word of God to win the lost.

You might consider looking at prayer from another angle.  Does your praying cause others to be uncomfortable?  Often new believers will be challenged to pray by the actions of others and you know children they are uninhibited, daddy why don’t we pray?  Not being comfortable is good because it keeps us in remembrance that we are not of the world but we are in it.

Right off hand, the only Commentary on Luke that I can recommend is, "The Son of Man,"  A Commentary on the Gospel of Luke, by John R. Rice. Most used Christian bookstores would probably have some copies available. If not, here is the website for the Sword of the Lord Bookstore: http://www.swordbooks.com/sonofman.aspx
As you have already studied William Barclay's commentary I feel that you are ahead of some of us already. So, we look forward to your comments.

    Good morning to all,

This fall I will begin a new journey with my SS class through the book of Luke.  In preparation of these messages I would like two or three good commentaries on the book of Luke.  Currently I am just finishing William Barclay’s commentary and have found his rich understanding of Jewish history amazing.

I have always liked JFB, but would like to expand my authors on this project.  I am contemplating G. Campbell Morgan so if you have a comment on him I would like to read it.

I look forward to reading your responses.

Egg plant tastes wonderful.  cut about 1/4 inch thick roll in egg, then roll in flour fry in olive oil till lightly browned on both sides.  I like to add spices to my flour, but these are great for a side with almost any summer meal.  If you are not a fryer, use the same process and lay on a cookie sheet in the oven at 350 for 25 minutes.

We're all Independent Churches and Christians. Start using the UCB to describe yourself and encourage your church to uses it. Jul.  O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father, and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.         40   Rom.  [Aside.]  Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?   Jul.  ’Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself though, not a Montague. What’s Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part         45 Belonging to a man. O! be some other name: What’s in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet; So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d, Retain that dear perfection which he owes         50 Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name; And for that name, which is no part of thee, Take all myself.   Rom.        I take thee at thy word. Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptiz’d;         55 Henceforth I never will be Romeo.   Jul.  What man art thou, that, thus be-screen’d in night, So stumblest on my counsel?   Rom.        By a name I know not how to tell thee who I am:         60 My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself, Because it is an enemy to thee: Had I it written, I would tear the word.   Jul.  My ears have not yet drunk a hundred words Of that tongue’s uttering, yet I know the sound:         65 Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague?   Rom.  Neither, fair maid, if either thee dislike.   Jul.  How cam’st thou hither, tell me, and wherefore?

A sign of the times as they say. As Daniel 12:4 says...people are definitely running to and fro, and knowledge has definitely increased.
As much as I enjoy Linux operating systems...from configuration to creating themes to building my own systems...I often find myself sick of it too and have to step away.
I remember as a teenager, I could drive over to the next town, and I might meet another car on the way. Now...even in this rural area, it's a seemingly constant flow of cars. People are always on the move and have no time for anything truly meaningful. Though technology has opened the world to people, people have withdrawn into their own little technology cocoons...they are now living for technology instead of living life.

I don't think it is MS store only, but there are restrictions on what can be run - Internet browsers for instance.
I read that you cannot (or at least it is really difficult) to make anything other than MS Edge your default browser.
They are certainly making it as hard as possible for people to use non MS approved stuff. But I think it is mostly browser and OS admin type stuff.
But W10s is not the "new" version for everything. As I understand it, it is the "cut down" Windows for use of tabs, phones, and low storage/low RAM machines.
Full Win10 stays basically the same as it is now. Not to say the next update or version won't go the same way in the future.

But in the end it is still more "open" than MAC, although they are trying to head that way.

    Other operating systems?
Linux - talk to No Nics - he is our resident "expert", but keep in mind that Linux takes a bit of work to get going.
Nothing else really for the average guy - got to be a serious geek to even find info on other stuff, let alone get it running.

1000fps is plenty velocity. I've killed big, fat rabbits with one shooting at 880. Sight in the scope, always shoot off of a steady rest, be patient and pick your shots. And happy hunting!

Head or chest, yes. Any other place you will be going through allot of pellets. Catch them on the ground if possible or they will dig into the tree bark and you will waste allot more pellets trying to knock them out of the trees and the meat will be ruined.

Squirrels are killing my flowers this year and really frustrating me.  I have had a few problems over the years but with my neighbor passing away a couple of years ago (he would trap them) the squirrels are breeding to fast and are really digging up my flowers this year.  I borrowed a Ruger Blackhawk Elite .177 Pellet Air Rifle with Scope and have not zeroed it in.  I am wondering if it is powerful enough to kill a squirrel.  I am on the very edge of town and cannot use my 22 rifle but the squirrels need to move or end up in my frying pan.
the fps is around 1000 - 1200 which should be enough to kill at 25 yrds.  your thoughts?

Orval reacted to weary warrior in How to address a guest pastor in error?
I agree fully with Alan and DaveW. The pastor is the place to go for this. Having said that, however, I will add this. Whenever error is spoken from the pulpit, whither it be a guest speaker or our own pastor, we have a teaching session at home. I set the family down in the living room after the service, get out our Bibles, and study out what was wrong. Even if the subject was correct, but scripture was incorrectly pulled from context and improperly twisted to back up correct doctrine, we point it out and address this at home. I do not allow scripture to be used dishonestly to preach honest truth. The well being of the church falls on the pastor's shoulders, but the well being of my family falls on my shoulders, not that of my pastor. I do not shirk that responsibility.
