  1. Good morning to all,

This fall I will begin a new journey with my SS class through the book of Luke.  In preparation of these messages I would like two or three good commentaries on the book of Luke.  Currently I am just finishing William Barclay’s commentary and have found his rich understanding of Jewish history amazing.

I have always liked JFB, but would like to expand my authors on this project.  I am contemplating G. Campbell Morgan so if you have a comment on him I would like to read it.

I look forward to reading your responses.

    Hello!
Is there a link somewhere I can find support about Constantine and RCC?
How reliable are scholars who wrote history?

I am not trying to defend the RCC. I just want to be able to defend this one properly.
    Thank you!

Sorry, I have not gotten back to you sooner but I have been very busy.  I would suggest you read the first 5 or 6 chapters of Thomas Armitage's History of the Baptists for a clear understanding and wonderful word picture of the process.  Research to understand how the Monarchial Bishops slowly rose to respect and power and how that meshed with the persecution by the Roman Empire of the early churches.  I am really cramped for time so I just cannot do the research again right now.  but would be happy to help later in the year when not strapped for time.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Egg plant tastes wonderful.  cut about 1/4 inch thick roll in egg, then roll in flour fry in olive oil till lightly browned on both sides.  I like to add spices to my flour, but these are great for a side with almost any summer meal.  If you are not a fryer, use the same process and lay on a cookie sheet in the oven at 350 for 25 minutes.

  4. Here is a recipe I tried recently and really like.  It is spicy hot so beware.  take one to several Jalapenos and slice very thin across the circumference (I leave the seeds in them), add a little olive oil to a skillet and turn on medium heat, place the Jalapenos in the skillet and fry them adding Montreal Steak spice.  Fry till light brown and eat with your favorite foods.  the taste is addictive (at least to me).

  5. I was just making a post in another area when this thought hit me, that I feel enslaved by technology.  I want to disconnect everything but find I cannot for fear of being isolated.  does this make sense?  People come to our home when we invite them for dinner or lunch and yet it does not seem that anyone just stops by anymore for the sake of friendship.  When we do get together with family and friends no one actually has discussions, references are to funny utube videos, or a movie, or some recent sporting game mostly they just sit around looking at their phone, texting one another while the person they are texting is in the room.

In the last two years I have not had more that 3 or 4 meaningful conversations with anyone under 30 years of age unless I am teaching and a question comes up.  How is that we can be so "connected" and yet so isolated?  I go to church and (I love our church and pastor and our church family) it seems when the last amen is said everyone over 40 disappears we have a large congregation for a city of twenty thousand.  I get the feeling something is wrong but I can't put my finger on it.  We grow by 20 people per year, we have soul winning and special days, we are often told we are one of the friendliest churches in our area.  Our pastor is a tremendous preacher and teacher and yet with all these positives.  I do not sense the same corporate power of God today I sensed 40 years ago.

I believe that technology is always calling for our attention right now and consequently we never have the time to get alone with God for a couple of hours, to dwell on what God wants to speak to us about one on one, to read the scriptures for an hour instead of reading a couple of verses and a 300 word devotion so we can get back to our friends who never come by to spend an afternoon or evening talking about the Lord.

I saw a picture on Facebook a few days ago that kind of summed up todays understanding of God and salvation.  The caption stated "yep I am on my way to heaven, I clicked "like" on a picture and typed Amen!"  I am not sure if people under 40 truly understand what "true fellowship" is?  I am not complaining per se just wondering how old I really am.  I realize I cannot go back 40 years but should I have to go back if we are a New Testament church?

Acts 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

I read that you cannot (or at least it is really difficult) to make anything other than MS Edge your default browser.

They are certainly making it as hard as possible for people to use non MS approved stuff. But I think it is mostly browser and OS admin type stuff.

But W10s is not the "new" version for everything. As I understand it, it is the "cut down" Windows for use of tabs, phones, and low storage/low RAM machines.

Full Win10 stays basically the same as it is now. Not to say the next update or version won't go the same way in the future.

I just read another article on windows 10, and it reminded me I had made this post.  lol

I am not in a position to purchase another computer nor am I tech savvy enough to truly understand the intricacies of these forced choices.  To me it just seems to be greed forcing people to pay for things that are free from many websites.  Kind of like the IPhone you pay an outrageous price for the phone then pay an outrageous price to use it.  I feel trapped by technology and want to just turn everything off but if I do I will have contact with hardly anyone.

You should get a dog that hates squirrels.  My daughter has a dog who hates squirrels.  You just mention the word and she goes mad, rushing around the garden looking for them.

Head or chest, yes. Any other place you will be going through allot of pellets. Catch them on the ground if possible or they will dig into the tree bark and you will waste allot more pellets trying to knock them out of the trees and the meat will be ruined.

Thanks.  was not sure if I should take the time to zero the scope.  I definitely want one shot one kill but not as steady on the trigger as I once was.  ha.  the rifle seems a lot heavier than my 22 I would guess it weighs 7 to 10 lbs.  Thanks for the confirmation of where to shoot them.  The air rifle is a single shot breakdown pump but it is free as opposed to paying 150.00 for a decent vermin weapon.

  9. Squirrels are killing my flowers this year and really frustrating me.  I have had a few problems over the years but with my neighbor passing away a couple of years ago (he would trap them) the squirrels are breeding to fast and are really digging up my flowers this year.  I borrowed a Ruger Blackhawk Elite .177 Pellet Air Rifle with Scope and have not zeroed it in.  I am wondering if it is powerful enough to kill a squirrel.  I am on the very edge of town and cannot use my 22 rifle but the squirrels need to move or end up in my frying pan.

the fps is around 1000 - 1200 which should be enough to kill at 25 yrds.  your thoughts?

  10. we vary our men's ministry.  we have prayer breakfast a couple of times a year, we have an outdoor barbecue a couple of times, we take in a semi pro baseball team once and usually a Oklahoma City Thunder game once or twice a year.  some times we use a speaker like at prayer breakfast and barbecues and some times we do not.  Our group is a little large for a in home fellowship but we do what we can.  There is also the Stillwater Men's Advance once a year and many of our men go and camp out for the Friday Night preaching and the Saturday classes and preaching.

All in all our men get together seven or eight times a year for fellowship, food and teaching from God's word.

I've only ever used the hot-water pack style to can. That is simply the large canner that can hold 9 quarts. Food is packed into the jars (sometimes hot, sometimes cold, depending on what is being canned), seals put on, and then they are boiled in the water for hours. Not fun when in a humid area without air conditioning. =D

We are interested in looking at pressure cookers, but I don't know if there are any that will can quarts.

This is the only kind we have used and just fro a few jars here and there.  My mother used a pressure cooker but they were dangerous in those days.

  12. Adam, great question I hope you get some answers as I was just telling my wife this week I would like to build a couple of beehives but know nothing about how to go about planning the hive or harvesting the fruit.  I will watch this thread with interest.

  13. I have prayed that the Lord will give you strength, boldness and determination to go beyond suggestions and present to this person God's glorious offer of salvation.  These are the moments hope burns brightest for both the hearer and the presenter.  May God hear our prayers and comfort you during this time.

  14. Always find something to compliment those you are speaking to.

Always leave the door open for a return visit.

Look for opportunities to use your personal testimony of salvation and use that as a stepping stone to talk to the person (s) about salvation.  I do a jail ministry weekly and can tell you I have used my personal testimony to open the door to present the gospel at least a hundred times.  People want to identify with your message of hope and when you share what Christ did in your life they get a picture of real hope.

That last line sums it up. It's a 'faith tradition' to these guys... a comforting tradition and nothing more.

    Amen!

Not sure why you would think this would put us on the side of Far Eastern religions. There's nothing about reincarnation in my post. I just wanted to point out that in the bible, at least the OT, when blood was shed in the land it was to be cleansed by blood. I believe there was even a sacrifice for this under the law.

    sorry.

If it is indeed murder then sometime in the future will God require blood to be shed for all those "fetuses" aborted

The first time I read this sentence it seemed to in infer future payment for sins done in another life time.  My apologies.

It's not a forum rule (I don't think); I was simply surprised to see an IFB endorse a fellowship. That's because my definition of Independent is Independent - no fellowships (or organizations). As such, I would never tell someone to seek one out!  Personal opinion, that's all (although a rather strong one).

I understand what you are saying but I would guess that even if you are independent independent you still choose to fellowship with preachers, schools, churches etc. that are like minded.  How would our colleges survive with out pastors and churches who are like minded supporting those schools and mission organizations?  Even if they do not call themselves a fellowship they still fellowship with one another and together support the schools and the missionaries.  None the less  I appreciate your response and strive to refrain from mentioning the either fellowship on the forum.

Have a great day in Christ.
