MatthewDiscipleOfGod got a reaction from heartstrings in Who Is Your Favorite Pastor Among John Piper, John Macarthur, Max Lucado, Joshua Harris, Aiden Tozer, And Charles Spurgeon. Why?
I don't know if I could call any of them my favorites. Piper is a 7 point Calvinist who thinks Rick Warren has good theology. He is also weak on his conviction of believers baptism. MacArthur has some good theology but is also a Calvinist who allows CCM music in his church and also yokes with people that he should not. Spurgeon was pretty good and even though a Calvinist he did things to get on other Calvinists nerves. David Cloud on the other hand would be one of my favorites.

    PRIVATE REPROOF VS. PUBLIC

    JUNE 5, 2012

(David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org)

The following is excerpted from the new book The Two Jacks: Hyles and Schaap, which is available in print for purchase or as a free eBook from the Way of Life web site -- www.wayoflife.org.

    ___________________

The very fact that there are still many preachers today who believe a public warning about influential independent Baptist leaders is wrong is evidence that the spirit and error of Jack Hylesism is alive and well.

It is time for this heresy to be buried.

They say, “Who do you think you are to speak against such men?”

I can’t answer for others, but my personal answer to that is, “I don’t think I’m anybody at all. I’m just a frail and simple man God saved and called to preach, but I have His authority to speak and so does every other God-called preacher.”

God solemnly charges the preacher to identify false teachers, to exhort, reprove, and rebuke with all authority, to speak as the oracles of God, to earnestly contend for the faith, and even to warn about born-again compromisers (Romans 16:17; 2 Timothy 4:2; Titus 2:15; 1 Peter 4:11; Jude 3; 2 Thess. 3:6; 2 Tim. 4:10). Nowhere in Scripture are these commandments restricted in their scope. Nowhere does God say that a Bible preacher can reprove and rebuke only the members of his own church or that he can reprove and rebuke anyone who errs except an influential Christian leader.

To reprove public sin and error publicly by the Word of God under the guidance of the Spirit of God and in His wisdom is not slander and is not gossip and is not “throwing rocks” and is not “shooting the wounded” and is not hateful and is not dishonoring to Christ.

Private offenses and private sins need to be dealt with privately, but public errors need to be dealt with publicly. When a man builds an ecclesiastical empire, of sorts, and influences thousands of people beyond the borders of his congregation, his errors are no longer private matters and they are no longer matters pertaining only to his church.

When a man admits and repents of a sin or error, that is one thing and is dealt with in a certain way. But when an influential man covers up sins and errors and lies about them and even goes on the attack against those who try to expose them, that is another matter altogether and is to be dealt with in entirely a different way.

We must be very careful about what we say about men of God. We must be careful not to spread unsubstantiated rumors. We must be careful not to give heed to vindictive, disgruntled, backslidden people who are trying to injure the work of God. We must be very wise in what we say and in how we say it. We must make sure that we are speaking the truth, and we must test our hearts before God to make sure we are speaking the truth in the right spirit and for the right reason.

We don’t publicly reprove every pastor who errs or call out every church that compromises. Contrary to the silly and slanderous accusation that some have made against us, we don’t consider ourselves the “policeman of the IFB movement.”

The reality is that some men’s influence is much greater than others. Some men’s ministries effect only their own congregation, whereas some men’s affect tens of thousands.

When the sin of hypocrisy and the compromise of the principles of equality under the gospel was spreading in the early churches, the apostle Paul singled out Peter to rebuke before them all, for the simple reason that he was the most influential personality in that mess.

“But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I SAID UNTO PETER BEFORE THEM ALL, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified” (Galatians 2:11-16).

We must be wise in speaking, but speak we must when the situation merits it. Let us fear God more than man.

“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe” (Proverbs 29:25).

“Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen” (1 John 5:21).

One can hide in the crowd in this life and take his “stand” with the weak-kneed majority, but no one can hide at the judgment seat of Christ.

I would have to think about it. Sword Of The Lord does teach a wrong view of repentance and that is a serious matter. Also, if any of the speakers has CCM in their church we need to separate from them. Discernment is really lacking in many IFB churches and Cloud is a big help to educate IFB leaders. I am not say I always agree with Cloud but he fills a role that I don't see anyone else helping with.

I agree that the pastor should be responsible for "warning the flock", but unfortunately, many pastors have failed...and continue to fail...on purpose, because they don't want to offend anyone, and they don't want to alienate themselves.

Like I said earlier, I don't agree with everything David Cloud says, but I don't think it's necessarily un-biblical for him to do what he's doing...

    This comes to mind...

    Romans 16:17
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

The command is to "brethren"...not just to pastors.

Also, in 1 and 2 Timothy, Paul named the names of false teachers and others who forsook Paul (thereby forsaking correct doctrine) several times (1 Timothy 1:20, 2 Timothy 1:15, 2:17, 3:8, 4:10, and 4:14).

Paul was the church planter, but he wasn't the Pastor of the church when he gave these "warnings"...Timothy was the pastor.

Pastorj and Kitagirl, please know that I'm not trying to argue about this...just stating things as I see them.

Like I said...I don't even agree with myself a lot of the time!

It may not concern you but it concerns us if our church is one of the offenders or is in partnership with one of the offending churches. We need to be very careful who we yoke with. I have seen many churches creep to the liberal side because of who they decided to start yoking with.

My response above was my first reaction to kitagirl's post. But now I justread through the email Cloud sent out regarding his new book on this subject. I see some of the names and compromises he mentions. As far as that goes, he is right.

I have enjoyed reading some of Paul Chappel's devotions for a few years, but have been seriously grieved the few times he quotes people like C.S. Lewis (an unsaved heretic) without warning against him or his writings. Something even as simple as, I don't agree with all his theology, but he made a good point when he said such and such, would have made a difference. Can't remember which church Reese was involved in (Reese Chronological Bible, which was mentioned on these boards recently, not saying Cloud mentioned him, but using him as an example), but that church does not give a warning against the biographies Reese puts out - and some are serious heretics, some even unsaved in certain cases, or at the very least someone we should be cautioned against. The music is a concern that has been creeping into churches more and more. I notice that Clarence Sexton is allowing preachers to come into his pulpit that should never be there. I love his messages, but these kind of things grieve my soul - and they are all aspects of how far does separation go.

So regardless of whether someone thinks Cloud goes too far in his warnings, these are things to be warned about. And many IFBs hate it when someone speaks against one of their churches or preachers - even if it is someone associated with Hyles, etc.

I don't know what the solution is. Being separated from all that is ungodly, worldly, doctrinally unsound, makes someone a serious loner and miserable. Been there. But the solution is not to refuse to separate and to let the world or compromise in. Being backslidden since losing my job at the Mission, I have let in some things that I should not have - partly to fit in with my brother, and partly because I just gave up fighting. BUT that is where the emptiness came in!! Now that God has given me a renewed purpose and opportunities for service, His direction to remove all these things is super clear. It is not me being hypercritical, but obedient.

So is brother Cloud going too far or being too much of a separatist? I don't know - but his warnings are worth heeding. How much they apply to individuals and their ministries or churches is something we would have to gauge for ourselves.

Here is the problem with accepting the new CCM music, in my opinion.
    What is the source?
How do the music leaders and pastors come across these songs?
Well, the answer is pretty obvious.
    1. They are listening to CCM
    2. They are buying the CCM sheet music, music books, etc, and reviewing them for "new songs"
    3. Maybe a combination of both.

And to me, that is a dangerous proposition.
It is one thing to buy the old Stamps-Baxter song books with the "newer" gospel songs that have become "standards" like as I alluded to earlier (i.e. Gaither, Dottie Rambo, even John W. Peterson and Alfred B. Smith.) These song books have the old standard hymns with some of these "newer songs." And the songs I am referring to here as written have good lyrics and appropriate musical style.
When I go to the local Christian bookstore and look through their music books, I have little use for anything "modern" or contemporary. Once I see who produced and wrote it - I discard it. I want no association with the CCM crowd whatsoever. Their doctrine, practice, method, and philosophy are all wrong. They have bought into the New Age Versions which bring along a New Age mentality - whether or not they are aware of it.
If they do accidentally happen to write a good song, time will carry that song forward to be loved and cherished by saints all over the world....and I can live with that.
But I am not ready to go looking for something "new" when we already have more songs from the old days than we know what to do with. The typical hymnal has over 500 hymns. How many of those do we actually sing? Why can't we learn more of those? True - some of them are not fit to sing.....but we could learn more of THOSE, and we would be better for it. (Actually - this is what we do - we try to learn several "new" hymns every year from our Hymnbook - and the people love it!)
Plus, when we add in the other song books - like the Stamps-Baxter Heavenly Highway Hymns - we add how many more "oldies but goodies?"
Then we add in stuff by Garlock and Hamilton....etc. etc. etc.

There is simply too much GOOD music available for us today for us to give ANYTHING by any CCM artist even 5 seconds of consideration.

Acts 17:21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

Have you noticed that the new Majesty hymnal contains music from the Gettys/Sovereign Grace? What is your opinion on that? I find it an outrage that they are digging through garbage to find good music. I think it is sad I can't just buy a CD from a trusted source without knowing if there is CCM behind the music. Why aren't pastors stepping up and writing the Hamiltons? Why aren't we fighting for our music? Why have we stopped caring about associations? Don't people understand as soon as a weaker Christian hears you listening to something like "Amazing Grace My Chains are Gone" they will automatically assume you would listen to Chris Tomlin? We will loose my generation if we do not stand true.

So true. David Cloud says pretty much the same thing in his FREE book Biblical Separatism and its Collapse which I am currently reading. I am blessed to be in a solid IFB church. We can win with facts all the political arguments with a liberal, even showing them the blatant lies and they still cannot see the truth for they are blind and cannot see. Their heart has to change first and the only way that happens is through repentance towards God and faith in Jesus Christ!

MatthewDiscipleOfGod reacted to Steve Schwenke in Concerning Biblical Preaching
I have grown weary of those who attack me for being "mean-spirited, unteachable, arrogant, etc." and then insist that I match their own home-made ideals of being "nice, kind, sweet, gentle, compassionate" all the time. I don't find their ideals in the Bible.
So, in response, I have written this sermon:

Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of

    Luke 9:51-56

There is a great misunderstanding of the nature of our God and Saviour, and consequently a great misunderstanding of how we ought to act as Christians, particularly those of us who are in the ministry.

This passage illustrates two attitudes toward the Lord.
    1. The attitude of the Samaritans – if Jesus Christ did not bow to their demands, they wanted nothing to do with Him.

    2. The over-zealous attitude of the disciples who wanted immediate judgment on the Samaritans for rejecting Jesus Christ.

I have known many over-zealous street-preachers who have neglected the gospel of Jesus Christ and have taken to being as rude and contemptible as possible.

On the other hand, we find many people obsessed with these verses:

Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
2 Timothy 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

These people teach that we are always to be kind, gentle, sweet, humble, etc. They have adopted the worldly philosophy of Norman Vincent Peale and Robert Schuler, i.e. “How to win friends and influence people.”

There certainly is a place for this approach, but it is not universal. It cannot be 100% of the time.

Parents, are you always, nice, sweet, gentle, loving, and kind to your children?
NO! Sometimes we must get after them for their disobedience.
Sometimes we must administer strict discipline to them to teach them that they have erred.

Therefore, we must seek to find that perfect blend of balance – being sweet, kind, gentle, to the appropriate people at the appropriate times, yet being firm, harsh, mean, even to where we might be accused of being proud and arrogant at the appropriate times and places.

Too many people listen to the tone of voice, and mistake anger where there is none, and assume arrogance and pride where there is only compassion and concern.

Consider what I mean by these examples:

    I. Jesus Christ – Matthew 5-7
notice the contrast in the manner of Jesus Christ’s preaching compared to the Scribes:
Mt 7:28And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
Mt 7:29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Matthew 19-20-21 – nice, gentle, firm, confident
Matthew 22 – a little bit more on the offensive
    Matthew 23 – both barrels
Matthew 24 – teaching the disciples, gentle, nice, sweet, kind, truthful

Jesus Christ was the perfect man – He always knew how to respond in every circumstance. Sometimes it was gentle, sometimes it was firm, sometimes it was “mean-spirited.” Sometimes He ignored them (John 8). Sometimes He sought to draw them out (Road to Emmaus).
Three things we can say for certain:
    1. Jesus Christ had the utmost compassion on lost people – Matthew 9:36-38
    2. Jesus Christ was generally patient and gentle with His disciples
    a. Not always – our text, Matthew 16:23, etc.
    3. Jesus Christ had very little time or patience for the self-righteous Pharisees, and rebuked them sharply

    II. Moses
Numbers 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

He was “nice” all the way up to Exodus 32 – the golden calf
He was not very “nice” in Numbers 16 (Korah)
He was not very “nice” in Deut. 28 or 32

    III. Elijah
    a. I Kings 17 – pronounces God’s judgment, but then is kind and compassionate to the widow woman
    b. I Kings 18 – contest on Mt. Carmel
    c. I Kings 21:17ff – Ahab and Nabal
    d. Jesus Christ was mistaken for Elijah
Mt 16:13¶ When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
Mt 16:14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

    IV. Jeremiah
    a. Preached judgment
    b. Was called a traitor
    c. Had personal confrontations – Hananiah – Jeremiah 28
    d. Was so popular that he was thrown into a well, put into a dungeon, falsely accused, and maligned by the princes. The ruling elite never did accept or believe his preaching, and they all paid the price for it.
    e. He preached against false religion, and named names – Jeremiah 7, Jer. 44

    V. Ezekiel
    a. Preached against false religion – Ezek. 8

    VI. John the Baptist
    a. came in the spirit and power of Elijah
    b. Luke 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
    c. Laid into the Pharisees – Matthew 3

    VII. Paul the apostle
    a. Romans – very straightforward, dogmatic, yet reasonable, gentle, kind
    b. I Corinthians – some places are “nice,” but in some places he is sarcastic, and in other places, very rough – I Cor. 4-5
    c. Galatians
i.Rebuked Peter to his face – Gal. 2:11
    ii.O foolish Galatians – 3:1
    iii.Am I therefore become your enemy…4:16

    d. Split with Barnabas over Mark
    e. Names the names of the trouble makers – I Timothy 1:20, II Tim. 2:17, 4:14
    f. Exposes false teachers – I Tim. 4:1ff, 6:3ff; II Tim. 4:1ff, Titus 1:10-16

There is a time and a place for compassion, grace, patience, kindness, gentleness
There is also a time and a place to name names, expose false teaching, expose false religion, rebuke sin sharply, and boldly proclaim, “Thus saith the Lord.”

We must have both sides of the sword.

The great preachers that God has used in yesteryear were not afraid to do this:
Spurgeon was a great gentleman, but a great preacher
    Billy Sunday
    J. Frank Norris
    Sam Jones
    Mordecai Ham

Compare that with today’s popular preachers:
    Joel Osteen
    Joyce Meyer
    Rod Parsley
    Benny Hinn
    Kenneth Copeland

Many of the leading “IFB’s” have adopted this philosophy:

Never get angry Never name names Never speak against anyone else’s religion Flatter their congregations

We should never adapt the world’s philosophy when it comes to preaching. What I have attempted to do tonight is give you a Scriptural view of preaching, and demonstrate that too often people go to extremes – either too harsh, or too sweet.

Proverbs 11:1 A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

I believe Mr. Schwenke has correctly stated the issue.

If you listen to Garlock's entire lecture (i did) you see that he is Biblically centered and on target, even if you may not agree with all his supporting resourses.

If you listen to Howlett's music for any length of time (i did), and if you watch some of his instructional videos (did that, too), you see that he is pedalling what is light jazz lounge music as an acceptable replacement for good music.

Believe i will go with Garlock.

BTW, it has been my experience as a musician; jazz, rock, and country (all former), classical, and sacred; that the ONLY people who will defend rock (and therefore, CCM) music to their dying breath for what it is not are "Christians". The world admits it for what it is.

MatthewDiscipleOfGod reacted to Steve Schwenke in Frank Garlock
Well, I'll take credit for "derailing" the thread. Jerry said he didn't know if God was using Frank Garlock or not because he had never met him. I introduced Wesley to illustrate my point - just because we have not met someone is not the "acid test" as to whether or not God is using someone. And Wesley further illustrates that God will use someone even though they might be wrong on some points. The truth is that we are ALL wrong on some points - including Paul, Peter, the other apostles, and many Baptists throughout history. Just because they are Baptist doesn't mean they are right on every point of doctrine either. Some of the doctrines promoted by different branches of Baptists are extremely contrary to what we believe today...just ask Dr. J. Frank Norris about that!
Garlock might be off-base on some of his supportive points, but most of his teaching is right on target - and the music they produce is excellent - even though I might not agree with him on every little jot and tittle of doctrine. I can appreciate where he is right, and dismiss the rest....just like I can with Wesley, Whitefield, Moody, Sunday, Sam Jones, Mordecai Ham, etc., et al, ad nauseum.

I wouldn't consider one IFB if they are fans of Billy Graham, Rick Warren and the Willow Creek gang. I also believe they should believe in a literal Genesis, the Bible being the final authority and that spiritual gifts such as tongues and prophecy are not for today. You can probably be IFB and listen to CCM but it is a very bad idea for many reasons. Same goes with those that use the newer translations such as the NIV, NASB and ESV that are based off the "Critical Text". Also an IFB isn't going to be a social drinker or smoker and watch Two and a Half Men.

MatthewDiscipleOfGod reacted to Steve Schwenke in Habakkuk 3 - prophecy or history?
The problem is that you guys don't see it when there is a PLAIN AND CLEAR explanation of the symbols given (Rev. 1:20 for example!).
The other problem is that your search for "symbols" destroys the plain meaning of the passage.
Neither of you have had any comments about the problems I brought up about your "interpretation" of Habakkuk 3. The passage CLEARLY AND PLAINLY says that the Lord Himself came down and fought in those battles, and that the mountains were moved.

Habakkuk 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise.
Habakkuk 3:6 He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting.
Habakkuk 3:12 Thou didst march through the land in indignation, thou didst thresh the heathen in anger.

I am even going to try and "interpret" these verses. I am going to believe them AS THEY ARE. These verses say very clearly that the LORD came down to this earth, and when He did, the mountains quaked, the deep utters its voice, and then the LORD marches through the land, and "threshes" the heathen in anger.
There is no dodging those verses. They say what they say, and no amount of "symbollism" will change it.
The only problem is that none of this actually happened in Moses day or Joshua's day.
So, either it is all allegorical and meaningless or it is literally true - but yet future.
Well, it can't be allegorical - because of II Timothy 3:16-17 and II Peter 1:20-21.
    So it must be future.

Me? like I said, I am not imposing any "system" of "interpretation" on these verses. I just read them, and let them stand AS THEY ARE. They say what they say, and that's all there is to it.

I believe that God meant what He said.

Ma’am, your statements and personal attacks towards me show that you are ill prepared to discern good from evil when it comes to government education.

Since the 1800s the goal of public educators and the school unions has been to separate man from God. They do this by promoting secular-humanist values which includes the tenets of socialism and communism, that the State, not God is the highest form of power, moral relativism, all religions equal, promote pride and self-esteem because they believe man can be perfected and worse of all, they promote all manner of sexual deviancies. School psychologists now take your kid out of class without your knowledge and explore their home life. Schools are creating outdoor gardens for meditations and idol worship. The United Nation’s pervert dominated UNICEF, Planned Parenthood and GLAAD are also roaming your school’s hallways spreading their evil agendas too. Have you seen Planned Parenthood’s 5th grade curriculum for children? If you or I showed our children these things we’d rightfully be thrown in jail and labeled perverts, when Planned Parenthood does it with the blessing of the government, it’s called education.

A government school with high grades and lots of awards has them because they are loved by the world, not God. Do you remember this verse dear lady?

“…know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” – James 4:4

Even with classes staffed with Godly teachers the curriculum is still corrupt. A lot of it has been written by the terrorist, Bill Ayers and his academic associates. This guy is a communist who has spent his life shaking his fist at God all while corrupting our children with secular-humanism. Have you read the innocent looking novels that your children have in their classrooms and libraries? I did; one of them taught young girls (3rd grade) the joys of nude sunbathing. Have you researched the authors of these books? Only the most progressive, the most liberal, get all the accolades from the world and therefore access to your child’s heart and mind in the classroom.

I have some suggested reading for you:

“Child Abuse in the Classroom” by Phyllis Schlafly
“NEA: Trojan Horse in American Education” by Samuel L. Blumenfeld
“From Crayons to Condoms” by Steven Baldwin

These are among the titles that I have read personally. There are several others. I was sent to government school as a kid and personally experienced many of the events contained within the pages of these books. Unfortunately so did some of my children before I wised up.

Personally, financial hardship was not an excuse going to win out over subjecting my children to the evils of government education. My wife and I sacrifice greatly to give our children the education that the Lord commands. We moved, cut our expenses to the bone, buy used clothes, only have one car, etc. There were even a few months that I did not have any shoes and couldn’t leave the house because my dog thought they were chew toys. But my children will get a Godly education even if I have to live under a bridge or in defiance of the law or unto death. I love the Lord and my children that much.

Ma’am, you’re thinking is not right on this subject. Please pray and search the Word of God so you can get right with the Lord on this.
