1.
Will, Good post.

We must be sure, whatever we do does not violate the Holy Scriptures the least bit. Whether its play, work, or worship.

For instant;

If I'm searching for a home church, it must be a Bible teaching church that teaches all truths.

If I'm seeking a job, it must not cause me to sin the least bit against God.

If I'm going out to play, for recreation & or entertainment them it must not cause me to compromise Bible teachings. I might add, I fail to understand how someone who claims to be of God can watch a movie, a TV show, or read a book that portrays people in sinful situations and say, "I surely enjoyed it and recommend everyone to see or read it."
I've heard far too many people make disastrous or outright sinful decisions based on their subjective feelings thinking that their feelings was God leading them. I'll give some examples.
"I know my boyfriend is unsaved, but I really have peace about the situation, and God has just opened the door. I just know that God is going to save him if we get married." Nonsense! That's not God! That's your feelings and the devil.

Or how about this one. "God gave me the okay to divorce my spouse and marry this other person. I have peace about the decision." Again, that's not God.

Or how about this from a young man who clearly has no gifting for preaching, or doesn't meet the qualifications, but he "heard a sermon and God called him to preach through the sermon." If you don't have the gifts or the qualifications, that wasn't God calling you. That was emotionalism. There's many times when you won't have peace about any decision, and you have to make a decision. And if you base that decision on the Bible, you're not going to screw up. Look, who you marry, is your decision. What if you marry the wrong person? Did you just screw up the lives of three people who now don't get to marry the right person because you didn't follow God's leading? No, what rubbish!

2. Just wondering how others here on OB go about discerning what God's will is when big decisions or opportunities come up in their life. I guess I'm talking about things like what church to attend, whether to move from one place to another, what profession to pursue, whether to change jobs, who to marry, what school to send your kids to etc.
God gives you a brain and expects you to use it. We don't have to pray and hope God gives us a sign. We have the Scriptures, and in them we discover how to live our lives. And the Scriptures give us godly wisdom, and we'll know what to do because God gives us wisdom.

I've known people who have basically said that if a door is opened to you....it is God's will.
Nonsense. Paul was given open doors but he chose not to go through them. It wouldn't have been sin for him to go through the door, he'd have been doing a righteous thing. But he made a choice based on the wisdom that God had given him.

And I've known others who will not act unless the Lord has given them a specific verse out of the Bible that leads them to believe a certain decision is His will.
More nonsense that doesn't even deserve a response. There's no Biblical basis for this.

How do you guys decide?
If it's not against Scripture, if it's expedient, if it will work, then it's okay for me to do it.

3. Man is not the ruling authority, the local church is, all authority is not given to the pastor, but to the local church. And as long as they make no rules that cause you to sin and or go directly against Bible teaching, they're within their right.

Balderdash. The church only has the right to dictate that which is within the bounds of the Scriptures. You're sounding like a Catholic here.
4. Catholics are starting to join up here again for the purpose of promoting their false doctrine. One of them posted a link to his blog telling how he went from Catholicism to Fundamentalism and back to Catholicism. Somehow or other it got deleted... :wink

There are a couple of Catholic Message Boards on the net that make it a point to gather a few of their people, and invade Protestant and particularly Baptist message boards for the purpose of gaining converts. They have hidden sub-folders on their forums to discuss what, where, who, and how.
5. Hi everyone. Do you all have any tips on witnessing to Mormons?

Have your Bible with you. Be prepared to use it. Don't spend your time attacking their religion(like saying "Joseph Smith was a polygamists false prophet!"), they call that "Bible-Bashing" and it turns them off to what you have to say. On average, it takes a Mormon 7 years from the time they start searching to the time they become a Christian and leave Mormonism. Use questions. Remember when Jesus was asked questions by the Pharisees, he tended to answer their questions with more questions. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you have to answer all of their questions. For example, they like to ask questions like "How can the Bible be God's inerrant word, and have so many contradictions?" Do NOT answer this question right away. Instead, you ask them "What contradictions?" Make them work for their answers. If you spend too much time giving it to them about how the Mormon religion is false, you're going to turn them off to the Gospel and they won't come back. But if you spend time reasoning with them, they're more likely to come back partly to persuade you, and partly to learn more.
6. I would disagree with a church saying you can't wear a certain color. But in all actuality the local church is the authority.

18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
Matt 18:18-19 (KJV)

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Matt 16:18-19 (KJV)

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Matt 28:18-20 (KJV)

The pastor woudl not have this authority, but the local church would, so it would be rebelling against the local church and Jesus to walk in with a certain color on knowing they had said not one is to wear that color. Why do I say and Jesus, for Jesus is the one who gave the local church this power.

I'm pretty sure Jesus wasn't giving them the authority to tell me what color shirt I can wear. Your verses aren't proving your point.

7. You are a man correct? Men don't wear lipstick; unless of course they want to sin against God.

So it's always 100% a sin to wear makeup if you're a man? What about men who wear it on TV? Most newscasters wear makeup, as the lights make them appear pale. Most actors wear makeup. Most political figures wear makeup. Don't be silly.

8. I'm sure that it did, my point was that no one drank it, until your main man Welch invented it. I think you need to do some research, because we all know that no one drank grape juice. Grape Juice is not for drinking, it's for turning into wine.

And you're still wrong. Nice try though.
9. I thought that Baptists were "Sola Scriptura" Christians. I guess I'm wrong. You realize that grape juice was not invented until the late 1800's? You realize that you are not using the Bible. The Bible says wine therefore it is. I think that if it was otherwise God would have said "unfermented wine". You are taking this way out of context. Especially because you have stopped using the Bible. And red wine does have medical effects' date=' people still drink it for them.[/quote']

You're only demonstrating your ignorance of history here. Please stop before I'm forced to make you look even more foolish. Grape juice did indeed exist prior to the late 1800's.
10. P.S. The fruit of the vine is grape juice' date=' not alcoholic wine. Part of the Passover requirements were that no leaven/yeast be in the house or consumed by the Israelites during this time. alcohol contains yeast - and therefore for Jesus to have alcoholic wine during the Last Supper would have gone against His own Word - and He came to fulfill all its requirements.[/quote']

Actually, grape juice contains yeast, the process of fermentation removes it.
11. ok. I'm new here, but I have read all the posts so far in this thread. That said, I did not see some of the verses brought up by holdencaulfield addressed. How should we interpret 1 Tim 5:23 where Paul recommend a little wine to Timothy for medicinal purposes? If it's evil to look upon as some of you say, why would Paul ever recommend it to Timothy?

One other thing. Why is it some interpret the "wine" that is not to be looked upon as alcoholic, but when "wine" is mentioned in the New Testamant it is automatically grape juice? Does this jive with the beliefs & interpretations of the early Church?

Deu 14:26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,

Hello Romans.

Now you're masquerading as a male preacher? Kinda funny, considering he already has an account on this site, and it wasn't the one you named.
