  1. Most probation officers would accept attendance at RU as a legitimate substitute. He would need to get permission first. The big difference with RU and the secular programs is the difference between sobriety and freedom. Sobriety is not using but still having the desire (in other words your miserable). Freedom is when God removes the desire and you enjoy the joy of the Lord.

RU is basically a discipleship program designed to help believers develop a walk with the Lord. Strongholds come in many areas and overeating is certainly one of them. I would not giggle too hard about the folks struggling with the weight issue. Many people deal with this and it robs their joy. There are also some skinny folks who take a very self righteous attitude about it because it is not something they have to deal with (they are blessed with a high metabolism). It is sad how easily the devil can get us divided an at each other. I'll pray for Larry. The secular "A" programs can't provide him freedom. Only Jesus can.

Gene Piazza is a terrific guy BTW.

  2. First off I would like to say how grateful I am that OLB has this section of the board. I have stayed away for while in part because of some of the strife and contention in some of the open topics by people who are not IFB's. It is nice to be in a place where you can let your guard down so to speak. I have also very busy at work, church and as the administrator of the RU boards. Both forums are a wonderful place for Christians to fellowship and learn biblical principles from one another.

I want to thank Brother Matt for his tremendous support of the Reformers Unanaimous Ministry and I would like to encourage OLB members to come visit our forums and allow us the opportunity to help you minister to the addicted in your church and community.

    God Bless!

  3. Total shock, a friend, a deacon, church treasure, he and his wife have declared bankruptcy. It is so surprising to me at the number of Christians who do this. Seems many of them buy and keep buying with the though that if all fails they can declare bankruptcy and keep most of their stuff and start all over again.

If more Christians lived for God and not for this world this would not take place among God's children.

I hear that a lot of people are about to lose their homes, I wonder how many of them are Christians who have rightly overloaded their self, if they had lived for God, not the world, they would not be losing everything and brining disgrace on their Savior.

Why is it so many of us Christians cannot learn to be content? Why do we show so much worldly influence? Our hearts have to be in the wrong place.

I have a family member who was a deacon (still is), church treasurer & SS teacher who declared bankruptcy after his business failed. He eventually paid all his creditors, even though he did not have to. The circumstances that got you there, and what you do after declaring bankruptcy are what should be considered when determining suitability for ministry.
  4. A quick rebuttal of their use of Acts 2:38 can be made by comparing

... baptized... ... for the remission of sins...

    to

...incarcerated... for the commission of crimes...

A prisioner is incarcerated because of crimes committed. A Christian is baptized because of sins forgiven. A prisoner does not get incarcerated to commit crimes and a Christian does not get baptized to get sins forgiven.

They want "for" to mean in order to accomplish, when its context is because of.

Kind of simple but it works.

  5. I believe the taxes paid are paid by the estate and not the beneficiary (US). Best to check with the attorney.

If you want your stepmom to receive the benefit then accept the gift and give it to her. Declining the portion may result in it being spread over several individuals as opposed to your stepmom.

  6. I have a lot of trains (mostly modern era Lionel).

Several years ago I built up very large inventory and sold a lot of stuff at train shows and Christmas tree stands. I sold off most of the show stuff after the time committment got to be too much. It is amazing how much someone will pay for a collectible car that is just a hunk of plastic and metal.

Best advice is to be patient and decide what you can handle with $$ and space. Buy quality and remember it is just a toy.

  7. AMVETS here is just a few guys here who work out of an office helping vets fill out their paperwork. No lodges, clubs or anything like the VFW are ever promoted. Occasionally they send a truck around looking for old clothes as a fund raiser. They have never asked me to join, or to support with $$.

I checked their website and they do have local posts (which I guess would be like lodges). I never would have known about it, except having read it here.

    Their paid staff is here:

    http://www.aMVets.org/HTML/what_we_do/NSO.html

Maybe someone can help help you with your VA claim. The fellow who assisted me is on the page. His name is Denny Boller. Apparently, he has ben promoted!

Up here, they are the best at helping vets.

  8. I filed for service connected disability with the VA, none of those originations that say they will help were of no help to me, not the least bit, I did talk with them, but they did not seem to care. I want bore no one with the details of the birth defect found in my head & neck in 2001, which the Air Force doctor said all the trouble I had was tension headaches, and they still say that was all I had. My conscience is clear, I served my country, if they want to treat veterans as they do, so be it. So far, the only ones I know that got anything out of the VA lied, that I will not do.

I used AMVETS when I retired and they were outstanding in their service. I have had no problems with the VA and I have a relatively high VA disability rating. I know several other retirees who were helped by AMVETS :thumb
  9. Praying for you - and I echo Matt's advice! Maybe you could check and see if there's a Reformers Unanimous in your area. It is a great ministry for those with strongholds in their lives.

  10. Kevin,

I am all for brotherly kindness and charity. I hope that all members of OLB will season their postings here with a hefty dose of it. I do not believe for a minute that you, Will or any of the regulars here want to be stumbling blocks for others. I would hope that if someone cannot show kindness in their disagreement then they would refrain from posting until they could. This should apply whether the poster is right or wrong in whatever issue is being discussed. Harshness and sarcasm are not fruits of the Spirit. Longsuffering, gentlleness and meekness are.

Some advice: If you have been wronged, then why not take the wrong and suffer quietly? Consider your credibility when you are tempted to engage in the activity you say you do not like others doing to you. I really do not think you want this as part of your character.

The Sword has an excellent article on the Christian blogosphere. It's on their website. I really liked it. We should all take it to heart.

    Peace

  11. Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
    (Romans 1:25)
Sounds kind of like what is happening in the KJVO movement doesn't it?

    No, it doesn't.

Talk about lifting verses out of context! Let's see what it says...
Ooops I used the "it" word.

    Romans 1
    18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 ΒΆ Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
    28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

So acording to Kevin's hypothesis, KJVO's are about midway into the slide of depravity. That means KJVO's are willfully supressing knowledge of God in their lives. They have rejected all efforts by God to show them the truth of His glory and instead have turned to false Gods and idols. As a result of this KJVOs are living perverted lives and are just down right nasty people with rebrobate minds who secretly enjoy their rebellion against a holy God.

Is this really true about us?
  12. Kevin,

Will has been a member of OLB for a lot longer than you have (not that it matters). Will used to post here quite a lot when I first showed up here. I saw him at many other sites before I settled on OLB. I don't have a problem with his ministry of standing up for the Bible on the internet. That is between him and the Lord. I have seen many of the attacks against him and it is usually the same crowd of people. I consider him a friend and an ally. You would be wise to as well. You can learn a lot from him, even in spite of your disagreement on his style and his response to critics.

Consider the other poster that drew you into this fray, JTB. JTB (or is it JTSB) shows up here every now and again to mostly challenge our beliefs that the KJV is the preserved word of God for the English speaking people (see the above box). Why would he do that? For fellowship? To edify us? If most of us wanted to read his opinions we could go to BB or some other board and read it there. This is a KJV only site and I really believe he should respect our convictions and desire to fellowship here as such. I am sure JTB is a decent guy and he loves the Lord, but I really don't care for his disrespect for our convictions. My britches aren't big enough to tell him or anyone else to get lost. No one appointed me or anyone else the baptist pope. I simply resist the temptation to flame him and just ignore him and wait for someone like Will to take his post apart.

    Just my :2cents

    Mike

  13. Really Will, you bore me. Go take these arguments back to FF, or KJBO, or ezboard, or one of the many other forums where you go to proselytize the unbelievers to KJVism.

And you called him out for being unkind?

Umm...I use ony the KJV and almost exclusively reject all modern versions...but...non-KJVO people tend to be a whole lot nicer which is probably why there are a lot more of them.

Can we get back to the article Will has posted, in a civil way?
