  1. By the way, God says He would always have a remnant, and that He would give teachers to the church to build them up in the faith. That tells me there are sound teachers and preachers out there that a child of God can glean from. Nowhere did I speak against studying the Word of God itself - but you seem to think that if you put Youtube on repeat and then just listen to the NT over and over without actually reading it and studying it then you will magically learn something. Doesn’t work that way. Understanding the Word of God comes from abiding in it and taking the effort to study it. John 8:31-32 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
  2. I didn’t name any specific preachers or commentators - other than actually quoting Spurgeon - so you are in no position whatsoever to state they were filled with errors. By the way, if all are filled with errors, that includes you too! Therefore making what you are saying of no value whatsoever. ?
  3. So Wretched, God can guide you and other men today - but He couldn’t do that in the past? That is exactly what we find in sound books and Bible commentaries. “Of course, you are not such wiseacres as to think or say that you can expound Scripture without assistance from the works of divines and learned men who have laboured before you in the field of exposition. If you are of that opinion, pray remain so, for you are not worth the trouble of conversion, and like a little coterie who think with you, would resent the attempt as an insult to your infallibility. It seems odd, that certain men who talk so much of what the Holy Spirit reveals to themselves, should think so little of what he has revealed to others. My chat this afternoon is not for these great originals, but for you who are content to learn of holy men, taught of God, and mighty in the Scriptures. It has been the fashion of late years to speak against the use of commentaries. If there were any fear that the expositions of Matthew Henry, Gill, Scott, and others, would be exalted into Christian Targums, we would join the chorus of objectors, but the existence or approach of such a danger we do not suspect. The temptations of our times lie rather in empty pretensions to novelty of sentiment, than in a slavish following of accepted guides. A respectable acquaintance with the opinions of the giants of the past, might have saved many an erratic thinker from wild interpretations and outrageous inferences. Usually, we have found the despisers of commentaries to be men who have no sort of acquaintance with them; in their case, it is the opposite of familiarity which has bred contempt” (Spurgeon, Two Lectures Addressed to the Students of the Pastor’s College, Metropolitan Tabernacle).
  4. It is a good starting place - however, the site promotes solely listening to the NT over and over again.
  5. Dallas Willard is a heretic and Tony Evans is an Emerging Church leader. Both should be avoided or read with extreme discernment, comparing all that is said with the Word of God. Galatians 5:9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. Proverbs 19:27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge. Bonhoeffner believed in and taught a works-based salvation (especially in The Cost Of Discipleship - ie. continuing to the end to BE saved). A Shepherd Looks at the 23rd Psalm was written by Phillip Keller who denied the supernatural aspects of the Bible - therefore was unsaved! He denied the miracles, the virgin birth, etc. Ugh, maybe I shouldn’t visit this thread. I can’t stand by while people are led astray, even unknowingly.
  6. Um, Wretched, reading that page you link to is not a good resource. Yes, listening to, reading and studying the KJV is good - but not hyper-focussing on the New Testament alone. Also, a site that promotes that your salvation is based on continued listening to the KJV is suspect! There is absolutely nothing wrong with using sound study materials and commentaries. What you will find is most “solo” Christians that cast off any “man-made” materials, such as commentaries, sermons, Bible study materials, etc.** eventually go by the wayside themselves - because they have no check on their understanding of the Word of God. If they misunderstand something or don’t know what certain words mean, they they wing it and get sidetracked or worse. Using sound (double emphasis on SOUND) Bible study materials and commentaries opens up the Word of God to us - or do you think you are the only person God ever guided in the study of His Word. Sound Bible Commentators and preachers of the past - hey, even your pastor if he is soundly preaching and teaching from God’s Word - can help us in our study of the Bible. **Of course we need to practice discernment and use materials that build upon our understanding of the Word of God and open it up to us - not question or cast doubt on it.
  7. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. There are not multiple gospels of salvation in the Bible. Some passages need to be studied out and compared with other passages to clarify them at times. Repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, be baptized because your sins are remitted through belief in His death for your sins, burial and resurrection. Also, the Holy Spirit is given to every one that is born again - though there was a transitional period first where the Holy Spirit first indwelled the Jews, then the certain Gentiles, then everyone else (see Acts 2, 10, 19). God allows seeming Bible difficulties to discourage the willing lost from receiving the truth - but allows true believers to understand and clarify the meaning of His Word continuing in it.
  8. There has never been a lost person that kept the law of God before salvation. That is what the book of Romans teaches: all have sinned, all are guilty before God, all need salvation - whether Jew or Gentile. The controversy Romans speaks to the Jews about was that they could not accept a Gentile as being saved and now righteous in God’s eyes (not that they were righteous prior to receiving the Saviour and being credited with His righteousness, but that now those who were not Jewish were now fulfilling the Law through faith in Christ).
  9. The word repentance may not be in John, but the concept certainly is! John 5:14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. John 8:11 -- She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
  10. The Bible teaches that ALL the lost are at enmity with God before salvation. Certainly not obeying the Lord (which Jesus defines as how we show our love to Him); and definitely not having the live of God in us. I’m sure the religious lost may have fluctuating emotions for or against God at various times; however, that is not Biblical love. Brother Tony, that is referring to saved Gentiles - ie. how they were after salvation - not how some might have been before salvation.
  11. Yes, another thing Anderson was super wrong about: he denied that repentance was part of salvation (ie. repent of your sin when turning to Christ for salvation).
  12. The word gospel means good news - but the Bible uses it in reference to good news in regards to salvation - the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There are not multiple “gospels” spoken of in the Bible, merely various terms to refer to the one Gospel.
  13. My sister used to go to his church when he first started it. He actually told me on the phone that his Bible was Jesus Christ (not that it told him about Jesus Christ, but his Bible was Christ). Now, somewhere around 20 years later, I can’t remember the exact context of the conversation - but I questioned him about certain of the things my sister was being taught, that came up and I spoke to him enough to clarify what he was saying and that I was not misunderstanding him. I wasn’t. That sound like a cult to me - regardless of any of his other quirks.
  14. Steve Anderson and his followers would definitely qualify for cult status. They have some serious quirks and wrong doctrinal beliefs.
  15. The Bible from beginning to end only teaches one plan of salvation. Since the fall of man, salvation has always by placing faith in the coming Messiah, the substitute who would die in our place for our sins. The level of knowledge varied in each dispensation - and as the word dispensation itself means, there were/are different rules to live by in each dispensation (literally meaning “house rules”), but salvation has always been the same: salvation by grace through faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary, where He shed His blood and died in our place, bearing the full wrath of God as our substitute, dying, then literally rising from the dead three days later, proof positive that His sacrificial death - His atonement for our sins - was accepted by God the Father.
  16. There are various verses in the Bible that teach we can only pray to and praise the Lord before we go to the grave. Psalms 6:5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? Psalms 88:10-11 Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah. Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction? There are no (other) Biblical examples portraying anyone praying to the Lord while dead and in Hell or Abraham’s Bosom. Also, Jonah was saved/righteous. He would have been in Abraham’s Bosom, not suffering fire and thirst in Hell; therefore his statement about being in Hell was figurative, not literal - considering that he was in the belly (ie. stomach) of the whale according to verse 1, and probably experiencing burns from the stomach acid, not the actual flames of Hell. Jonah 2:1-2 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
  17. Quote by Matthew Henry on Hebrews 10:34 (contrasting with verse 1): What it was that enabled them thus to bear up under their sufferings. They knew in themselves that they had in heaven a better and a more enduring substance. Observe, [1.] The happiness of the saints in heaven is substance, something of real weight and worth. All things here are but shadows. [2.] It is a better substance than any thing they can have or lose here. [3.] It is an enduring substance, it will out-live time and run parallel with eternity; they can never spend it; their enemies can never take it from them, as they did their earthly goods. [4.] This will make a rich amends for all they can lose and suffer here. In heaven they shall have a better life, a better estate, better liberty, better society, better hearts, better work, every thing better. [5.] Christians should know this in themselves, they should get the assurance of it in themselves (the Spirit of God witnessing with their spirits), for the assured knowledge of this will help them to endure any fight of afflictions they may be encountered with in this world.
  18. Psalm 11:5 (KJV) The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. I guess you answered your own question. If you love the violence in violent video games, then you are either a carnal believer or unsaved. When the Lord tries you and sees that you take pleasure in what He is against, then He cannot take pleasure in you. He hates your sin - and if your lifestyle, imagination, heart desires, etc. is reflective of your spiritual condition, then He very well may hate you (ie. if you are unsaved and living in rebellion to the Lord and His Word). If you profess to be saved, then you should desire the things of God, you should desire to please Him in the way you live, in what you take pleasure in (even in regards to your entertainment). If not, then you are telling on yourself. Hebrews 12:14 (KJV) Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
  19. Good idea. Thanks. Revelation 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
  20. My favourite preachers that I listen to on podcasts are J. Vernon McGee (Thru The Bible series - I am aware of the few spots he is off, so tune those parts out - but also his various sermons), Clarence Sexton, Alan Cairns and William McCrea. These last two are solid KJVonly Free Presbyterians - so some differences, but I have been blessed by literally hundreds and hundreds of their sermons over the years. In fact, Sexton and McCrea each have preached at the other's church various times over the years.

    A Word Fitly Spoken

Fervent Charity 1 Peter 4:8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. The Greek word for “fervent” is used only two times in the NT; the other time it is translated as "without ceasing." Strong's gives this definition: stretched out. Metaphorically, intent, earnestly, assiduously. A dictionary I have (Funk & Wagnalls) says "assiduous" means devoted, attentive; unremitting, persistent. "Assiduity" (a different form of the same word): close and continuous application or effort; diligence. "Unremitting" means not relaxing or stopping; incessant. “Fervent charity” (which Matthew Henry defines as love towards both God and man) would then be love that does not cease, that we persist in, that we do not let relax or stop. With the idea of being "stretched out", it implies that it is something we must put continuous effort into to be of lasting spiritual benefit to others. And that's the love that will enable us to cover the multitude of sins in the lives of those around us, to hide or conceal those sins rather than continually rehash them or keep bringing them to our minds or the minds of others. Matter of fact, isn't that what Jesus did to our sins? Covered them by His blood, and then washed them away so when our Heavenly Father looks at us, He doesn't see our sins and transgressions, He sees the righteousness of His Son instead. Praise the Lord for His fervent love towards us. Let's learn to show that same love to others. Jerry Bouey June 10/2021.
  22. I know I am not where I once was in regards to writing devotionals and studies - but I am still studying, and sharing different word studies to encourage and exhort the believers around me. Tonight, the Lord impressed upon me to turn that into a ministry and use what He is teaching me now, even if it is somewhat different than what I used to write. Proverbs 25:11 says, A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. I can go through my emails and texts to my friends sent out in the last few months and see what apples of gold I can share with my brothers and sisters here on these boards. If I post a date with a word study, it is mostly a gauge for me to know when I originally sent it out - then I am reminded of when in my life the Lord emphasized those devotional thoughts on my heart and mind. Please feel free to interact with the word studies posted, give me your feedback, and I trust the Lord Jesus Christ will bless you and He has blessed me in studying His Word and digging a little deeper as I walk with Him. Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. The Greek word for uttermost is panteles. The root word pan means “all, every.” Teles and the word Jesus used in John 19:30 for “It is finished” come from the same root word meaning “(to set out for a definite point or goal); properly, the point aimed at as a limit, i.e. (by implication) the conclusion of an act or state).” Just as everything needed to save us was done at Calvary (ie. by our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, shedding His blood, bearing our sins and suffering God’s wrath in our place) - It is finished! - even so, will all be done in and through us (the process of calling us, justifying us, sanctifying us, glorifying us - in fact, every single thing that our Lord promises to do for us in regards to our salvation) will be done by Jesus. Just as He finished the work of dying for our sins on Calvary, even so will He do all things needed to make us fit to dwell eternally with Him - from the guttermost to the uttermost, as they say. Jerry Bouey July 31/2021.
  23. Thank you for posting some verses from Psalm 1. Any thoughts on the contents of the devotional or the passages shared in it?
  24. Funny, I was just reading a book earlier today that was referring to Tony Evans and stating he was a leader in the Emerging Church movement…
