    I don't disagree. I could have worded that statement better. I was thinking of it how they would have viewed how a national state church could influence the government and vice versa. The formation of the Episcopal Church was a way for them to retain the religious tradition from the Church of England but without the influence of the King or any other politicians. After the hindsight of seeing how both the Church of England and the Catholic Church before them used it's political influence I would've thought there would be a purposeful effort to avoid the formation of the Church of America.

    Sounds like you have a better understanding of American History than many Americans. The biggest concerns were America turning into any type of theocracy, and the government being able to dictate to the church.

    I don’t think the American founders wanted a ‘distinct separation between church and state’ so much as they wanted the state to stay out of their religious choices and to not have to pay tithes to a state church. And even that had to be fought for by the Baptists; other church groups in early America were fine with a state church (as long as it was theirs).
