Very good post Madeline!

I agree that adultery isn't what begins a marriage problems but a symptom of a marriage already in trouble.

In todays culture where so many people believe they have a "right to be happy" there is the tendency to expect ones spouse to provide that happiness and when they don't accomplish this 24/7 there is the warped belief it's okay to look elsewhere for that ever elusive "happiness".

Scripture says we are to guard our hearts. The current case of the SC governor is an example of what happens when one doesn't guard their heart. Even after admitting his affair and saying he wants to work things out with his wife, this man declared that his mistress is his "soul mate". Such a feeling/belief could only come about because he gave that other woman part of his heart that rightly belongs to his wife.

Along with guarding our heart, Scripture tells us to flee temptation. Never place yourself in a place where temptation could flare and sin could errupt. Don't spend time alone with those of the opposte sex who are not your spouse...and this applies to unmarried as well as married folks. No late night work at the office alone with the opposite sex, no shacking up, no meetings alone 'just to talk', etc.

Guard your heart, flee temptation, never believe you can be alone with the opposite sex without temptation and/or sin coming forth as Scripture warns that such pride leads to a fall, keep your expectations biblical and turn only to your spouse for fulfillment in areas of marital type intimacy, keep in the Word, prayer, and growing in the Lord so that YOU are the spouse YOU should be regardless of where your spouse is with the Lord at any given time.
