Three of Donald Trump's rivals for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination are pushing for cuts to Social Security benefits that would only affect younger Americans, as the party's leaders grapple with the explosive politics of the retirement program.

In comments on Sunday as well as in interviews earlier this year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said Social Security will need to be revamped - but not for people who are near or in retirement.

Social Security shouldn't need to be cut for anyone. But, the sad truth of it is that since both parties have been looting it by including it in the national budget, where it was never intended to be, it will NEED to be cut to some degree for younger Americans. To cover the costs of keeping the nations pledge to the Baby Boomers to help meet their retirement needs, generations after the Boomers will have to continue to pay more and accept less. It's not going to be the first time SS has been revamped. The sky is not falling, TGL.

Social security needs to be done away with for younger americans. Let them learn to save and take care of themselves rather than trusting a "government" to do it for them. Then, because pols have robbed SS, let THEM get their salaries cut and the "monies saved" go into SS to take care of the current SS receivers who paid into it believing (naively) that it would still be there for them in their retirement. And I say that as one who is receiving their "retirement."

But as one who never believed that the government is honorable and my money would be there whne it's time.

I fully believe SS should be done away with for those who are presently under the age of 30. With most corporations offering options to save for retirement, and the huge number of reputable financial counseling services out there to guide those under 30 to a successful retirement strategy, it easily could be done away with. Of course, we still would need something for the disabled, but, that, too, could be handled by most families if they did what was right and cared for their own like generations past have done.

Concerning those in our Congressional offices having their pay cut...a huge amount of agreement here. It was never meant to be a full time job... EVER. It still shouldn't be. With all of the technological advances we have had the past few decades, most everything could be done via the internet, telephone, zoom, and fax. The only thing that they would really need to be there in person for would be debates and voting.
