God tells us thou shall not murder , yet in 1 Corinthians 10:8(KJV), he kills 23,000 in one night?

I though God forgive you when doing a sin , this is a harsh example of God going to rain down on you if you commit fornication, can someone explain ?

Please define to me what the definition of murder is.  This is important to understand why God does what He does and to understand if God broke one of His own commandments (Ex. 20:13), so after you define that for me, I can proceed to answer your question.

The apostle Paul was referencing Numbers 25 where disease women form Moab had infiltrated the camp and were intentionally spreading disease and a false sex cult religion. God had promised to protect the people of Israel if they were obedient to his law and covenant but if they partook in the sins of the people around them and rejected his laws then God said they would also partake in their punishments of sexually transmitted disease that had been placed upon the wicked who practiced fornication as a form of worshiping their false Gods.

Exodus 15:25-26 And he cried unto the Lord; and the Lord shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, 26 and said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.

We see the same today. While our particular sexually transmitted viruses we have today are not as bad as the one they experienced we still see that those who sleep around will most likely contract and carry many STDs while those who only have one sexual partner, with their union protected by the marriage covenant, will not have any STD. In this we learn that STDs are a punishment from God upon those who reject his word. We are God's creation so he can do whatever he wants with us. In His creation he set certain things in motion to fulfill certain functions (viruses, bacteria, and other very small creatures, etc) but because of the sinful environment man has created these things can mutate and or get into places that they shouldn't be that can harm us. If we do not follow His warnings then He will allow theses things to harm us as a form consequences of our rebellion and freewill.

God is the judge and He is a jealous God.  What Paul is referencing is in Numbers 25 as John Young pointed out.   This is in reference  to the children of Israel committing idolatry and fornication in the land of Moab.   There is one in particular, along with his men, joined himself to Bealpeor.  This kindled God's anger.  God then tells  Moses to hang all the heads of the people and hang them up so that  Gods anger will be will be turned away from Israel.  So Moses commanded the Judges of Israel to slay every man  that was joined unto Baalpeor.    The  other incident that followed was that a man of Israel brought in a woman that had the plague.   One of Aarons sons  slew both the man and the woman with a javeline.  He  pierced the woman through the belly.  This  killing was to stop the plague from spreading any further, and 24,000 died of the plague.

1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. 2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. 3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. 4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel. 5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; 8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. 9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.1  12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: 13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel. 14 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.2  15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.
