God's word on opposite sex physicians and nudity.

I have some strong feelings about this especially in the context of females seeing a male ob/gyn. That said I would even have to think twice about my wife having a GP (general practioner) who is male. I am looking for specific verses or verses that teach the precept of not being naked in front of the opposite sex that is not your spouse.

I will add this commentary and yes, I know the author is a rather controversial Baptist preacher, but personality aside looking at his argument and the verses on their face alone. I can't see how anyone in good conscience can argue against what he is saying.

What's Wrong with Male Gynecologists?

by Pastor Steven L Anderson, 2006

1. Is nudity before the opposite gender a sin?

2. Are male obstetricians or gynecologists condoned in the Bible?

3. Are male gynecologists professionals or perverts?

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.” – Ephesians 5:11, 12

“I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.” – Revelation 3:18

“So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.” – Proverbs 6:29

1. Is nudity before the opposite gender a sin?

We are living in a day when the overwhelming majority of Christians and non-Christians alike believe in situational ethics.  “The end justifies the means” seems to be the philosophy of today’s independent Baptist churches.  God, on the other hand, has always been the God of moral absolutes.

Is nudity before the opposite gender a sin?  Well if it is, then it must always be a sin, whether at an xxx theater, a swimming pool, or in a doctor’s office.

In the Bible, the only nakedness allowable between a man and a woman is between husband and wife.  Genesis 2:25 reads, “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” Within the confines of marriage nakedness is totally permissible.  However, in Leviticus 18, God goes into great detail condemning nakedness between brother and sister, father and daughter, mother and son, aunt and nephew, uncle and niece, grandfather and granddaughter, and the list goes on and on.

God also admonishes us repeatedly throughout the Bible to be fully clothed.  Nakedness in the Bible is associated with the word “shame.”  One of the many examples of this association is found in Isaiah 47:3a, “Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen:” as well as in Revelation 3:18 (above).  Exodus 28:42 reads, “And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach.”  God is commanding here for a man to wear pants or shorts that cover his entire thigh (down to the knee) in order not to be naked.  Isaiah 47:2-3 reads, “Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.  Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.”  God shows us again here, in this case with a woman, that the thigh being uncovered is considered nakedness by God.  Repeatedly throughout the New Testament, God commands women to be clothed in modest apparel because nakedness is undoubtedly a sin.

2. Are male obstetricians or gynecologists condoned in the Bible?

Given that nudity before a person of the opposite gender is a sin, why is it a commonly accepted practice among Baptists and others for a woman to be naked and examined by a male doctor?  This most disgusting practice is totally unfounded in God’s word.  OB/GYN's (doctors of pregnancy and women's health) are considered somehow immune from the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes.  If God is so against nudity between members of the opposite gender, why would he allow a man called a doctor to examine a woman’s naked body throughout her pregnancy and up to the birth as if he were somehow immune from sin or God’s laws?

Throughout the Bible, women who are pregnant or giving birth are attended by “nurses” or “midwives.”  Not one time in God’s word is there mention of a woman being examined nude by a man who is a medical professional.  God intended women to assist other women with these types of medical issues.  Women have been giving birth to children for the last 6,000 years without the aid of male doctors, and yet Christians today seem to think that a woman must expose herself to a male doctor in the name of medicine.  This is totally ridiculous and contrary to God’s word.

Many have used the argument, “Oh, they’ve seen it so many times; it no longer affects them.”  This is exactly the opposite of reality.  Men who look at nudity and pornography for extended periods become more perverted, not less perverted.  If the appetite for nudity is fed, the appetite increases not diminishes.

Others have used the argument, “Oh, my gynecologist is a nice elderly man. He isn’t thinking any dirty thoughts.”  That old man was once a young man who decided to go to school to be an obstetrician/gynecologist in order to examine women in intimate areas.  We have strained at the gnat of women giving birth with the help of experienced women or midwives, and we have swallowed the camel of godly, Christian women exposing themselves to a strange man in a doctor’s office.  God help us!

Independent, fundamental Baptist preachers stand up in pulpits across America and breathe fire about mixed swimming, immodest clothing, nudity on television, dancing, mini-skirts, etc., as they should, but why don’t they have the morals or courage to condemn this practice which is more revealing and more wicked than any of the others mentioned?!

3. Are male gynecologists professionals or perverts?

Jeremiah 17:9 reads, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”  What kind of a man would go into a profession of examining women’s private parts?  Don’t tell me that he is not made of the same sinful flesh that every other man is made of.  No man can look at pornographic images and not be affected.  This is why God commands us repeatedly to set no wicked thing before our eyes.

Because of years and years of looking at and touching scores of women inappropriately, the male gynecologist no doubt has a seared conscience and a perverted mind (I will not go into detail of what goes on in the doctor’s office for decency’s sake, but any woman who has been there knows what I am referring to.).  His view of women and the marital bed has certainly been warped by his indecent involvement with countless women.

May God help preachers in this generation to make the Bible their authority, not tradition, and call this ungodly practice what it really is – sin.  Any doctor that looks upon and touches a woman’s private parts in his office “hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”  Sir, if you let your wife go to a male gynecologist, you need to get right with God.

Actually, it is very easy to dismiss his use of these scriptures:

1. This presupposes that this medical procedure is sinful, it does not designate it so.

2. This is talking specifically of spiritual nakedness, not physical.

3. This specifically speaking in terms of sexuality.

Not one of these specifically applies to the medical issues you are talking about, in which no sexuality is the subject.

Don't  get me wrong, I actually lean towards your position.

But Steven Anderson once again takes verses out of context, and misapplies them, and draws conclusions based not on the Bible, nor on facts, but from his own twisted mind.

Even in this he is walking in dangerous territory.

I personally would prefer a woman doctor for my wife and girls, and a male doctor for myself and my boys, but would prefer above all else the best doctor available.

But I think it is a hard matter to "prove" biblically.

I would personally strongly prefer a woman doctor, but would be thankful for whatever medical help I can get! I suspect that most women would prefer female doctors and midwives, but the fact is that they are few and far between.  This mindset of 'women must not be seen by male doctors ever' is very dangerous, as it has prevented women from receiving medical attention. Historically there have been far more male than female doctors.  Isis shut down medical ob-gyn clinics to avoid the possibility of women being attended by a male doctor. The practical effect (for the women) was that they were without medical assistance entirely. Not cool!

There is a time and place for moral concerns, but I strongly suspect that this particular attitude, historically, has been far more about misogyny than morality. It hurts women (and children).

I notice that Mr. Anderson isn't saying anything about men seeing lady doctors - funny how his concern about supposed immorality in the medical profession only applies when it is women that are seeking medical attention!

And he totally dismisses the concept that a doctor can dismiss himself (or herself) from sexuality in the course of their duties.

And what about nurses,  who are historically far more often women, attending medical procedures on men which could be considered "delicate"?

And unfortunately today we must also consider those of either sex who are not heterosexual. Under laws in most places today you are not even allowed to ask that question.....

I agree with what Dave said in both of his posts.

I currently have a female doctor, for the first time in my life (other than one visit with my OB's co-doctor when I was expecting our son - and I didn't care for her at all). I'm not convinced she's the best around...but I don't believe it's a sin for a woman to have a male doctor.

Interestingly, the only physician in the Bible whose gender we are given is Luke.

I'm a man I have a male GP, a male Internalist, and prefer a male Dr. for men. I prefer my wife and daughters have a woman Dr.

However, I would want the best Dr. available for any serious condition.

I will be going to see a gastroenterologist NP woman in July, not my choice. I will be discussing a burning pain up under my right rib cage. I won't need to disrobe or wear a gown for this discussion.

In good conscience,  a way not even understood ,  as well as what follows >

I am nobody.     'hear me roar' ?  no.   A voice crying in the wilderness?  yes.

Not very loud.   Not very popular.   VERY controversial....  Yet truth,  unadulterated truth.

Why is truth so rare ?  (according to the Bible)

Why has witchcraft and sorcery (according to the Bible: Revelation 18)

deceived the whole world ?  (that is what it says,  in all the translations except for possible unknown translations, or in the original)

Go ahead,  throw the book at me.   Ignore me.   Don't even bother to pray about this or to seek the truth concerning this....   I'm not able to 'care',  nor to add any weight to the proof,  nor to give a convincing details as if to change anyone's mind today - just like (or not?) the above posts... did anyone change their mind about anything ?

Well,  in case anyone can benefit,  it is possible that the medical procedure (any procedure) can possibly be holy in God's View - not sin.  But it is rare for it to be.

(any procedure to be not sinful) .....  by man, woman or child.

I doubt anyone reading knows what I am getting to yet....  it is so simple, pure and truth...  straight from the original Scripture ....   yet never once translated simple, pure and truth as far as I know - of perhaps rather never, or almost never,  understood as to what God means ....

Instead,  as may be true of many other things, or few, God knows,

the traditional way , the carnal way, the worldly way of deciphering God's Word is so long set in the world and in the true church people even (since everyone grew up in the world which world is deceived) ,

and so much money is to be risked/ profits lost/  shame compounded beyond measure,  for those who deceive the world as written in Revelation...(no matter who they are, or when, or why) ....

I , too, was also under the prince of the power of the air at first,  with all the sons of disobedience throughout all the world/ all mankind/

as written in Ephesians 2.   Unless God had spared me,  I would still be lost, totally, and still be deceived, totally,  even though I was an avid Bible 'scholar' , Bible reader,  devoted totally to God (I thought),  yet until the truth is revealed,  I had no idea...

Earth shaking news ?    ... ...  ... yes... ... ... from  a nobody ?  ... ... ... yes...   Like the woman at the well,  who ran back to town to tell the good news...  I have good news....  but do not believe me for anything I claim or am or state.

Talk to Jesus personally as the townspeople did - then they told the woman "we believe Jesus now,  because we have talked to Him ourselves,  no longer because of what you told us"  (paraphrased) ....

oh....  it still takes time...  hours, days, weeks, months, years,  to learn the truth, to unlearn the world's ways ...  and just like most of you,  I thought I was free of the world's ways ...   then discovered purely in God's Grace that I still had a lot to learn,  and to unlearn ... things I thought were true, that were opposed to the truth...  (this is censored by common search engines, faisebk, and other media, btw) ....  so let me just say,  look up the original words in a book like Strong's , or BlueLetter Bible...  what deceives the whole world ?  Think about that, in prayer, a lot, .... how many witches and sorceries do you see daily on tv,  in the media,  in the news,  in politics ,  anywhere in fact,  deceiving the whole world ?   I never saw any even when I look for them - same with other people I ask - they can't think of any at all... yet supposedly those things are deceiving the whole world ....  the original word gives a clue.

As far as I know,  none of the English translations gets it correct,  not even one of them....  or,  well,  it might be said that they do ,  but people never are told the full extent of what it includes - because it looks so normal and accepted by everyone from birth thru old age ...  everyone is told to trust the _________... and warned against going against them... (federal law put in place by them prohibits using anything they do not approve of (the things that actually work) ) ....

Well,   call me crazy... go ahead....  or stupid,  or vain,   or empty-headed,  or whatever ....

but do not go against God's Word,  ever.....   He Reveals to little children what He hides from the educated....  (I was well-educated, and did not know the truth....  like some in the Bible,  I now consider all things I once had or knew to be a loss,  a dung pile,  compared to the experiential knowledge of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord) ....  I had to give up everything people said and say is valuable and held in high esteem,  to learn what God Says is always Truth... and people (the world) are wrong.

I know this is an old thread but it doesn't have to be an issue of "opposite sex" here. My brother had a male doctor (a man who was once a deacon in his church) proposition him during an examine. He even exposed himself to my brother in the examination room.

These days you may have more  issues with the same sex than the opposite. I've had two female doctors who were very good doctors (I still credit the one for saving my life) and there was never an issue. I guess this all depends on the individual and I would imagine it would be more of a concern for female patients with male doctors especially in a certain medical field. That's where you should follow your conscience.

Interestingly, I just recently went to get some x-rays on my back, first time I have seen a doctor for anything in 15+ years. And got a female. Had to drop trou, but she gave me a covering, so I maintained my modesty. Though she DID see my bones, so not sure how I should feel about that.

I thought Pastor Steven Anderson addressed some important issues about male gynecologists, but I did not agree with his last sentence: Sir, if you let your wife go to a male gynecologist, you need to get right with God.

That was too harsh. I wish he had not said that because we have been indoctrinated to accept that anything is okay in name of medicine. It's a cultural blind spot.  I believe that a majority of women who have gone to a male gynecologists are victims.  The lady in the below video shares that she had to endure male gynecologists when she first needed a gynecologist in the 1970s because there were no female gynecologists.

Most people are not aware that male gynecologists and opposite sex intimate were invented by medical schools in the 1800s. Before 1800s, religious doctrine did not allow males to deal with intimate parts of women. Midwives and female nurses took care of women's health issues before 1800s. Medical school would not allow women to be doctors and this is why we did not have female gynecologists for a long time. Fortunately, that has changed.

While it is wonderful that we have improvements in the medical field such as C-Sections that have cut down on maternal deaths and surgeries for gynecologic cancers, it does not mean that male gynecologists are okay. Only women should have been allowed to become gynecologists in the beginning. Medical School followed worldly standards rather than God's word.

There was no evidence of intimate procedures done on women in the Bible. Remember that modern medicine was invented in 1800s and this is when male doctors begun to perform pelvic exams on women.

I encourage you all to read this article, Are Male Gynecologists Biblical? and watch this video, Modesty in Medical Settings From a Biblical Perspective:

If my choice was to get good care and live by going to a woman doctor or getting bad care and dying by going to a bad male doctor the choice would be pretty easy. This all seems like a tempest in a teapot to me.

Indeed the best doctors and PA's I've seen the last 30 years were female.

Now if you are insisting on being a literalist on this topic then to be consistent you should not afford yourself to modern medicine as it may keep you alive and not be what God's will  was for you.

I agree with bill, all except for the last sentence. You have a choice, you can go to the doctor of your choice. If you are a female and not comfortable with a male doctor, don't go to one. My experience with a female doctor may be different than others, but the one I go to I find very competent, personable and knowledgeable. She makes the patient feel comfortable and even jokes about any possible male/female concerns. On one visit we talked about this subject and she said that I would find that she was much gentler than a male doctor.

I just don't get this idea that all gynecologists are perverts. Going by that logic, then all male doctors who treat females also must be perverts.
