Matthew 12:38-40 King James Version (KJV)

38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:

40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

The Pharisees and Scribes had already seen plenty of signs from Jesus throughout his ministry, but they hated that he taught against their unbiblical traditions. Jesus said that an evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign. The scribes and Pharisees had everything they needed in the Old Testament to know that Jesus was the Messiah, See Mic 5:2, Is 7:14 for examples. It seems that the asking of a sign was not really that they genuinely wanted to know if Jesus was the Messiah, but they were seeking to try and catch him doing something they could condemn, at one point they tried to condemn Jesus for healing on the sabbath day.

Jesus refers to Jonah as a sign to them. Jonah spend 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of a fish that God had swallow him up and then ultimately it spit him back out. This was to be a picture or sign that pointed to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Read Jonah chapter 1 and 2 to see more about Jonah.

The point of the passage is that we shouldn't ask God to give us miraculous signs to validate truth about God. We are told that

2 Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

We have everything that we need to know about God in the scriptures, the Bible. There are too many people out there that depend upon their experiences and "signs" to tell them what is true or not. Oftentimes these people end up believing things contrary to God's word and God NEVER contradicts his word. If you have an experience or a "sign" and that sign or experience teaches you something that the Bible says the opposite, your sign or experience is not from God.

The point is, we have too many people that want God to prove himself to them, But God already has done that in the word of God, the word of God is full of fulfilled prophecies and the Bible tells you everything you need to know. When kids in my Jr. Church ask me about off topic random stuff such as where did Cain get his wife, I tell them that God didn't tell us, and since God didn't tell us then it's not important.

So if you need to know something, God put it in his word, and if it isn't in God's word, then you don't need to worry about it.
