Scriptural references for volunteering to be a soldier though? 

If men wouldn't volunteer, maybe they would have been better used of God?

Instead of living in extremely decaying and unhealthy lives now that are no longer able to do what the Lord intended for them...they could be healthy and, vigorously working to reach the lost that were supposed to hear the gospel? 

Maybe?
