The Need for the Holy Spirit

Acts 9:31 KJV
[31] Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, **and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost**, were multiplied.

The Lord has been bringing thoughts of the Holy Spirit to my mind lately, it's becoming apparent to me that the Holy Spirit is more than a doctrine, he is a living person, he is a reality in the Christian life. I was amazed at when Thomas told Jesus "Lord show us the Fat...her" and Jesus said "have I been so long time with you and yet has thou not known me Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father".

I can remember times if my life wondering where God was, I can remember times where I begged God to show himself to me. I can remember times telling God I just want to be with him. But it's as if the Holy Spirit said to me today:

"Jordan, have I been so long time with you and yet hast thou not known me? He that hath experienced me, hath experienced Christ and the Father."

The Holy Spirit is a great gift in the Christian life, Lord teach me to walk in the comfort of the Holy Ghost.

Thanks for giving the testimony on the reality of the Holy Spirit in your life, in the life of all of the believers, and the comfort that He gives us in our hearts.

I don't remember my born-again birthday 40+ yrs. ago, but I surely remember when I finally recognized the presence of the Holy Spirit in my "mind".... Nov. 16, 2010.

And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.  1 Kings 19:12

I do remember my born again "day" and I also remember the many days I recognized the Holy Spirit working in me with the still small voice. One of those times was when I was a teenager and was contemplating doing something I knew was wrong... the fellow-teens in my presence (some un-saved, some professing Christians) didn't seem to have a bit of conscience thought to the morals of what we had intended to do. I did... and it wasn't just the conscience objection to the morally wrong event, but it was the still small voice telling me to RUN! LEAVE! GET AWAY! I stayed a few more minutes, considering leaving, then out of the blue I threw up (before doing anything wrong). I hadn't felt the least bit queasy all day, I didn't have the flu, I didn't even know it was going to happen until it did. There have been many instances of this in my life.  The Holy Spirit does guide us if we allow.  Such things as television, music, manner of clothing, so many things, and it doesn't happen all at once, but (for me anyways) in a progressive fashion.  I don't throw up about things like I did that one time as a teen, and don't throw up about TV shows (although I might have wanted to throw a brick at the TV when I watched certain politicians spew lies), but over the years I have given up secular TV because it repulses me... and I feel sure the Holy Spirit was dealing with me in those cases, it wasn't just a morally right or wrong decision, it was a STAY AWAY FROM THIS EVIL . There have also been many instances also that instead of a tugging AWAY, I felt a tugging TO things such as Bible study and prayer. The more time I spend in the Word of God, the more I have these "tugging TO" experiences. Wish there were a way to describe (with words) exactly what I mean.  But I am sure each and every one who has obeyed this leading of the Holy Spirit will attest that you know it when it's happening, it's not just a moral conscience of what is "right" and what is "wrong" (like a little kid who would be contemplating whether to take that last cookie or not... would have been mostly a moral decision based on free will)... Oh how to describe the difference? Words fail. The bottom line is that the more we die to self, die to selfish desires and pride, and the more we attempt to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ... without making any worldly or selfish excuses, but surrender to God those vain worldly things, the more the Holy Spirit leads. It's so much MORE than a "moral compass" and can't fully be explained in human words (at least I think I'm doing a horrible job of explaining it). But what a blessing it is!!!

That is an unusual testimony sir. Not sharpshooting in any way just very curious....what was going on with you the first 35 years?

I think my great moment with the Spirit was after my wife had left me and I was miserable. I was working as a security guard in a hotel/casino in Reno on the night shift, and I was so mad, that I told God I was through, I just didn't want it anymore. (Praise God he knows our dumb moods!) After about two week from that, I was working one night, walking the halls of the hotel, (Harrah's Casino); I had been resisting the Spirit and fighting Him and trying to ignore Him, but I finally had enough and fell on the floor of the hallway and wept and begged forgiveness. It was like a giant cat with its claws stuck in me, and I'm trying to pull away from it-the more I pulled the deeper the claws and the more the pain. So I gave in and submitted myself to Him.

A weird thing, but there it is. generally my walk with God has not been a, what, dramatic thing, but that sticks out as one of the few times it was.

See the illustration on my post... I believe it "fits" 99.9% of "believers".  Any sound teaching about the Holy Spirit was considered "spooky" in Baptist churches that I attended.  However, I do perceive that there are some on this forum that really are not "believers".  This Campus Crusade for Christ "tract" came out around the late '60s, however, it "fles over the head" of most believers (sad to say). Romans 8 & Galatians 5 are for believers.

Ah, I got it thanks. The order was the issue with me. I see now that the center illustration is the end in your statement.

Thanks.  I've been doing a research on the different terms that Paul uses as synonyms for "ego" (a Greek word, btw) and they are many.  The "old man" was inherited from Adam, but originated with Satan (see: "I will" Isa 14:12-14).  The "flesh" is selfish and self-centered, this is contrary to the Holy Spirit.
