Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: Matthew 24:29.

And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26  Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Luke 21 25-26

These signs were in figurative language describing the horror that would follow the  fall of Jerusalem.  The Temple destroyed, The priesthood abolished.  Many Jews crucified and so many sold into slavery that the cost of slaves in the Roman empire plummeted.  See Duet 28.  That chapter also mentions the sky becoming dark and the heavens as brass if they rejected their God,  Read it  This is in fact similar figurative language to that often used in the OT when speaking of the judgment of nations.

In Joseph's dream Genesis 37:9-11 his family are represented symbolically by sun moon and stars.  His father recognised the symbolism in this prophetic dream.

When obedient Israel was promised bright day, blessings,

Psalm 37:5  Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. 6  And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

Isaiah 58:8 ¶  Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. 9  Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; 10  And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: 11  And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

Conversely. When disobedient they were promised dark days.  Amos 2:8-9

Similar language was used to describe the destruction on Egypt by Nebuchadnezzar. Ezekiel 30:6-18  Ezekiel 32:2-15  The destruction of Idumea'  Isaiah 34:4-10. The fall of Babylon Isaiah 13:6-31   6 ¶  Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. 7  Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man’s heart shall melt: 8  And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames. 9  Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. 10  For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. 11  And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. 12  I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. 13  Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. 14  And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into his own land. 15  Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword. 16  Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished. 17  Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. 18  Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.
19 ¶  And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
Not an end of time prophecy but fulfilled, see Daniel 5 28-31  Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. 29  Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.     30 ¶  In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. 31  And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

Similar symbolic language was used to describe the earlier fall of Jerusalem in the OT  Darkness etc.Zephaniah 1:4,15.  Isaiah 5:3:30. Jeremiah13:9.10, 16-19.  Micah 3:6,12.

None of these were literal.   Sun, moon stars being darkened, stars of heaven disolved, the heavens becoming brass, none of them referred to end times but specific judgments of God on various nations.

The tribulation of the Olivet prophecy was for a specific land, Judea.  A specific city, Jerusalem, A specific people the Jewish nation. The symbolism refers, not a short tribulation of a few years, but a complete overthrow.
