      Psalms 119:1-8                                         Sep. 5 - Oct. 2, 2019
1 ALEPH. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.
2 Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
3 They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.
4 Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.
5 O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!
6 Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.
7 I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.
8 I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
The following verse stood out to me...
5 O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!
At first glance it seemed to me this person’s soul is poured out with intense desire to have God’s direction in keeping His Word.
I made a small wood fire in our backyard for my granddaughter, Julia, since she would be staying overnight with us. My wife and Julia stayed outside at the fire for about half an hour. Then, I found myself alone to watch the fire die out on a particularly lovely evening. So I took my verse from above and began to repeat it for memorization. As I repeated the verse, I tried to contemplate the words and apply them to what I was seeing around me.
The moon and stars were out now peering through the scattered clouds above.
[Genesis 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. Genesis 1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, Genesis 1:18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.]
      Thought 1
The moon has stayed his course since the day God created him, also the stars, obeying the statutes directed by God from the first day they were created. Can you imagine God’s direction to the Moon and stars, “moon you will have a path through the sky above the earth, stars you will occupy the firmament above the moon and be clearly visible in the cloudless night sky.”
Then, the trees, grass, even the air we breathe obey the statues God gave them from the beginning. None of these creations have souls, none have hearts, none have intelligence, but they all observe God’s statutes, His instructions for their limited time on earth.
      Thought 2
What if we were like the moon, stars, trees, grass, or the other creations which have no soul? We would be directed to keep God’s statutes without choosing to keep them. This is not the image of God, there would be no dominion over other creatures, or over the earth. We would not be capable of experiencing the joy and peace of learning the love of God
Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
      Thought 3 (October 2, 2019)
Is the psalmist pleading God to force God’s statutes to become the man’s ways? No, he is speaking of his own failure in keeping God’s statutes and his desire to keep them, very much like Paul in Romans 7:14-25.
God doesn’t work through force to turn men from their ways that they would desire His statutes or desire God Himself. Men must reject (repent) put aside his own ways and voluntarily seek God and His statutes.

I have had an unexpected family emergency come up. I live in Northern California and have just got word about a double life threatening medical problem regarding my sister and her husband in Florida.

I’ll try to be short in my explanation. My sister’s husband has been going through difficult medical problems for a couple of years, resulting in five by-pass procedures. He also has Diabetes which, unfortunately he does not take seriously. He eats whatever he wants and tries to make up for it with insulin. This is a recipe for disaster. They also think he may have had a stroke at one time when he fell.

His condition has deteriorated to where he cannot function physically or mentally. He cannot walk around the house without a walker, and recently started falling. He is now in the hospital for the fifth time in as many months. His legs are like balloons and his kidneys have failed totally. He cannot concentrate on you if you talk to him and does not even respond in a normal manner. He is on some kind of breathing system and they want to tube feed him now.

My sister has her own medical problems that seem quite sever. She cannot walk very far without a walker and falls a lot and can’t get up. My brother said she is now having some kind of problem where her legs are oozing fluid. This coupled with the emotional strain of trying to deal with both her husbands’ emergencies and her own is taking its toll to the point where she can no longer make any rational decisions.

My sister that lives here in Northern California and I are responding to this emergency situation by leaving tomorrow morning for the long drive to Florida to help in any manner possible. It just seems like they need outside help from family since both of their medical situations have become life threatening. Flying is impossible on such short notice, so the only other option is to drive. I think we can be there in three days.

I write all of this to ask for prayer for both me and my family in this situation. I wrote the details in case anyone praying for us wants to be specific in prayer. Both my sister and her husband in Florida are saved and I thank the Lord for that. Now it just remains for us to be there to help in any way possible.

I think I will have limited Internet access on our trip and if possible will try to update as I can. We are planning for about two weeks away from home for both traveling and helping out when we get there.

Please pray for us.

Tears are welling up with the weight of this burden that you have, brother Jim.  Even though the tears are uncomfortable, I praise the Lord for them...for they cause it to be necessary for me to run to our dear Lord and lift the burdens up to Him.  What a wonderful and comforting thing it is to remember that "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly ABOVE all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us"!  I pray also for journey's mercies as you make the long drive there and back, and that the trip itself will be a time of blessing for you.  Constantly I refer to James 1:5, and so I will also pray for wisdom for you and the sister going with you as you help make decisions.

Thank you MC and WWMS. As an "aside" WWMS, the actual trip may be a blessing in disguise because the sister I am making the trip with is not saved. Could you say "a captive audience"?  In the past she has voiced her thoughts regarding my Christianity, in that she can see a difference between me and some other "so called" Christians she has known. For an unbeliever she was favorably impressed.

Adding now your sisters salvation on the trip to your family in Florida.  So...you have a relative in Maine as well?  Alaska, California, Florida...you need only Maine covered...and one out in Hawaii to have all your U.S. Bases covered.

I am originally from Gloucester, Mass. Does that count for having all the bases covered?

Thank you one and all for your Christian concern and especially your prayers. This is probably my last post before I leave early tomorrow morning. I can't tell you, although I am sure you all know, how much fervent prayer from Christian family is appreciated.

May God richly bless you all.

Brother Jim...even though you are on the road even now...I wanted to remind you that I'm lifting you and your family up in prayer.  Indeed, I'm praying for you as you travel and visit with your sister....that the Lord will give you all utterance as you testify to her of the Saviour!

You should be nearing your destination by now, and I truly hope your trip has been a blessed one.  I will continue to pray for wisdom for you as you begin soon to help make some decisions with your family there.  Lifting you up...

Well, this update doesn't contain much good news. I got home Tuesday night after a week in Florida. Things down there were grim at best. I'll make this short. I and the family have been through a harrowing week. My sister was much worse than we thought. She was near death when we got there and no one around her seemed to have any idea of the gravity of her situation. We were able to get emergency room medical staff involved and she is much better after a week in the hospital, although this is something that will need constant watching and attention. There is a natural diuretic that her body is producing that flushes sodium from her body. The docs are and seem to be working with this problem well, although recovery is slow. When we got there she was totally disoriented and looked to be ninety years old. To say the least she was dangerously ill.

Her husband Frank is not going to make it. He has had massive brain damage from both multiple strokes and multiple blood sugar events.
He was totally unresponsive when we got there and remained so throughout the week. His kidneys had shut down by the time we arrived and his other organs were beginning to shut down. To add to this situation he contracted pneumonia while we were there and his lungs were filling up. This is not something that will "get better" and cannot be treated by any means now available. The doctors have signed off on his case and said to the family that Frank's condition now is the best it will ever be from now on, he will only deteriorate from this point on. He will not recover from this and we worked feverishly to do the best for him that we could. He is now in Hospice and family members who are in the medical profession said yesterday before we left that they believe he will not last more than a couple of days and certainly no longer than Friday.

This was made all the more difficult since Patti needed to make life decisions for Frank and was so disoriented that she was not able to understand enough about his condition to make rational choices. After working with her a few days while her medical condition started to improve, she was then able to understand and finally make the decisions she needed to make for her husband.

This is something that I hope I never have to go through again. It was a rat race from 6 am every day of the week until late at night for seven whole days. It really drove home the necessity of having advanced directives and living wills in place so that family doesn't have to go through this kind of nightmare.

P.S. My sister and I ended up flying instead of driving. She was able to get a "next day" flight and it turned into a blessing since conditions there were a lot worse than we thought.

Thank you all for your prayers, each day presented us with new problems that we were able to resolve. It was only through God's grace and prayers for our family that we were able to accomplish what we set out to do.
