Members John81
Unfortunately, there are people who will look for "examples" in the Bible of what they can twist into hybrids. I once heard a preacher use the following as an example to prove that hybrids existed in the past; therefore, they will exist again...2 Samuel 23:20And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he slew two lionlike men of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow:See, those men were part man and part lion... As our pastor says, you can make the Bible say anything you want if you don't care about context, common sense or truth. Members Genevanpreacher
Note here plainly - there were giants. I always wondered if that was just a mention of dinosaurs that roamed the earth.
Members heartstrings
The "sons of God" in Genesis 6 included the named individuals of the previous chapter (Genesis chapter 5).. Each of them lived for hundreds of years. Noah was one of them as well. Noah's grandfather, Methuselah, was the last one to die before the flood came and He was 969 years old. Some say his great age shows the longsuffering of God. I believe that the sons of God AND their children became the "mighty men" and here's why:Along with the context and the punctuation, there is the Bible use of the words. The term "mighty man", in the word of God", is used to refer not only "mighty men of valour" (warriors) but also "mighty men of wealth" and "mighty men of power". Genesis 6 does not specify which of the three but the context could indicate ALL three and here's why: when you live 969 years and "beget sons and daughters" (genesis chapter 5)how many generations of your family would you live to see? In 700, 800, 969 years your family could grow into a mighty nation numbering in the millions during your lifetime, with you as the patriarch. Your family would be a "superpower" economically (mighty man of wealth), politically (mighty men of power) and militarily "mighty men of valour". And the whole world would know who you are. "Men of renown". Edited June 1, 2015 by heartstrings
Moderators Ukulelemike Posted June 2, 2015 Moderators Share Posted June 2, 2015 If, as I believe, ALL men, basically were giants by our reckoning today, then Noah and his family would have been giants, Noah, at least, being 600 years old already when the flood came, and his children would have carried the same genetics and were born under the same ideal conditions. After the flood, however, as conditions were greatly altered and people lived shorter lives, they tended to be smaller and smaller, but the potential was still there. So Og and goliath and the other giants evidently showed that gene as a mutation harkening back. But we also see, as today, a tendency for gigantism to be awesome at first, but detrimental as time goes by, because the atmospheric conditions are not conducive to sustain such a stature-one needs much more oxygen to sustain such a size and weight, and people like, say, Andre the Giant and Ted Cassidy, (Lurch) died quite young, while others who are tall, but thinner, tend to live longer, but have a lot of health problems, (Peter Mayhew, Richard Kiel, etc). So the potential is still within us, but it can be detrimental now. We don't know how old Og was, or Goliath and his brothers were-maybe quite young, so, like Andre, still strong and capable, but had they lived longer, they may not have been as effective as warriors. So being of the giants probably just meant they hearkened back to when we are all giants, and they were, like everyone else, just descendants of Noah and his boys. Members DaveW
Uke - speculation only here, but if "all men were giants" it would hardly be something to note.It doesn't say "men were giants" but "There were giants...". heartstrings
