The Coming Asteroid Impact in the Atlantic Ocean

Revelation 8:8-9

8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

Isaiah 2:12-16

12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

13 And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,

14 And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,

15 And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,

16 And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.

Ezekiel 38:13

13 Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

The merchants of Tarshish and their young lions are the Revived Roman Empire from Daniel and it’s colonies. These border on the Atlantic Ocean.

Where does Scripture say Tarshish and the young lions are the Revived Roman Empire and it's colonies? What Roman colonies are being referred to? In other threads discussing this it's been pointed out there are several possible locations Tarshish may be referring to, with the most likely being a port in Spain. Many historical references to young lions point to areas in the Middle East. Sheba and Dedan have reference points in the Middle East.

Many suggest this use of merchants of Tarshish is a general reference to merchantmen and merchant ship commerce in general.

Then again, some have even tried to tie this in to New York City!

Scripture clearly doesn't say an asteroid will impact the Atlantic Ocean causing devastation. While such is possible, it's also possible an asteroid could impact another body of water causing massive devastation. One also has to consider if this is referring to a worldwide situation, localized, regional? Imagine a major asteroid impact in the Mediterranean Sea which could potentially devastate areas of the Middle East, North Africa and Southern Europe. If such an impact is directed at a revived Roman Empire, an impact in the Mediterranean Sea could be especially harmful to Italy and even to Rome itself.

It's interesting, and fascinating at times, to read of the various considered understandings of these verses over the course of Christian history. What many proclaim today, is vastly different from what many previous generations of Christians understood these verses to mean.

Do you think a literal Roman empire, or one resembling the type and style of Rome?

As Daniel's legs of iron became feet and toes of iron mixed with clay, the Roman Empire change form from east and west to ten parts. The Western part and most of it colonies border on the Atlantic Ocean. The eastern part will be brought back into the empire after the battle of Gog and Magog described in Ezekiel 38 & 39.

John,

Tarshish is a tribe not a place.

Read Isaiah 23.

When Tyer was destroyed the people went back to their mother Tarshish. They went to Carthage, which had settlements in Spain, England, and the Island of Roads.  The peoples of Tarshish were taken into the Roman Empire. North and South America are both young Lions of Tarshish.

When were the Romans in North and South America?

As to Tarshish:

Tarshish is known best as the destination Jonah chose to flee instead of going to Nineveh.

MEANING OF NAME
•    The Expositor's Bible Commentary states, “Apparently ‘Tarshish’ comes from a Semitic root meaning ‘to smelt’; so there were a number of places involved in the mineral trade with this name on the Mediterranean coast.” (Jonah 1:3 The Expositor's Bible Commentary, Daniel and the Minor Prophets)
•    Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible states, “The name Tarshish may be derived from Akkadian rašašu, “to be smelted.” (“Tarshish” Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible)
•    The Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible states, “Some scholars place Tarshish in Africa, somewhere on the coast of the Red Sea, which is rich with the precious stone by the same name in Hebrew … According to this view, the designation “ships of Tarshish” refers to their cargo: “stone of Tarshish.” (“Tarshish” Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible)
•    Strong's Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary states, “Tarshiysh,  prOBably the same as OT:8658 (as the region of the stone, or the reverse)” (OT:8659 Strong's Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary) The Brown Driver & Briggs Hebrew Lexicon states, “Tarshiysh - a precious stone or a semi-precious gem; perhaps a chrysolite, a yellow jasper, or other yellow-colored stone.” (OT:8658 Brown Driver & Briggs Hebrew Lexicon)
•    The Zondervan Encyclopedia of the Bible states, “It is likely that this name (which some think means “refinery”) was applied to a variety of ports in the ancient world” (“Tarshish” The Zondervan Encyclopedia of the Bible)

The word “Tarshish” appears to indicate that it was a place for OBtaining precious stones and metals.

•    The Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible states, “It is reasonable to identify Tarshish with Tharsis in southwestern Spain, in the Guadalquivir Valley. This place, which was colonized by the Phoenicians, is well known for its metals and precious stones. It is called Tartessus in the classical sources. According to Herodotus (Hist. 4.152) it is placed “beyond the Pillars of Heracles.” (“Tarshish” Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible)

Pertaining to "ships of Tarshish:

A TYPE OF VESSEL

•    Easton’s Bible Dictionary states, “It appears that this name also is used without reference to any locality. “Ships of Tarshish” is an expression sometimes denoting simply ships intended for a long voyage (Isaiah 23:1, 14), ships of a large size (sea-going ships), whatever might be the port to which they sailed.” (“Tarshish” Easton’s Bible Dictionary)
•    The Dictionary of the Bible states, “‘Ships of Tarshish’ did not necessarily belong to or trade with Tarshish ... The name prOBably denoted specially large merchant vessels, designed for distant voyages” (“Tarshish” Dictionary of the Bible)

In Ezekiel 38 all the allies of Magog and all the allies of the Merchants of Tarshish are people. Why would you think Tarshish was a place instead of a tribe of people?

Are you now taking the view that merchants of Tarshish is referring to merchant seamen in general?

Are you suggesting there is a tribe of people with no place to live so they roam the seas as merchantmen?

It is also known as Japho.

Japho - "Beauty, a sea-port in Dan (Josh. 19:46); called Joppa (q.v.) in 2 Chr. 2:16; Ezra 3:7; Jonah 1:3; and in New Testament."

Joshua 19:46 - And Mejarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before Japho.

People and tribes were often named after places

Edited to add,

And places after people

God gave Tarshish a homeland.

Genesis 10

1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.

2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.

4 And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

Ezekiel 38

1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:

4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:

5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:

6Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.

7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.

8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.

9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.

10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:

11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,

12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

13 Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

The Phoenicians were the "merchant marine" of the Mediterranean.  If you wanted to sail the sea in O.T. times, chances are you would be on a Phoenician ship.  Also, some Phoenicians left sailing and setteled - they became known as the Philistines.  Paleo-Hebrew (which Moses used) was derived from the Phoenician alphabet/symbols, as a written language had been invented to allow trade-communication all around the Mediterranean.
