Members Miss Daisy
In my sunday school class I teach we are going thru the book of Judges and have come to Deborah as a judge. With women in the position they were to men then I have a hard time understanding how a woman was accepted by the people to be a judge. And people come to her under her palm tree? Was this like her office setting? And what was the description of a prophetesses as she was? I have a hard time understanding a woman of that time sending the men into battle in those days. Members DaveW
It is hard to reconcile with our understanding of things....... But note that Barak was the leader, and Hebrews 11 mentions only him. And the woman who dealt with Sisera was not Deborah. Barak was in fact rebuked because he refused to lead them without Deborah. Also, although she is called a prophetess, she is also noted in vs as being the wife of Lapidoth. We don't know anything about him, but the wording suggest she was under his authority. I wonder also in vs 6.... she asks a question "hath not the Lord commanded..." almost as though she is reminding him of a command already given? Just some thoughts. ... it is not a simple matter in some respects.
