We have a tree in Australia that ever since my earliest memory was called a "blackboy".

Well you can understand how that goes down in PC world.....

They now must be called "Australian Grass Tree".

What to know what my Aboriginal friends call them?

Blackboy trees...........

I call them Australian Grass Trees. ;)

And Shakespeare's version of "Three Blind Mice"?

Three rodents with defective vision
Three rodents with defective vision
See how they perambulate
See how they perambulate
The entire congregation perambulated
over to the residence of the agricultural specialist
His spouse surgically amputated their posterior extensions
with a sharp kitchen utensil
Did you ever witness in your entire existence
upon God's green Earth such things as
Three rodents with defective vision?

Kitagirl, please don't belittle those that work in the rail industry.

  Al.

I really don't care about the PC crowd.  I learned all of this garbage while teaching.  On Facebook, I have several black friends (friends from my teaching days.)  I never call them "African Americans", and I will call a black person a "Nigger", just as a call a white person "White Trash."  If the shoe fits..."   While working in the inner city school system for 18 years, black people called themselves, "Niggers."  I joined right in, and was never bothered for it.  This may sound harsh to some people, but it has never come out harsh when I call blacks that word, when needed.  A "Nigger" was a term that came out from the blacks who came from Nigeria.  My grandfather, on my mom's side called them, "Shines" b/c they were great at shining his shoes.  Was he a racist?  Absolutely not!  I was never taught racism, and won't start now.  PC is killing society.

My hubby hates the N-word (I won't even spell it out, because he has forbidden my using it) because of how some of his distant family has used it.  It's interesting to note that black people use it to address each other often, and it's a term of endearment for some.  The first time my sister-in-law called me that, it took my breath away. I really couldn't believe she would call me that. She is black, and she explained that it was a term of endearment.  I told her how my hubby felt, and why (it really was used in a horrible way by some of his distant family). She understood and has never called me that since.

I think it's interesting that politically correct speech is necessary for the masses but the elite can speak any way they want to.

That is so funny, HC b/c my husband uses the word as I use it.  I can understand where you are coming from, though.  I remember you told OB that your SIL is black.  Yes, black people do use it as a term of endearment, and I have used it in that context as well.  However, since I speak the lingo of blacks, I can get away with using it in a derogatory sense, when they call me a "cracker."  LOL  As of yet, I have had no prOBlems.

Your last statement is spot on.

Speaking of PC madness . . . . be glad you don't live in Sweden.

God bless,

Larry

Oh, yeah... Sweden has gone insane Pilgrim.  This will surely be coming to the USA.  Pat Condell always speaks out on PC madness in Sweden and Europe.  It would be wonderful if he wasn't an atheist and got saved.  I have to start praying for his salvation, again.  Thanks for posting this Larry, as it reminded me to pray for his soul.

Do white people get to use the lingo of blacks? PC aside, I think I'd avoid that, just to avoid causing offense. Anyone using the term *N...* up here (at least among white people) would be seriously socially stigmatized - as in, it's not okay.

On the other hand, using 'Indian' for Native Canadians is perfectly acceptable - mostly because we're not terrible PC in Alberta. The older generations don't find anything wrong with it, and I have to confess to inheriting that attitude - but it does change, slowly. I get a bit of a twitch when people refer to towns on the reserve as 'Indian villages' (it is a little rude to refer to a good-sized town as a village). My dad's generation, on the other hand, uses that term all the time.

Maybe the difference is that there are no real white/black issues up here; we get our information on that from history books and the media, and thus we accept the media's PC line as to what is and is not correct terminology in that area. Indian/white racism or other issues is what we deal with directly, so we have our own view and do not care for the eastern media's bias. If that makes any sense? Of course, things are getting really confused lately with the sheer number of East Indian immigrants.  Now we have to clarify what kind of Indians one is referring to. (Indians are natives, East Indians are from India - ha!) I have a feeling that will do more to change the Indian/native Canadian terminology than anything else. (I have issues with 'native Canadian', anyways. I'm a native Canadian. :frog:) And now there's a whole new area of issues! Not so much with racism - but cultural differences. Let me tell you, after growing up in rural (white) AB, with an Indian reserve next door, it feels really weird to go to the grocery store and find that, being white, you are in the minority! PrOBlem is that issues caused by cultural differences are very easily translated to being 'those people' and becoming racism.

I'm curious - in areas of the country where y'all're used to referring to native Americans as Indians, what is the popular lingo for referring to people from India?

Around here it's "rag head" as a no offense intended general reference, "diaper head" if offense is intended, and if seeking to avoid such terms they are all called Pakistani regardless of country of origin (just as all Hispanics here are called Mexicans even though they may be Guatemalan or even Castillian).

Here it is politically incorrect to call Native Americans Indians.  And so that's what I do.    When I get looks, I tell 'em I am of Indian descent, howbeit watered down a good bit, so I can call it what I want to.  heh.  When referring to those from India, I simply say Indians from India or just people from India, something like that. I have no idea what the PC term would be.  Rag or towel head wouldn't be, I'm sure.    When I lived in Oklahoma (as an older teenager), Iranians were referred to as Camel Jocks (there were a good number of Iranians attending Oklahoma University in Norman, which is where I lived).  This was right around the time period of the hostage crisis under Carter, and PC-speak was not in vogue at the time.

Don't forget 'wench'. Women don't seem to like being called that these days. Or spinster, or old maid.

B*****d doesn't go down well with people who are illegitimate.

A few others:

Hussy

Mongoloid

Half-caste

Yellow peril

Antipode

Just wanna add, I was trying to engage in hyperbole there. I wouldn't those words to describe people, and there's some on JimsHelpMeet's list I wouldn't use either, like 'spaz'.
