Republican Party Tightens Control

GOP moves to limit 2016 presidential debates after complaints of media bias, high number in 2012 season

Washington Republicans have moved to exert more control over their presidential primary debates, limiting the types and number of events in which 2016 candidates can participate, in an effort to get a firmer grip on the nominating process.

The Republican National Committee voted overwhelming Friday in favor of the change at their spring meeting in Memphis.

The 152-to-7 decision essentially allows the group to decide which events will be “sanctioned debates” -- based on their “timing, frequency and format, the media outlet and the best interests of the Republican Party.”

And any candidate who participates in a non-sanctioned debate will not be eligible to participate in ensuing sanctioned ones.

The move follows several criticisms about the 2012 debate season including that events were controlled by the mainstream media and their moderators and that the large number of events gave insurgent candidates free TV time.

Critics say the 20 debates crowded the process and pushed establishment candidate Mitt Romney too far to the right, which contributed to his loss to President OBama.

“The liberal media doesn’t deserve to be in the driver’s seat,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, according to The New York Times.

Party leaders also reportedly want to put a tighter leash on the primary season by scheduling the first four contests -- in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada -- for February so that other states can start voting in March. And they are trying to move up the national convention from late summer to June.

Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul, already a likely top contender and who is expected to get the non-establishment Tea Party vote, told The Times: “I think maybe the last time we had too many. And so I think some of the rule changes, as long as they’re toward things that will enhance the party as a whole, are not a bad idea.”

CNN’s Candy Crowley is among the moderators who upset Republicans during the 2012 debates, in part because she interrupted Romney in his second debate with OBama, saying he made an incorrect statement about the fatal terror attacks on an American outpost in Benghazi.

The RNC last year voted in favor of boycotting presidential primary debates planned by CNN and NBC if they proceeded with lengthy television features on Hillary Clinton, widely expected to be a 2016 Democratic candidate.

This will virtually end any chance for a non-establishment, Party approved candidate having any chance at all of running for president as a Republican. Previous control measures had already made it exceedingly difficult for a non-approved candidate get national media coverage via debates. These tighter controls will guarantee the silencing of those who might not walk and talk in lockstep with the Party leadership.

There will be no biblically sound Christian or constitutionally sound candidate allowed to be the Republican candidate for president.

Actually, I heard (from uber-conservatives) that this would be better for them.  There were way too many debates last running season.  And nothing was benefited from it.

I have a lot of uber-conservative friends on Facebook, HC.  They all said the same thing.

The prOBlem is that if the Party tells certain candidates they can't be a part of the sanctioned debates they are now barred from partaking in any non-sanctioned debates. This gives the Party more control over who is put forth as voters "choice" and who is kept from being able to run for president as a Republican.

If a candidate has a solid set of core beliefs he should be able to present them and defend them and relish the opportunity to do so as often as possible.

While I thought the Party was foolish for accepting some of the debates last time around, that was on the Party. The restrictions against who can't participate in the Party sanctioned debates coupled with restrictions against participating in non-sanctioned debates will greatly limit the field and virtually rule out underdog candidates.

We are already almost spoon-fed who the candidate will be and some of these new rules will bring us even closer to that.

Perhaps so. But I guarantee if Rand or Ted throw their hat in the ring, they won't be excluded. That would cause quite the uproar.

Of more concern to me is the stealth movement going on to derail the electoral college.

I agree, LuAnne.  What is a stealth movement?

Also, I love the way Rand took down Hillary for Benghazi.  OBama is in another pickle.  Although, while he might be impeached in the House, I certainly see him riding out the POTUS until 2016.  The Socialist Leaning Democrats love him too much.

By stealth movement, I mean it's under the radar.  No real reporting about it, even on the state level, so most people don't know about it.  Here's an article that explains a wee bit about what I mean. http://www.newsmax.com/Morris/morris-democrats-electoral-college/2014/04/15/id/565661/

BO should be impeached, removed and imprisoned for things he's done.  I don't believe the House will impeach him unless the Senate goes GOP as well (and the Dems are working overtime to stop that from happening....watch for BO to pass amnesty with an executive order). Clinton wore his impeachment as a badge of honor - in fact, I've had many conversations with people who believe BC was never impeached because he remained in office.  They don't understand impeachment takes place and then it moves to the Senate for removal or not.  Anyway, if the House impeached right now, the Senate would not remove...and BO would likely wear it as a badge of honor as well, making it all about race.

The Republican party is in disarray and has been for some time.  They need to get their people in line if they hope to regain control and move forward.  There are serious factions in the party right now, which leads to a crippling effect.  Some in the Republican party do not understand that compromise is party of politics.  They all put on a show, compromise, give and take, and move forward.  But now, some dig their heels in and refuse to offer any concessions.  This leads to stalemate and locks up the entire system.  Boehner has had prOBlems with it and I am sure is very frustrated.

Thanks, HC.  I should have known that b/c it is a word associated with aircraft.  Thanks for posting the article.  Of course the group is funded by Soros.  What else is new with this man.  The conservative Jews can't stand him.  He denounced Judaism a long time ago.  That is where the slang on Zionism comes from.  That would include all the liberal zionists in DC, including Henry Kissenger.

I agree 100% about Barry.  I wanted him tried for his crimes and sent to Leavenworth long ago.  That is what my son said about the House in regards to the GOP.  I wouldn't be surprised if the _resident in Chief does pass amnesty with an EO.  So true about Clinton.  The Dems that I know, have said the same thing.  They don't understand a whole lot.  That is a given.  Talking with them is like talking to the wall.  Yep!  He would use the race card.  That has been his whole goal all along.  Thankfully, there are a number of conservative blacks out there.  A couple of weeks ago Ice -T came out as a conservative.  They are so few in number, though.  They can't seem to get through to the blacks and libs in general.  BTW, are you familiar with Kevin Jackson's group, "The Blacksphere?"  He is a FB friend of mine and my hubby and I also follow his site.

candle - yes, I know Kevin.  He's a good voice for black conservatives.

As far as Dems not understanding, I have found that there is no particular party that lacks understanding.  It is a sad fact that many Americans do not understand the Constitution nor do they see how many pols are undermining it - of both main parties.

Yes, the GOP is in disarray.  But it isn't due to lack of compromise. It is because of it. Pragmatism has its place, but when one wanders from that to compromising the Constitution, the result is what is going on now.  Boehner is part of the prOBlem - he has had more than one opportunity to get things right and continues to hijack. I am hoping he didn't have an ulterior motive for appointing Trey Gowdy as lead on the Benghazi investigation (for lack of concessions, simply look at BO and the Dems...).

I thought you knew Kevin, HC.  He is a great voice for black conservatives.  I can't help but laugh the way he handles the liberal blacks that creep on his site.  He also relies on white conservatives, as well.

True.  Lacking knowledge in the Constitution is the main prOBlem.  While I learned it in the 8th grade, along with memorizing the presidents, states and state capitals, I must say that my memory has faded.  That is why I rely on you for my information.  :)

Sadly, Boehner is from my home state.  IMO, he started out with good intentions but has slipped so badly.  I also believe he is part of the prOBlem, and the libs jumped on that ASAP.
