Looking For A College

My oldest daughter is considering college with a major in English (Journalism/Editing).

Can I get some recommendations of Conservative Christian Colleges with reasonable tuition rates (less than 40K)? It would be preferable if they were east of the Mississippi.

Secular schools are out, not only because of the outward standards and conduct, but because we have learned that much of what an English Major is expected to read in these institutions is nothing less then smut and other filth.

Thanks!

Does this count?  I am sending my oldest daughter to PCC next month to begin school and know many alumni, great IFB school.

But if she really want to be a journalist, all she needs is an OBama bumper sticker, an AlGore glOBal warming video, The Communist Manifesto and a rainbow air freshener on her mirror and she'll be all set to anchor on MSNBC.

Some friends in our church are sending their two children to PCC and we considered it (especially since we use ABEKA for homeschool), but none of us are too keen on Florida, or the deep south for that matter. (No offence meant y'all!)

Yeah, but then she really wouldn't be a true journalist, she'd be more like a pulp fiction writer

She'd actually like to focus skill more along the editor lines. She already does proof reading for various amateur writers. For instance she proof read the book "Set Free" for a friend of ours and is credited in the book.

I hesitate to post this, but I'm gonna throw it out there.  Apparently, you're looking for a liberal arts college as opposed to a college that specializes in ministry; therefore, I don't think there's many to choose from if you're looking for a truly fundamental liberal arts college. Pensacola and BOB Jones are prOBably the most recognized.

There is a college in Virginia that has caught my attention as a very slight possibility for our daughter. From what I've seen and heard, it's a really good college for those seeking a liberal arts degree (yes, they have a Journalism major), and though they accept students from Christian and public schools, they actually seem to cater to homeschooled students.

The college is Patrick Henry College, and like BOB Jones, they are non-denominational though. I've read over all of their "Statements", and I pretty much like what I read for the most part, though there were a few things that I didn't agree with 100%.  However, it's a liberal arts college...not a Bible college.

One major drawback though is the cost you mentioned...it will cost around the max of what you posted...though they do offer financial aid. Not sure how that works since they are a private Christian college, but they offer it.

Here's the link if you're interested...https://www.phc.edu/

Thanks. I have looked at Patrick Henry and you are right, the cost is on the edge. We did look at various Bible Colleges, but none offer an English Degree of any kind. We did find that even with most Bible colleges you still end up having to spit out some bones.

wow! $40K for an English degree! how about an online degree? kids don't have to go away to school anymore. And, by the way, Pensacola is NOT the deep south you got to go a little more north than the right on the coast! (there's always a few nuts anywhere though) in the north, east, west, and south. people are all the same, I've lived all over the country, trust me on this. Now city slickers, they're the crazy ones I think!

On thing I forgot to add about PCC, the costs.

You can pay her way for about $4400 a year (I remember seeing that on a sign and brochure last month while there).

Or she can pay her own way and leave debt free in 5 years.  This is the path that my daughter is taking.

That's about 1/2 of the now liberal BOB Jones college and many tens of thousands less than those poor saps pay to send their kids off to be turned into liberal rOBots at a secular school.

We tried the online thing for a short time through College Plus, but much of that was strictly reading with no video support. She didn't do to well with that. She did, however, excel when using the ABEKA DVD curriculum for high school. The best environment for her to learn seems to be a blend of actual teacher instruction and then reading to enhance and reinforce.

It's not the people down south, as you say, there are nuts everywhere. We can't stand the heat and humidity. I could never understand how someone could just be sitting under a shade tree with sweat dripping off their body and say "Ain't this great weather?!" No, it's not! When I was living in Virginia Beach I asked a guy about that and he said, "Well, that's why you got air conditionin'". "Oh", I said, "I get it, y'all brag about the sunny weather you get down here, and then you spend it all indoors because it's too hot to go outside!" That's crazy.

You know, when it's cold, I can dress warm. When it's hot, you can only undress so much and it's still hot...., and then there is the decency issue...

BOB Jones is out. They don't review as well as some of the other schools I've seen and they are a bit steep. PCC is definitely still in the running, but that Florida thing is really a hindrance; more for my daughter then for me. She doesn't like the heat either and she wants to be a little closer to home. We do have a son near Bristol Tennessee and other family near Harrisonburg, VA, which may make colleges in that area more attractive. PrOBlem is...finding a good one.

Please keep the recommendations coming.

I am shocked too, Miss Daisy.  I thought this was only the secular colleges.

I'm not all that surprised.

First, most of these are private colleges so get little to no state funding.

Second, have you heard most High School graduates speak these days? College English Departments pretty much have to start from scratch.

That is true, 282.  I wasn't thinking in those lines when I posted.

Yep.  It is a shame.  My son was at Ohio State University for three years.  He was very lonely and really frustrated with O.S.U.  He was home every other weekend.  He transferred to Cleveland State University.  He just finished his finals for the Spring semester yesterday.  He will finish up in the Summer.  His unsaved dad pays for his tuition, otherwise I would have sent him to a Christian college.  I had to give up b/c his dad insisted.  An ongoing thing with the man.  *sigh*  Anyhow, I am very thankful that he went to a wonderful high school in the State of OH.  It has always been number one or two in the state.  Sadly, that is not the norm.  I believe it is also the internet (Facebook for example) that poisons our children and adults with bad grammar, spelling and sentence structure.

Well Grove City is out. Miss Daisy thought $40K was a bit much, Grove City charges over $100K!

Whoooah!  Back when I was looking for colleges in 1981, Grove City was on the list.  I know it didn't cost anywhere near that.  My how things have changed.

Here's another suggestion: http://www.hillsdale.edu/home

Here's the course catalog:   http://www.hillsdale.edu/file/academics/departments/registrar/2013-14-College-Catalog.pdf

You'll have to scroll down quite a bit to get to the journalism section (page 184 on my computer). Their mission statement is:  "The Herbert H. Dow II Program in American Journalism is devoted to "the restoration of ethical, high-minded journalism standards, and to the reformation of our cultural, political, and social practices. Through academic challenge and practical application, the Program seeks to educate students to become defenders of traditional values [meaning Judeo/Chistian], passing on to posterity the blessing of our American heritage and the legacy of First Principles intended by our Founding Fathers."

I'll guarantee you won't find a more conservative school than Hillsdale.  It is a private school.  A total year costs around $31, 890. The cost breakdown is here: http://www.hillsdale.edu/aid/tuition. There is financial aid available: http://www.hillsdale.edu/aid    http://www.hillsdale.edu/aid/scholarships          http://www.hillsdale.edu/aid/apply     http://www.hillsdale.edu/aid/student-employment

Our church has sent folks up there from time to time for various classes they offer on the Constitution.  I myself have taken some of their online courses.

The only bad thing is that it is in Michigan (heheheh - sorry, had to say that. My hubby is a Buckeye).

Unfortunately their price isn't conservative. $128K for a 4 year degree is well beyond the scope of this one income family.
