From the Christian Institute (UK) Posted for informational purposes to show the danger that children are in in our computer-driven society today and as a reminder to parents to protect their children from pornography and sexual abuse. At least 200,000 under 16-year-olds saw internet porn in a single month last year, the online video watchdog […]

It seems almost anything can lead to porn online. The other day I was doing a search for information on a doctor. I put the doctors name in (an Indian name) and one brief blip popped up about her while a whole host of filth showed up.

Without even looking for such, there it is.

This is among the reasons I've never allowed my children to have unrestricted access to a computer, nor do they have smart phones.

An online filter would solve most of your prOBlems with porn. We used Covenant Eyes for many years but Covenant Eyes has 2 major flaws: it won't filter https (secure) sites and it won't block Google Images (which is filled with porn). A few months ago we switched to K9 Web Protection and it works great. Best of all, it is free for personal use!

I would like to also add this to my reply:

I don't believe that children should ever be allowed to access the internet without strict parental control and without an online filter. I also believe that we as adults not only need an online filter but we also need online accountability.

I tried a couple of different filters some time back and was not happy with them.  I visit a lot of different news and blog sites where certain words that I don't approve of or may reference things or other sites I don't approve of.  The trouble with the filters is that if something is on the site or referenced on the site I want to go to, such as WND or VoxPopoli the filter will block the site so I just don't use filters.  No children in my house though.

God bless,

Larry

It's an easy fix too. All they would have to do is asign a .xxx to the end of the web address like our .com or .gov and then block all the .xxx sites. But you'll never get the inustry to seperate that junk that the devil's in control of.

-OR-

Make you sign in to visit the sites stating that they are keeping a record of all visitors for public records. Anyone could type in your name and see if you've visited those sites. Bring a little shame back to our Nation.

Give K9 Web Protection a try. Even us well seasoned adults need protection from the filth of this world.

I've tried these programs in the past and they always block sites like onlinebaptist.com since they would list this site as a "hate" website.

Yeah, there was an attempt to get all porn sites under the .xxx domain but it was rejected by ICANN. Maybe this will change now that America will no longer have control over domain designations.

I am using K9 Web Protection right at this very moment. OBviously onlinebaptist.com is not blocked.

I am going to say something that may not be popular but it needs to be said. I used to give all kinds of excuses for not having an online filter. About 7 years ago I finally saw how stupid I was. As far as I am concerned if you don't use an online filter then you are inviting the devil and all his satanic forces into your home. I will even go so far as to say that you are a fool. If a certain website gets blocked, so what! There are always workarounds. No filter is perfect but it is better than nothing!

I don't disagree with you in the slightest, but it must be added that anyone who thinks they can trust these to stop their kids seeing this stuff is also a fool.
Most kids interested in finding this stuff also know how to get around these filters.
Teach your kids, guard your kids, and hopefully get your kids to agree with the filter.

I agree. Years ago I made the mistake of allowing one of our older sons to have a computer in his room with internet access without an online filter. As a result, he became addicted to pornography. I take full responsibility. I was a fool then but it won't ever happen again in our household. We brought the computers out into the open but it took me a few more years after that to finally wake up to the fact that we needed to have an online filter. And yes, we need to teach and guard our children and it must be done diligently. An online filter is like a lock on the front door of your house: it keeps the bad guys out and your family stays relatively safe.

It was a different program that I used. I'm just saying that sometimes these web/search protection programs go overboard on the protection and block out good sites/searches because they get labeled as "hate" or "racist" sites.

Filters I've tried have blocked many websites, including Christian ones. Some of this has to do with certain filters using the direction of the SPLC to determine what sites should be blocked. Christian, conservative, historical and other cites are blocked more strictly than things dealing with porn or immodesty.

That recent encounter I mentioned above is the first time such has happened to me in years. My internet use is limited to cites I've bookmarked and most search engines I won't use. Since I established new protocols for internet use, that search for the doctor is the first time some filth has shown up; which was easy to notice and once click made it disappear.

The major prOBlem is the ads, which seem to be almost everywhere now, which so often feature immodestly dressed women, and men so there is danger for the ladies in this too. Unfortunately, it's also necessary to be careful with Fox News since they seem to look for any excuse to feature immodestly dressed women both on TV and online. I specifically avoided Fox News during spring break since several of their show advertised in advance they were doing "special reporting" on things related to Spring Break in Florida. In other words, they would have stories featuring plenty of college age men and women on beaches not wearing much.

With our children I've always had a no unrestricted access to TV or computers. No smart phones. Only a few certain stations allowed on the radio. These rules are not put forth simply as "DO NOT!", but have always been established with plenty of explanation, training and instruction. In this way,

The hardest part these days is the fact just about all the other parents allow their children to have full TV, internet and smart phone access. That means having to be very careful who, when and where to allow our son (only one left at home) to go or spend time with.
