(CNN) -- A Kentucky pastor who starred in a reality show about snake-handling in church has died -- of a snakebite.

Jamie Coots died Saturday evening after refusing to be treated, Middleborough police said.

On "Snake Salvation," the ardent Pentecostal believer said that he believed that a passage in the Bible suggests poisonous snakebites will not harm believers as long as they are anointed by God. The practice is illegal in most states, but still goes on, primarily in the rural South.

Coots was a third-generation "serpent handler" and aspired to one day pass the practice and his church, Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name, on to his adult son, Little Cody.

He must have lost his anointing

And I would guess he passed on the church to his son after all.

Yes Salyan, which really addresses the point. Paul didn't purposefully pick up a snake and handle it. The snake bit him, he shook it into the fire and the snake died. God protected Paul from the snakes venom

God can protect His people from snakes and poison but Scripture is clear that we are not to test the Lord in any manner and Scripture doesn't say Christians are to purposefully to subject themselves to these things in order to prove their faith or show God's protection.

Snake handlers ere on many levels with this practice.

Worse, after watching parts of several episodes of the program back when it first came on, it became clear they teach a works based salvation that one can lose at any time.

Thus we have lost worldly christians acting in a manner contrary to Scripture and performing acts which could lead them directly to an eternity in hell.

Hold up a minute folks. I thought you folks believed in miracles/signs/wonder these days. Mark 16: 15-18 is pretty clear and taking up serpents is part of the Great Commission in this passage.

This gentlemen believed with far greater faith than most IFBs believe. He actually blended the Word like most IFBs do. He believed the Lord's promise to the Apostles and by faith thought it was for him today just like most IFBs do but in a far more conservative way.

Weren't some of the same folks poking fun at this overtly charismatic guy just recently arguing that a girl who survived a parachute streamer was a miracle?

This poor soul didn't die because he was tempting the Lord, he died because he failed to rightly divide His Word.

My nephew, who is a saved young man, was bitten by a cobra in his foot as he walked home one night, he kicked off and ran home.  he had two holes from the fangs that turned black at the sight.  We all prayed for him and took him to the hospital.  there was nothing they could do because they don't keep snake anti-venom because it is too costly and must be kept refrigerated and in that place the power goes out all the time.

Nothing happened to him his foot didn't even swell only the bite turned black and later as it healed the spots fell off.

There could be quite a reasonable exlanation for that.  The cobra may have used its venom recently on a rat or some other animal, and its poison was depleted, Perhaps it was old and didn't produce much venom?

Some snakes can choose whether to inject or just bite.
(Not sure if all can?)

Like a cat that can give you a gentle bite if it wants you to stop, I see no reason why these snakes, being used to being handled, couldn't give a little bite to warn.

Curious, what country was your nephew in?
