I have a feeling the guy that sticks the brush in the paint is on the other side of elephant guiding the trunk. You can see where he stands and if his hand was up on the other side of trunk he could guide it without us seeing it otherwise he would be standing in front of elephant.

Maybe, but then again, since I worked with elephants for four years back in the 70's, I know they can be taught to do amazing things on command. 

Simple words could be cues as to what to paint and where.

Lookat the elephant at the end of this short clip. His handler is nowhere near his trunk.
