Daniel & Revelation - the indepth Study thread, bring your Bibles please.

Why are these two books important?  Why are they to be read together?

When Jesus was asked:

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? Matthew 24:3

Jesus said:

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. Matthew 24:4

...

When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand: )Matthew 24:15

But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains: Mark 13:14

Notice what some of Peter's last words were concerning the Coming of Christ Jesus:

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 2 Peter 1:19

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 2 Peter 1:20

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:21

Therefore, as it is written,

"...In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established."

And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 1 Corinthians 14:31

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. John 16:13

For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: Isaiah 28:10

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20

God hath told us how we may know that He is the True God and not as all the other 'gods' [which are not God at all]:

Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Isaiah 46:9

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: Isaiah 46:10

For Jesus hath said:

Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am. John 13:19

Read this Chapter upon your own, prayerfully, asking God for wisdom and understanding, and that as we study, we will follow God in what we learn from His word.

Then let us begin studying it together:

Dan 1:1  In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

Dan 1:2  And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

Dan 1:3  And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring [certain] of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;

Dan 1:4  Children in whom [was] no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as [had] ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

Dan 1:5  And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

Dan 1:6  Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

Dan 1:7  Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel [the name] of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

Dan 1:8  But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Dan 1:9  Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

Dan 1:10  And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which [are] of your sort? then shall ye make [me] endanger my head to the king.

Dan 1:11  Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

Dan 1:12  Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

Dan 1:13  Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

Dan 1:14  So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

Dan 1:15  And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

Dan 1:16  Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

Dan 1:17  As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

Dan 1:18  Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

Dan 1:19  And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

Dan 1:20  And in all matters of wisdom [and] understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians [and] astrologers that [were] in all his realm.

Dan 1:21  And Daniel continued [even] unto the first year of king Cyrus.

Thank you very much for the reference, as it will come in use later in the book of Daniel, when we come to the transitions of Kingdoms, but at this point in the study, Cyrus is merely being mentioned as one of the persons given in Daniel 1.  Also please consider the use of the brackets.  :)

Also looking at Esther 1:19, we may see that this was not until Xerxes I [who was the "Ahasuerus" of Esther, "which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:" Esther 1:1]  Therefore since the Medes came before, and Cyrus among them, he taking the place of Darius the Mede, the reference to Cyrus as being the King of [Medo-] Persia is more chronologically correct for Daniel 1, since Daniel 1 only briefly mentions Cyrus.  Also the historical reference to Cyrus the [Medo-] Persian, is also due to his blood line, himself being of Medo-Persian descent, and is also given in other historical references, such as:

"Cyrus was the son of Persian and Median parents. His father was Cambyses, an Anshan (Persian) king who was the son of another Cyrus, and descended from Anshan's great king Teispes/Chishpish, descended from the eponymous Achaemenes; his mother, Mandane, daughter of the last Median king, Astyages (Arshtivaiga 'lance-hurler' aka Ishtumegu) (r. c. 585-550). Anshan was a vassal kingdom of Media." - http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/persianempire/g/082610-Cyrus-The-Great.htm

There are other reasons why He was presently designated [Medo-]Persian.  Did Cyrus rule as King of Persia?  Yes, he did.  Did he also conquer and subjugate the previously stronger Median empire?  Yes , he did.  We will come to that in a bit.  However, let us go back to Daniel 1 and consider it further at this time.

About time for letter count!! O for the days when things were short, sweet and simple.

Hello.  The topic of the OP is the "...indepth Study thread".  :)  When it is said that this will be "indepth", there is no foolin' around.  Time to be serious with the Word of God, leaving no stone unturned, and to shew ourselves approved unto God.

Most do not have any idea what Daniel or Revelation are about, and hopefully this thread will appeal to both the far advanced and the just beginning, and shed great light.

The many references are given, that all may have them for easy access, use and later referencing.  The bulk of that material is provided so that the remainder of the study of Daniel 1 will be smoother, and we can get down to more specific details.  I hope that this format may appeal to you later in the study.  :)

Thank you.  It is very close, but it is still missing some key elements, like the Second Siege of Babylon, the National and then Universal Sunday Law by the joining of the Beasts, the close of probation for humanity, the 2nd Advent becomes the 3rd Advent at the end of the 1,000 years, since the Day of the Lord is the final 7th 1,000 year altogether, and also before the first Great Resurrection, the Resurrection of the Righteous since Abel, which is before/at the start of the 1,000 years, there is special resurrection of righteous and wicked to see Jesus coming, which is apart from the Great general resurrections.  Also the Investigative Judgment, can also be designated the Anti-typical Day of Atonement [Leviticus 16 & 23, etc], which is taking place now, while the Three Angels Messages are going forward [Revelation 14:6-7].

However, let us just consider Daniel 1 at the moment.

Hard to keep coming when you don't know where you're going. And its hard to go; if you can't see the way.

We are going through Daniel 1 at the moment.  Then we will go through Daniel 2, and then 3, and then 4, and so on... and then after Daniel come to Revelation 1, and then 2 and then 3 and then 4 and so on...

Daniel 1

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. Daniel 1:1

Let us begin by asking a few basic questions of the text:

Why was Nebuchadnezzar [iI] king of Babylon besieging Jerusalem?

Who allowed this to happen and why?

How did Jehoiakim come to reign upon the Throne of the Southern Kingdom of Judah?

Were there any prophecies in the OT which had already been given and already foretold these events?

However, in order to answer those questions, we need to go back into the past and see what brought these events on.

God had long ago, before this moment in Daniel 1, warned the people Israel [Leviticus 26:14-39; Deuteronomy 28:14-68], and in many times after [Joshua, Isaiah, Jeremiah, etc], that if they would go astray, cease from their love towards God, and go after other gods [which are no gods, but are dumb idols and devils; Galatians 4:8] and not obey the voice of the Lord, to keep His Commandments, that they would receive judgment upon themselves [isaiah 5:13; Hosea 4:6-10].

God had even foretold such judgments [even in the days of Isaiah and Hezekiah; Isaiah 38:1-5, 39:1-7; 2 Chronicles 32:31-33], even because of the sins of the Kings [2 Kings 23:34-37] and also of the sins of King Manasseh [2 Kings 24:1-7], and now the Babylonian judgment had come from God.

The LORD God had said through Moses at the time of Israel's [the peoples] gathering unto Him at Mt. Sinai:

Exodus 19:3-8, etc

Moses goes up as Mediator to speak upon the behalf of Israel to God:

God then speaks unto Moses and declares unto Moses what Moses shall say unto them, he [Moses] being the Mediator, the go between for the making of a Covenant:

"And Moses went up unto God, ..." Exodus 19:3;p

God gives evidence of His power to be able to perform His side of the covenant He is about to make with Israel:

"... and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;" Exodus 19:3;p

God then speaks what Israel is to do in their side of the covenant agreement:

"Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and [how] I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself." Exodus 19:4

"Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth [is] mine:" Exodus 19:5

What words? The words given in Exodus 19:4-6.

"And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These [are] the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel." Exodus 19:6

God said [basically], If they obey the voice of the LORD, then He will fulfill His promises to them and make them a "peculiar [purchased] people" unto Himself.

Moses, as Mediator between God and Israel, then takes those words unto the Leaders , the Elders, of Israel, the ones with the power of the covenant making:

Then the people all answer together, in their half of the covenant agreement,

"And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him." Exodus 19:7

Therefore, God said, "If...then..."

The peoples Israel said, "All that the LORD hath spoken [past tense] we will do."

Notice, that they said that they would keep their half of their covenant agreement with God, and without any assistance from God. They said, "We will do." But did they? Obviously not, and not even for very long... golden calf incident.

However, Moses, again as Mediator, takes the "promise" of the people Israel, to fulfill their side of the covenant agreement, back unto God.

"And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. ..." Exodus 19:8

"... And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD. " Exodus 19:8

Then, later on, after the [old] covenant agreement was made between the LORD God and Israel [the peoples], it was later ratified with blood in Exodus 24.  Then after all this, the LORD God gave Moses further instructions in righteousness for the peoples:

Leviticus 25:1-55 & Leviticus 26:1-46

And the LORD spake unto Moses in mount Sinai, saying, Leviticus 25:1

“Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, ...” Leviticus 25:2;p

The LORD God, then began to give His instruction concerning what Israel was to do, once they were entered into the Promised Land of Canaan, and that if the voice of the LORD was followed as commanded, then they would all dwell in the land in safety:

“... When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD.” Leviticus 25:2;p

...

Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety. Leviticus 25:18

And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety. Leviticus 25:19

...

I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, [and] to be your God. Leviticus 25:38

...

For unto me the children of Israel [are] servants; they [are] my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I [am] the LORD your God. Leviticus 25:55

...

Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I [am] the LORD. Leviticus 26:2

If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; Leviticus 26:3

Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. Leviticus 26:4

And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. Leviticus 26:5

And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make [you] afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. Leviticus 26:6

And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. Leviticus 26:7

And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. Leviticus 26:8

For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you. Leviticus 26:9

And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new. Leviticus 26:10

And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. Leviticus 26:11

And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. Leviticus 26:12

I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright. Leviticus 26:13

Then the LORD God revealed that if Israel did not keep to their covenant promise, that His protection would be removed and He would allow and send the punishments:

But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; Leviticus 26:14

And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, [but] that ye break my covenant: Leviticus 26:15

I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. Leviticus 26:16

And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. Leviticus 26:17

And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. Leviticus 26:18

And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: Leviticus 26:19

And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits. Leviticus 26:20

And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins. Leviticus 26:21

I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your [high] ways shall be desolate. Leviticus 26:22

And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; Leviticus 26:23

Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. Leviticus 26:24

And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. Leviticus 26:25

[And] when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver [you] your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied. Leviticus 26:26

And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me; Leviticus 26:27

Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. Leviticus 26:28

And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. Leviticus 26:29

And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. Leviticus 26:30

And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours. Leviticus 26:31

And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it. Leviticus 26:32

And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste. Leviticus 26:33

Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye [be] in your enemies' land; [even] then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths. Leviticus 26:34

As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it. Leviticus 26:35

And upon them that are left [alive] of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. Leviticus 26:36

And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies. Leviticus 26:37

And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. Leviticus 26:38

And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies' lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them. Leviticus 26:39

If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me; Leviticus 26:40

And [that] I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: Leviticus 26:41

Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. Leviticus 26:42

The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes. Leviticus 26:43

And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I [am] the LORD their God. Leviticus 26:44

But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I [am] the LORD. Leviticus 26:45

These [are] the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses. Leviticus 26:46

We see even further in Deuteronomy 28:1-68, the blessings of obedience unto God and especially the cursing brought about through disobedience, doubt, transgression, iniquity and sin:

The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone. Deuteronomy 28:36

And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee. Deuteronomy 28:37

Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather [but] little in; for the locust shall consume it. Deuteronomy 28:38

Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress [them], but shalt neither drink [of] the wine, nor gather [the grapes]; for the worms shall eat them. Deuteronomy 28:39

Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy coasts, but thou shalt not anoint [thyself] with the oil; for thine olive shall cast [his fruit]. Deuteronomy 28:40

Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity. Deuteronomy 28:41

Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee: Deuteronomy 28:45

And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever. Deuteronomy 28:46

Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all [things]; Deuteronomy 28:47

Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all [things]: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee. Deuteronomy 28:48

The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, [as swift] as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; Deuteronomy 28:49

A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young: Deuteronomy 28:50

And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed: which [also] shall not leave thee [either] corn, wine, or oil, [or] the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee. Deuteronomy 28:51

And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. Deuteronomy 28:52

And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the LORD thy God hath given thee, in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee: Deuteronomy 28:53

[so that] the man [that is] tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave: Deuteronomy 28:54

So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates. Deuteronomy 28:55

Also every sickness, and every plague, which [is] not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed. Deuteronomy 28:61

And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God. Deuteronomy 28:62

And it shall come to pass, [that] as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it. Deuteronomy 28:63

And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, [even] wood and stone. Deuteronomy 28:64

And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: Deuteronomy 28:65

And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: Deuteronomy 28:66

In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. Deuteronomy 28:67

Thus, we see that Israel [the peoples] eventually left off obeying the LORD, until their sin was too great and their cup of iniquity was full.  Then other prophets were sent to warn them of the soon impending judgments, like Isaiah, Jeremiah and others:

Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because [they have] no knowledge: and their honourable men [are] famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst. Isaiah 5:13

...

And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof [is] toward the north. Jeremiah 1:13

Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land. Jeremiah 1:14

For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah. Jeremiah 1:15

And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands. Jeremiah 1:16

...

Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction. Jeremiah 4:6

...

Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth. Jeremiah 6:22

...

Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because [there is] no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. Hosea 4:1

By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. Hosea 4:2

Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. Hosea 4:3

Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people [are] as they that strive with the priest. Hosea 4:4

Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother. Hosea 4:5

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. Hosea 4:6

As they were increased, so they sinned against me: [therefore] will I change their glory into shame. Hosea 4:7

They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity. Hosea 4:8

And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings. Hosea 4:9

For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD. Hosea 4:10

Some more important back history leading up to Jehoiakim, which will be referenced again later:

In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live. Isaiah 38:1

Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, Isaiah 38:2

And said, Remember now, O LORD, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done [that which is] good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. Isaiah 38:3

Then came the word of the LORD to Isaiah, saying, Isaiah 38:4

Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years. Isaiah 38:5

...

At that time Merodachbaladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had been sick, and was recovered. Isaiah 39:1

And Hezekiah was glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not. Isaiah 39:2

Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, [even] from Babylon. Isaiah 39:3

Then said he, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All that [is] in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them. Isaiah 39:4

Then said Isaiah to Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD of hosts: Isaiah 39:5

Behold, the days come, that all that [is] in thine house, and [that] which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD. Isaiah 39:6

And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. Isaiah 39:7

...

Howbeit in [the business of] the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to enquire of the wonder that was [done] in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all [that was] in his heart. 2 Chronicles 32:31

Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they [are] written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, [and] in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 2 Chronicles 32:32

...

And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. 2 Kings 20:18

...

And Pharaohnechoh made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the room of Josiah his father, and turned his name to Jehoiakim, and took Jehoahaz away: and he came to Egypt, and died there. 2 Kings 23:34

And Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh; but he taxed the land to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh: he exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, of every one according to his taxation, to give [it] unto Pharaohnechoh. 2 Kings 23:35

Jehoiakim [was] twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah.

2 Kings 23:36

And he did [that which was] evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done. 2 Kings 23:37

...

In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years: then he turned and rebelled against him. 2 Kings 24:1

And the LORD sent against him bands of the Chaldees, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servants the prophets. 2 Kings 24:2

Surely at the commandment of the LORD came [this] upon Judah, to remove [them] out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did; 2 Kings 24:3

And also for the innocent blood that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; which the LORD would not pardon. 2 Kings 24:4

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 2 Kings 24:5

So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead. 2 Kings 24:6

And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land: for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt unto the river Euphrates all that pertained to the king of Egypt. 2 Kings 24:7

And thus, though Nebuchadnezzar [iI] took Jehoiakim, there were two more kings [Jeconiah [aka: Coniah, Jehoiachin], [Mattaniah, aka] Zedekiah] to yet Reign in Judah, before its total overthrow and destruction...

In order to really understand the Book of Daniel, in all its parts, one must read minimally, all of Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel in tandem with Daniel.

Other recommendations, include reading the Exodus up to Daniel, especially the books [i & II] of Kings, [i & II] Chronicles and a few other minor prophets.

What are we to learn from these past events?  Let us briefly consider this question and then come back to Daniel.

Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 1 Corinthians 10:11

ensamples: τύποι: tupoi: types, figures, pattern, fashion, print, image, example; see John 20:25; Acts 7:43,44, 23:25; Romans 5:14, 6:17; 1 Corinthians 10:6,11; Philippians 3:17; 1 Thessalonians 1:7; 2 Thessalonians 3:9; 1 Timothy 4:12; Titus 2:7; Hebrews 8:5; 1 Peter 5:3

All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16
