The "pastor" is a cultist leader and probably most of their "doctrines" are put forth for reasons other than actual belief. They probably aren't any more actual "Calvinists" than they are actual Baptists or "Fundamentalists", or any sort of actual biblical Christian for that matter.

Yes, it would be better for us if they would drop the Baptist name, and it would be best if they didn't call themselves Christians at all.

I would agree about the pastor being a "cultist leader."  It is sad, b/c Westboro has turned many people away from the Baptist faith.  An example of this, is a young man who was friend's with my son when my son entered public school in the 3rd grade.  This young man joined the military and married a young woman, in the military, shortly after that.  Both, he and his wife, hate Baptists b/c of Westboro.  I had been witnessing to this young man since he was in 3th grade.  Westboro has made a mockery of all Christians, b/c of their ridiculous stance on our nation's military.  A "cult leader" is a great desription of the pastor, John.  Hopefully, he isn't the next Jim Jones.

Are you talking about gluttony? Thats a sin, but yet we seem to put up with that. Matter of fact, in my old IFB church, gluttony was a punchline to a lot of jokes, God calls that sinful behavior. I know homosexuality is a favorite hobby horse with a lot of Baptist churches, but there are many sins we seem to overlook and point our fingers at gays and scream justice and we have fornicators in our own assemblies and seem to keep it on the hush hush and sweep it under the rug and claim, it's under the blood! ( that actually happened by they way)

Define gluttony

Gluttony would be along the lines of a habit of overeating.

Interesting, all gluttons are not fat or obese and all fat or obese folks are not gluttons. Which means we shouldn't be judging folks to be gluttons, or thinking they surely couldn't be gluttons, based only upon the way their bodies look.

I was a glutton in my late teens and 20s, and didn't even realize it, but I wasn't fat at all because I was so active, usually had physically demanding jobs (until later in my 20s) and exercised a lot.

At the same time, a local school teacher was very obese, but was not a glutton, she had a certain thyroid disorder which brought about her obesity.

Yet most of us probably know some of those Baptist gluttons who never miss a church picnic and their big bellies beat them to the table each time they go back for more.

I find it hard not to be a glutton at Pizza Hut.

The word Glutton occurs twice in the OT, and means one who is worthless or vile, one who squanders, or is light. Nothing specifically having to do with overeating.

Twice in the NT, though both references to the same thing, so really, only once, and it means someone voracious. so, the meaning of a heavy eater is there, but not only such-it would also match with the OT meaning.

Roughly, it means someone who is wasteful, wothless and extravagant. Think Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and the like-popular for being popular and rich-I also think, in the food area, of the old image of HenryVIII eating at a big table of food, taking a bite of a turkey leg and tossing it over his shoulder to the dogs, then taking another, a bite and toss it aside. Or think the rich guy lighting his cigar with a $100.00 bill.

Thye Catholics turned the word into "fat overeater". It is a far richer term than that.

I went into this because, as a big guy who doesn't eat much, and happen to have a thyroid condition, I get irritated at the people who look at me and my size and assume I am a sinner and a glutton. These are people who will get mad if you judge them if, as a man, he has long hair, (something specifically mentioned in the Bible as shameful), or a woman dressing in a suggestive manner. Probably better than half ot eh obese people in the world are that way due to health issues, not overeating. As was mentioned before, I have known many "fit" people who ate twice what I do.

Someone sees a fat Baptist preacher at a restaurant eating, and the preacher becomes the main course. He MUSt be a glutton because, look, he's fat and eating!  Remember, even is someone IS an overeater, unlike smoking or drinking, a person MUST eat to survive. You can stop smoking, stop drinking, stop looking at porn, but you have to eat.

Sorry if it seems I got my dander up. Hope I didn't offend anyone, and this was not mentioned toward anyone specifically, just informational.

John, many athletes have a very high caloric diets due to the nature of their sport. I read somewhere that boxer Manny Pacquiao eats up to 5500 calories a day while training for fights. I wouldn't consider an athlete to be gluttons due to the fact that train at a high level and need it to keep their  performance levels up.

I read that historically/Biblically, a "glutton" was usually someone who would attend the great feasts...and they would eat and eat and eat, and then go vomit, so that they could go eat more.  Isn't there a verse about a glutton being brother to a great waster?  Yeah....it's a waste of food.

Obviously eating too much constantly is not taking care of your body, and it is a problem with self control, but we have gotten really judgmental these days against fat people when we really should be working on our own problems.  I myself can tend to judge a fat person (usually just the huge obese ones) but it is not my place to judge them or call them a glutton.  The Bible definition of gluttony is NOT "overweight".

Back to the topic.... last year through various turns of events that Bro Matt knows about, I ended up without my cake business which I had built over a period of ten years.   It was really hard, and it's still been a difficult transition...but as I watch the drama unfold with the gay weddings and the bakers....I wonder sometimes if it wasn't God getting me out of it.  Of course I made cakes for gay people as customers, but I would not have wanted my reputation to be that of a baker who does gay weddings.  PA does not have legal gay marriage yet, but NJ does, and I served many NJ customers (back before gay marriage).   I guess it is a headache I probably did not need to involve myself in.

My oldest daughter (21) is gay.  Please pray for her.  I pray for her every single day.  My heart aches for her.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

I know all sin is wrong...but some seem worse than others.

Not just food, but wine also (Prov 23:20-21) Duet 21:20; Ezekiel 16 49:15, The issue is overindulgence. One of the fruits of the spirit is temperance/self control. My point is God doesn't look kindly on it and since it is something we all struggle with, myself included, we give ourselves pass. I mentioned earlier that gays are a favorite hobby horse of many churches. We do need to warn all sinners of Gods wrath and the plan to rescue them through Jesus Christ.

I will pray for your daughter, Laura.  If you shoot me a private message, with her name, I will add her to my list of prayers.

:goodpost:

Covetousness, idolatry and revilement are three other sins that churches are almost silent about these days.

It seems the sin of homosexuality is spreading like a plague.

Laura I will absolutely pray for your daughter. It's only through the Lord that she will find deliverance.

I have a cousin that decided he was a homosexual. He moved to Florida, last I heard he was living with his "boyfriend" down there. I've not seen him in over 30 years.

A place I worked in the late 90s to early 2000s, there was a woman with marital problems who was a supervisor there. We became good friends and had a great working relationship. There was also a homosexual woman who worked there. I'm not saying this out of meanness, it's a fact that everyone recognized, that homosexual woman was a very unattractive woman with a very poor attitude. In any event, for over two years that homosexual woman worked diligently to establish a closeness with the supervisor lady. Once she had finally got that established she clearly began coming on to her and trying to convert her to homosexuality. It took about another year but sadly the woman gave in, they became "lovers" and then a "couple". She ended up leaving her husband and moving in with the homosexual woman.

The supervisor lady had three grown children by this point, probably all in their 20s by then. The first thing her oldest son said after meeting his moms homosexual "girlfriend" was, "If you were going to become a lesbian couldn't you have at least found an attractive one instead of a woman that's literally the ugliest person I've ever seen?"

None of her sons actually accepted the situation, but they did somewhat tolerate it, mostly from a distance. The woman divorced her husband and lived shacked up with the homosexual woman for many years before the homosexual woman's jealousy and controlling nature led to their split. I've not heard from the former supervisor lady since.

All that to say there seems to be homosexuals (and those with related sinful perversions) all around us these days and this seems to be effecting nearly everybody or family in some way now.

I know of folks working in places where the homosexuals flaunt their perversion, and also flaunt the fact they know they are specially protected so they do less work, cause problems for other workers, and not only get away with it, but get promoted so the business can show how tolerant and PC they are.

We need to be in much prayer.

I pray that she comes to christ and change her ways, I don't know her, but she must be a great young lady. Most or many of our family have some that are gay. Some are quiet and many have came out. Their sins can be forgiven, just like ours. All sin are the same in Gods eyes, whichs He does not look at, for He is perfect. He looks at the hearts of man. Be proud of her and not of her gay ways. Some think that I hate gays, I don't, I have hope that many come to christ, like your daughter will someday.

My oldest went through it for a while-she had a marriage that went bad, through both their faults, but she got man-angry and turned to a long-time lesbian friend for succor. They reamined a 'couple' for about a year, and they separated, she bounced around with a few different girls, and now is back with a young man who is really trying to help her with some of her issues, and she seems happy. She says she wants to get married and have another child, and I am glad because she is looking at it from the right order, unlike the first time where the marriage came after.

We can raise them right, love them, give them direction, but once we let them go, they have to decide if they will follow us or themselves. Keep loving her, but never be 'accepting' of where she is, no matter how much you love her. My daughter never for a second thought I was pleased with her relationship, but she never doubted I loved her, AND the girl she was with. In fact, we were able to witness a couple times to her girlfriend, and have actually a nice relationship with her, becuase we showed her the love of Christ. And we keep hoping she'll get saved and go straight because she would make a terrific mother. (This is the lesbian girlfriend).

It seems it's becoming the "norm" these days.  I hardly watch TV anymore because you can't find a decent program that doesn't promote it somehow.  My daughter lives in FL with her g/f so I haven't had a chance to meet her but have talked to her on the phone.  I told my daughter I did not agree with their relationship and they weren't born that way but I will still be there for my daughter and be decent and respectful to her g/f but not in a way that is condoning.  The hard part is letting go and putting her in complete control of God's hands.
