11 Tim 2.15: Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

James 1.5: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

At first reading these verses seems to contradict each other. 11 Tim 2.15 tells us to study and James 1.5 tells us to ask God for wisdom.

Now we all know that the Bible does not contradict itself; therefore how do you apply these verses?

Some thoughts to ponder:

Does one need wisdom to rightly divide the word of truth?

Does wisdom give one the ability to rightly divide the word of truth?

In Timothy, Paul is talking to one man.  In James it talking to "all men".

No contradiction at all. We study for knowledge and pray for wisdom. We do both of them.

We read for knowledge.

We study for understanding.

We apply understanding to knowledge which gives us wisdom.
