Not completely destroyed. Noticed it's glory is compared to the glory of Israel, i.e. it "shall be made thin" and "lean". 

 

Damascus has been sacked a few times throughout history. The Mongolians did a good number on it. The status of the city is unknown under the Babylonians which, historically, the passage is speaking off. 

 

The passage may have some future application but I doubt that it has anything to do with what's taking place now. 

 

Daniel seems to suggest that the Antichrist comes out of Syria so what's taking place over there now could be fertile ground for his "upbringing".
