  I.  The Cry of the Lord’s Servant (Psalm 4:1-2)

  I.  The Cry of the Lord’s Servant

      A.  According to the Lord’s past help.

           Psalm 4:1a-b – “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in
           distress.”

      B.  For the Lord’s present mercy.

           Psalm 4:1c – “Have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.”

      C.  Because of the enemies’ personal attacks.

           Psalm 4:2 – “O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame?  How long will ye love vanity,
           and seek after leasing? Selah.”

 II.  The Confidence of the Lord’s Servant

      A.  Concerning the Lord’s favor for the godly.

           Psalm 4:3a – “But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself.”

      B.  Concerning the Lord’s faithfulness to himself.

           Psalm 4:3b – “The LORD will hear when I call unto him.”

      C.  To motivate a settled faith in the Lord.

           Psalm 4:4 – “Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.”

III.  The Commitment of the Lord’s Servant

      A.  To pursue righteousness before the Lord.

           Psalm 4:5a – “Offer the sacrifices of righteousness.”

      B.  To plant his trust in the Lord.

           Psalm 4:5b – “And put your trust in the LORD.”

      C.  To pray for the favor of the Lord.

           Psalm 4:6 – “There be many that say, Who will shew us any good?  LORD, lift thou up the light of thy
           countenance upon us.

IV.  The Comfort of the Lord’s Servant

      A.  Through the Lord’s gift of joy.

           Psalm 4:7 – “Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine
           increased.”

      B.  Through the Lord’s gift of peace.

           Psalm 4:8a – “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep.”

      C.  Through the Lord’s gracious protection.

           Psalm 4:8b – “For thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
