It means soon!

What is soon? Is soon a few years, a generation, a hundred years, several centuries?

Many have heard the preaching that the Lord will come soon so many times over their course of the years, and more if they have done some reading, that they now turn a deaf ear to such. Since we don't know what "soon" means, why make that such a point in witnessing to the lost?

Another point, you have said that with Israel now being a country the Lord can soon come. If it was necessary for Israel to be a country again before Christ could return that means there could have been no chance of an imminent return of Christ before 1948.

John,

The day of the Lord is soon because the nation not desired, Israel , is gathered Zephaniah 1:14-2:3 KJV

So the appearing of Christ must also be even nearer because it happens before the day of the Lord's judgment of earth.

For the church is not appointed to the wrath of the day of the Lord 1Thessalonians 5:1-11.KJV

The name, Laodicea, means, "the people's rights". This in itself speaks prophetically of the Age in which we live. This is an Age when the vast majority of individuals and groups of individuals demand "their rights". This city was one of the most politically important and financially flourishing cities in Asia Minor. The Age in which we now live is constantly feeding on Political and financial news and forecasts - the dollar is their god and Politics is their Master.
Laodicea was the seat of a great medical school. Its people were distinguished in the arts and sciences. It was often called the "metropolis" as it was the county seat, for twenty-five other cities. The Age in which we live is distinguished above and beyond all others for it's great medical schools, it's Universities, the arts, sciences and Computer technology. The prophet Daniel was surely speaking of this Age when he said "MANY shall run to and fro and Knowledge shall be increased". Daniel 12:4.

Seven SIGNS GIVEN BY JESUS TO INDICATE HIS COMING AND THE END OF THE AGE
In Matthew24:3 Jesus was asked, " Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
Jesus told his apostles to look for the following signs prior to his second coming and the end of the age.
1. FALSE PROPHETS AND CHRISTS
Matthew 24:5 "For many shalll come in my name, saying, I am Christ, and will deceive many."
Matthew 24:11 "And many false prophets will arise, and will deceive many."
In the last several years many have claimed to be the Messiah. Jim Jones and David Koresh are examples of these false christs as well as countless others who are not as newsworthy. These false prophets are a prelude to the ultimate false christ, the antichrist.
2. WARS
Matthew 24:6 " 6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.."
Rumors of wars in all areas of the world now occur frequently thanks to instant media coverage and the availability of a multitude of 24-hour news sources.
Matthew 24:7 " For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.."

More people have been killed in warfare in this century than at any other time in history. As the death toll rises in the Middle East, more and more countries work feverishly to develop devastating weapons of mass destruction. Add to that the expanding threat of terrorism and unpredictable dictators such as Saddam Hussein, and the potential for the outbreak of war exists in nations, kingdoms and places across the globe.
3. FAMINES
A large portion of the worlds 5 billion people suffers from a shortage of food.
4. EARTHQUAKES
The number and intensity of earthquakes this century is at a level higher than any other time in history. A staggering number of seismic events occur around the world daily.

5. TRIBULATIONS
Matthew 24:8-9 " All these are the beginning of sorrows.9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake."

Christians are under attack throughout the world today. In the United States Christians still enjoy freedom to worship God without suffering much more than ridicule, hatred, or discrimination at work and school. However in many other countries such as China, Sudan, Africa, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Russia, and many Muslim nations, Christian suffer much greater persecution and, often times, death for their faith. During the tribulation this suffering will be worldwide and will continue even to the point of martyrdom. These first 5 signs will increase in intensity and severity as the tribulation approaches, much like the birth pangs or contractions of a pregnant woman worsen as the delivery time approaches.
6. THE GOSPEL WILL BE PREACHED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
Matthew 24:14 " And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come."
This prophecy has already been fulfilled through television, radio, missionaries, the translation of the Bible into many languages, and the internet. People all over the world now hear the message of Christ from missionaries who have the means to travel the globe, and via technology that allows us to communicate with people on the other side of the world right from our own homes, churches and offices.
7. 1. The human race would have the ability to exterminate itself
In Matthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
See All..., describing world conditions prior to His second coming, Jesus said that "if that time of troubles were not cut short, no living thing could survive; but for the sake of God's chosen it will be cut short" shows us that if Jesus Christ does not intervene in world affairs, the human race will be faced with extinction. It's crucial to note that humanity has had the capability for self-annihilation for only a little more than 50 years, since both the United States and the Soviet Union developed and stockpiled hydrogen bombs and the world had to learn to live with "mutually assured destruction."
The main message that Jesus Christ brought was of the coming Kingdom of God. This is described as "the Gospel" (Mark 1:14Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. Gospel means "good news." While some of the prophecies concerning events prior to the establishment of the Kingdom can seem negative, we should always keep in mind that the central focus of Bible prophecy is the good news (gospel) of the coming Kingdom of God.
TWO CHARACTERISTICS OF THE END OF THE AGE FROM THE APOSTLE PAUL
1. GODLESSNESS IN THE LAST DAYS
II Timothy 3:1-5,7 " This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."

For anyone who has watched television, read a newspaper, lost a retirement to corporate greed and corruption, or just walked outside their front door, it is obvious this prophecy has been fulfilled by our generation. Our leaders are often corrupt; our cities are filled with crime, brutality, and neon signs proclaiming our sinful, godless nature. The New Age Movement brings in increasing numbers of mystics who claim to be the enlightened ones. They are some of the most educated and influential people in our societies, and yet the most lacking in real truth.
2. APOSTASY (FALLING AWAY FROM THE FAITH)
I Timothy 4:1-3 " Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
Churches today are becoming more and more ecumenical, embracing the New Age interfaith agenda, and denying Christ as the only way to salvation. Giving in to the politically correct media and a corrupt society, they have embraced homosexuality as an acceptable alternate lifestyle and preach tolerance and compromise in place of God's truth for the salvation of the world. The environmentalist movement within the New Age movement lures them into a worship of mother earth, belief in past lives, reincarnation, and Karma while demonizing all those who would eat the meat God gave us as nourishment for our bodies.
ELEVEN FULFILLMENTS OF BIBLE PROPHECY REQUIRED FOR THE END OF THE AGE
1. EXISTENCE OF A 200,000,000 MAN ARMY IN THE EAST
Revelation 9:16

An army of that size had never existed until China's army reached that number in the 1960's.
2. REDEVELOPMENT OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (EUROPEAN COMMUNITY)
Daniel 2:32-33
Daniel 2:40-43

The fourth kingdom of iron is the Roman empire according to Daniel's interpretation of King Nebuchadnezzar's dream. The two legs are the division of the Roman empire into an eastern portion called the Byzantine empire which ended in the 1400's and a western portion based in Rome which ended in the 400's. The nations of Europe since the Roman empire dissolved have never adhered or formed one empire but continue as separate nations, however, the European Union now has 15 Member States and is preparing for the accession of 13 eastern and southern European countries.
3. RETURN OF THE ONE PURE LANGUAGE, HEBREW, TO ISRAEL
Zephaniah 3:9 " For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent.."

Prior to the restoration of Israel in 1948, Hebrew was a dead language. Now Hebrew is spoken throughout Israel.
4. REBUILDING OF THE TEMPLE, RESTORATION OF TEMPLE WORSHIP AND ANIMAL SACRIFICES IN JERUSALEM
Revelation 11:2
5. APPEARANCE OF THE RED HEIFER AFTER 2000 YEARS
Numbers 19:2-7
6. INCREASE IN KNOWLEDGE AND TRAVEL
Daniel 12:4 " But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased."

Billy Graham was quoted as saying, "ninety percent of all the engineers and scientists who have ever lived are alive today." Air travel, space travel, DNA research and human cloning are all examples of the rapid increase in knowledge in our generation.
7. RETURN OF THE ETHIOPIAN JEWS TO ISRAEL
Zephaniah 3:10-11

In 1984, Operation Moses saw the airlift of 15,000 Jews who had already fled to refugee camps in Sudan to escape starvation. In 1991, Operation Solomon flew 20,000 Jews to Israel from Ethiopia itself. A further airlift began in June of 1999, aimed at transporting the last 3,000 members of the Quara Jewish community from northeastern Ethiopia to Israel.
8. THE RISE OF RUSSIA
Ezekiel 38:2,4,8 "Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him. "

In order for some end time events to occur Russia will have to be a strong nation with a strong military.
9. RETURN OF RUSSIAN JEWS TO ISRAEL
Jeremiah 23:7-8

In the 1970's and 1980's there was a mass exodus of Russian Jews out of Communist Russia. In 1999 the Associated Press reported a dramatic increase in the number of Jewish immigrants from Russia, bringing the largest number of Russian Jews to Israel since the early 1990's.
10. TECHNOLOGY FOR THE MARK OF THE BEAST
Revelation 13:16-17 " And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name."

On May 10, three members of a family in Florida became the first people to receive the biochip implant. Each device, made of silicon and called a VeriChip, is a small radio transmitter about the size of a piece of rice that is injected under a person's skin. It transmits a unique personal ID number whenever it is within a few feet of a special receiver unit. VeriChip's maker describes it as "a miniaturized, implantable, radio frequency identification device (RFID) that can be used in a variety of security, emergency and healthcare applications."

Is the biochip the mark of the beast to be used by the antichrist? We can't really know. What is significant is that people are being softened to the idea of a mark or an implant as a means of maintaining security, providing medical information, and regulating a more interdependent world. As attitudes change, fears subside, and people are convinced of the need for such a mark, the true mark of the beast will be easily introduced to the world by the antichrist.
11. PLANS FOR THE ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT
The United Nations, World Trade Organization, International Criminal Court, UN peacekeeping/police force, numerous UN NGO's, and other agencies are preliminary steps to the formation of a one world government. We now have the communications technology, transportation, and the pro-globalization media necessary to usher in the one world government headed by the antichrist. The increasing terrorist threat and the middle east conflict will only speed up the formation of this governing body as fear and promises of better security make more people willing to give up their national sovereignty for global governance.
12. INSTANT COMMUNICATION AROUND THE WORLD
Revelation 11:3, 7-10 "And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophecy for twelve hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves."

Television, internet and the 24-hour news networks make it possible for people around the world to see the dead prophets and rejoice at their deaths.
Luke 21

25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;
30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.
31 So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.
32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

I believe we are "this generation." How long is a generation? If we are not to live older than 120, I would say a gerneration is less than 120 years. I know satan has used man to predict the end times so we will be like the 10 virgins and fall asleep, but I believe soon is less than 50 years.

Exactly how long is a generation? I read in Matthew that from Abraham to David was 14 generations and David to the carrying away was 14 and from then to Christ was 14. From Adam to Abraham, I count 19. So this adds up to 61. If the world is 6000 years old, then from Adam to Christ would be 4000 years?? So 4000 divided by 61 is 65.5 years. Is this a generation? So if we add that to 1948 when Israel became a nation that would be 2013. Wow, Christ is coming back next year? How great is that!!??

Ok, back to reality. I don't quite believe the countdown started in 1948 because some other things had to happen. But I do believe it did start. I do believe enough "signs" are there to feel it did start. But what is a generation?

Anyway, I didn't type that big long posting. I was copying and pasting for a sermon tomorrow so I could have some ideas that point to it happening soon. Why? Well, last week I talked about Christ's first coming, of course being the Christmas season, so I wanted to talk about the second coming. with the supposed Doomsday on the 21st. Also, I have a lady at church that has made the statement that we don't know when Christ is returning. It might be 1000 years. She was so "oh well" about it. I don't think this is the right attitude. No matter when, we are to be watching. So I got this stuff together so I hope to get across to her that it could happen at any moment. She needs to realize it is past time to start telling her family about Christ.

A generation is considered to be 40 years I believe, the the words 32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled, can only refer to the generation that Jesus was speaking to. The same as similar words in Mt 23:36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

Looking at verses in the scripture from Genesis onwards the words this generation always refer to the current generation then living, not some other generation.

Ge 7:1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
Ps 12:7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
Ps 71:18 Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.
Ps 95:10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:
Mt 11:16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
Mt 12:41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
Mt 12:42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
Mt 23:36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
Mr 8:12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign given unto this generation.
Lu 7:31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
Lu 11:30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
Lu 11:31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
Lu 11:32 The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

I cannot see how the verses in Matt 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21 can mean any different without completely corrupting the scripture in order to make it fit your views.

On the other hand when the no sign would be given of "that day" everything will be going on as normal:
Immediately after telling the disciples about the things whiah would come on their generation, Jesus said

Matt 24: 36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

The But shows that he was changing the subject and moving from answering the first question,Tell us, when shall these things be? to the second, and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world.

Note that there were two separate questions and they were both answered.

But also note that before giving either answer, Jesus warned the disciples,

4 ¶ And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

There are many trying to deceive the church today, sadly.

Matt 24, vss 21 and 29 - that generation alive then didn't see the worst tribulation - there has been worse since.
And the events of 29 have never been recorded on that scale either.

And while the principle of first mention is a good one, it is by no means universal.
Just because a word is used in a particular way in one place does not force that meaning upon that word universally regardless of context.

With the things specifically mentioned in the verses preceding that were to be fulfilled, I would be slow to force "this generation" into that being spoken to at that time. It comes close to making God's Word inaccurate since some of those things were not true of that generation.

It doesn't say the tribulation would be worse, but "such as", not in scale but in type.  I have posted my reasons to show that there was no tribulation such as that, before,    I am sure thet there is a reference in the OT refering to the destruction by Nebuchadnezzar, in somewat similer terms, I wish I could remember where it was, or what the actual wording is.

When something is used in the bible in one way, and the only one which is claimed to be used in another way, to support a disputed interpretation, I would be very wary.

Jesus said "All these things shall come upon this generation."    Matt 23:36   and they did.

Matt 24: 33-34  "So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the

doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

Verse 29 says things would happen afer that tribulation, so verses 33-34 refer to events before verse 29.  That tribulation was judgment on the Jews for killng their promised Messiah.

They filled up the measure of their fathers.  Matt 23:32.

" for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost "  1 Thess 2:16

Invicta,

The difference is the scale of the tribulation. In 70 AD the tribulation was on Israel. At the time of the day of the second coming of the Lord the tribulation will be world wide. All life in all the seas will die for example.

RobMac68,

A thought for your message, as John the Baptist was the voice crying in the wilderness for Jesus coming at his time, we believers are the salt and light of the world Matthew 5:13-16 and the ambassadors

2 Corinthians 5:18-21 for the reconciling the world to God now at the time of Jesus soon Appearing!
