Question 1Samuel 8:1-6

Recommended Posts

1 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old , that he made his sons judges over Israel.2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together , and came to Samuel unto Ramah,5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old , and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said , Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

I've heard many sermons on verses after this in chapter 1 Samuel chapter 8 about God telling Samuel that the people were not rejecting him (Samuel) but God. However the first verses in this chapter say Samuel is old and appointed his sons to judge Isreal and they did not walk in their Dad Samuel's footsteps. So did god want his worldly sons to rule over them? Also God judged Eli for his sons not doing right so why did God not say the same to Samuel over his sons.

one thing about Eli sons it says they knew not God. How SAD. but did Samuel's sons know God but choose to not fear God? was it more of God's will for the people to under men who perverted judgment?

Think what happened when Eli sons were corrupt and did not follow God. God raised up Samuel to judge Israel in their place. That is why the Lord said the people were rejecting him not Samuel in my opinion. Even with the people rejecting Gods plan of judges rather than kings for them God still raised up first Saul and then David for them. As far as why scripture does not specifically address God judging Samuels sons I suspect that he did judge them, just that it wasn't mentioned in scripture.

Agreed. We know that God judges all wicked, either in this life, after their death or both. The Bible doesn't record everything, if it did we would require huge warehouses just to store one Bible.
