Habakkuk 3

It is written by Habakkuk as a song, but I only know 2 allusions in hymns - "Revive thy work, O Lord" & "Sometimes a light surprises."

It is written for the medieval carol tune "Personent Hodie"

God above, we have heard
of your works in your Word,
now revive in our day
works of gracious power
in this needy hour.
In your wrath O Lord,
In your wrath O Lord,
In your wrath, yet once more,
Lord remember mercy.
2.
When God came to our land
mighty power in your hand
all your tribes marched with you,
singing out your glory
as they told the story.
Mighty shouts of praise,
Mighty shouts of praise,
Shouts of praise filled the land,
made the heathen tremble.
3.
Wondrous signs led the way;
fire by night, cloud by day,
mountain heights, depths below
could not stand before you,
nations fell before you.
So be warned, O men,
So be warned, O men,
So be warned all mankind,
God is in his temple.
4.
Nations now spurn your Laws;
all around, judgement falls,
your redeemed on you call,
keep us true & faithful;
trusting, praying, watchful.
May we watch and pray;
May we watch and pray;
Watch and pray every day,
for our Lord is coming.
5.
Evil men rule the land;
they despise your commands;
they will not give you thanks
so their crops are failing
in their hunger wailing.
Yet I will rejoice,
Yet I will rejoice,
I will joy in the Lord,
God of my salvation.

Habakkuk's prophecy is relevant to our day.

Hab 1:2 O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! [even] cry out unto thee [of] violence, and thou wilt not save!
3 Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause [me] to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence [are] before me: and there are [that] raise up strife and contention.
4 Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.
5 ¶ Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for [ I] will work a work in your days, [which] ye will not believe, though it be told [you].
6 For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, [that] bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces [that are] not theirs.

The wickedness of a once blessed land of Israel is about to be dealt with, not by revival but but coming judgment. In his day, God raised up the Chaldeans; in our day, the Muslims???? When I first heard this preached on, it was the Communists.

Did the prophets encourage the godly to mOBilise their militia?

Specific encouragement is to:
plead with God (1:12ff)
watch, warn, & live by faith (2:1-4)
to remember that the LORD [is] in his holy temple: (2:20)
to heed the warnings;
remember God's works from the past;
to pray for revival;
to rest & rejoice in the LORD, even though believers suffer with the ungodly when the land is judged;
knowing that God is the God of my salvation. (ch 3)

:amen: Excellent post!

The warning signs of God's coming judgement have been clear for decades. Exactly how and who God uses may not be clear until His wrath is actually poured out. It could come from the Chinese, Muslims, elsewhere or something entirely unexpected. It's often forgotten in our "forget yesterday, live for today" culture, but the war with Muslims has been going on for about 40 years and has been continually growing in scope.

Many Americans, including a high percentage of professing Christians, place their hope for security and survival in the American military rather than in God. How very important that you rightly pointed out what God calls us to, and it's not to build up our military or trust in our right to bear arms.
