Supposedly, police are to obey the laws just like everyone else.

I once worked in a factor a few blocks down from that cities police station. Each morning as I sat in front of the building waiting for the doors to be unlocked several police cars would come zooming down the street (a street with a speed limit of 25) doing about double the speed limit. If a traffic light would happen to change to red in their path they would flip on their police lights and keep right on going. They were racing to see who could get to the police station first to end their shift.
