Rock music and Movies

Recommended Posts

It's hard to draw the line between soft rock and some contemporary Christian music, and between CCM and some Appallachian old time Gospel favourites.

I do have my preferences, but I find it hard to be dogmatic.

Another thing to consider about movies on TV, and TV shows themselves, is that much more cussing is allowed now and words that were once forbidden are now common. Near nudity and partial nudity is also acceptable on many channels too.

In fact, I think television is largely a waste of time...

Which is why we don't watch much of it. Which is also probably why I am so shocked when I see or hear something from a TV when visiting someone. I've often asked, "when did they start showing/saying that on TV?!" Only to be told that's been on TV for several years now.
It's a far cry from the days when Matt Dillon didn't even kiss Miss Kitty on the show while today virtual strangers are shown getting physical in scenes that once would have been considered porn.

Nor do we, either. It's a great time-waster.

Just for the record, I am not trying to stir up a debate or trouble in any way. I have a very honest question that has been giving me trouble for quite some time. I have someone very close to me who thinks that listening to rock music is okay. It is a touchy subject around us because I do not like listening to it, especially for the sake of just listening to it. I have pretty strong convictions about listening to it. This person maintains that the songs are clean, and they do not listen to songs that are dirty. I have read some of the lyrics to some of the songs, and they are clean. I didn't see anything wrong with the words, even in the world view.

Now I made the argument to this person that a lot of the singers were on drugs and that pretty much all of the ones they listen to have other songs that are filthy. They may not listen to those particular songs, but they do have filthy songs none the less. One band even has a song called Jesus was an alien.

Anyways, after making this argument, this person informed me that many of the movies I watch have actors that do not live very appropriate lives. An example of this would be Lord of the Rings. One of the actors in the movie is gay. They also informed me that the movies and shows on T.V. have secular songs throughout them. I had never really noticed this because I get so invovled with the show that I am not really listening to the music and usually it is a softer type of rock too and isn't very noticable.

I guess I am wondering if I do have a double standard, or am I looking at this from the wrong perspective?

This is a good question (if I have a double standard, or if I am looking at this from the wrong perspective) to go before the Lord with as He will reveal to you His Word, His will and His way to you...and it will be Him to whom you will give an answer...I say this with much love and without pious...I was tossed to and fro on an issue with very good sounding arguements, but it wasn't until I went before the Lord that He spoke to me personally on the issue that my heart was at peace and unshaken because it came from Him to me through the princilpes of His Word by the power of His Holy Spirit...and confirmed by the the joy of final obedience and clear conscience...

Ms Deb2live4Christ:

There's not a clear cut answer, right? The first thing is defining exactly what rock music is, and what sort of environment, which brings more the issue of the moral and spiritual underlying environment, which is more of a clear cut issue, I guess.

We have to remember, those trying to guide us in the ways of God, they to are only saved sinners as we are, and most of them realize this.

We all have our strengths, and we also have our weakness, but pulling together with our church family, we can be a big help to one another. Of course if we tear down one another, them we will never help one another, but destroy each other.

I am proud to say we are not hooking up our TV to Cable TV because of the filth on it the TV and the music.

Filth, yes, so often. Time-wasting filth, too........ Edited by farouk

I can't say that ALL rock is evil but much of it is such as Black Metal, Death Metal, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and several other groups and genres that have been associated with devil worship and anti-Christian morals. Its best to stay away from rock but not judge those who listen.
