How could this mess help strengthen anyone's faith in the infalliblity, inerrancy and inspiration of the word of God?

This sort of thing is something Muslims view as an OBstacle to Christianity being real and true.

While their "holy book" has been translated into other languages, each translation also carries the original alongside it. The original is held to be perfect and if there is ever found any sort of difference between the original and any translation, the original is accepted as perfect.

Meanwhile, Muslims point to the practically uncountable versions of the Bible out there. These versions don't all agree so how can any Christian know they have the actual true Word of God? Christians can't agree upon which ancient texts are accurate and which are not so how can anyone know if they are getting the true Word of God from any of those? Christians don't have the original manuscripts so how can we compare what we have today with what God actually told those who originally wrote it down?

This is a major stumbling block to many Muslims, as well as others. This is also an area the vast majority of Christians can provide no good answer to Muslims or others who confront them on this issue with.

I experienced this when trying to witness to a coworker who was both a lesbian and an alcholoic. She brought up the issue of all the different versions and how someone could be sure. Imagine attempting to explain about "textual evidences" to someone like this while trying to lead them to the Lord.

You are correct about the Muslims. They repeatedly bring up the issue of the multitudes of contradictions between the various versions.

Thanks for those additions, Rick.

Here's another list of English versions including prior to 1611. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet but most of those versions (or translations) prior to 1611 were in Old and Middle English. The common misconception is that the KJV is in Old English which it is not. It is modern English.
