A few days ago I received a personal message asking for a source of material for the Baptist Church. In my reply to the individual I stated, among other things, that I would do more lessons on this Bible study on, "The Local Church."
First, I will have to review the previous lessons to refresh my memory on what passages have been discussed. So, my next lesson may not be soon.
Second, starting next weekend, we are in the process of reporting to churches on our furlough. So, the time between lessons, and responses, may be long.
Third. Since we will be on the road reporting to churches, I will not have much source material, besides the Bible, to use in the lesson. So, let the Bible be our source and not worry too much about Church History, personages, current philosophy, Greek definitions, etc...
Looking forward to your participation, discussions, comments, and helpful additions.
How can you be accurate about a man who refuses to be accurate? For accuracy you have to have known dimensions but his whole mindset is about not being molded to or by anything tangible. He's "free in Christ" after all... unbounded by pesky rules regulations, religion, and labels....And you can be too! for the low low price of a few devotional books every year that all have his picture on them.
Amen Jerry. Jesus did go to hell and preached unto those who died during Noah's flood.
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
God is the judge and He is a jealous God. What Paul is referencing is in Numbers 25 as John Young pointed out. This is in reference to the children of Israel committing idolatry and fornication in the land of Moab. There is one in particular, along with his men, joined himself to Bealpeor. This kindled God's anger. God then tells Moses to hang all the heads of the people and hang them up so that Gods anger will be will be turned away from Israel. So Moses commanded the Judges of Israel to slay every man that was joined unto Baalpeor. The other incident that followed was that a man of Israel brought in a woman that had the plague. One of Aarons sons slew both the man and the woman with a javeline. He pierced the woman through the belly. This killing was to stop the plague from spreading any further, and 24,000 died of the plague.
1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. 2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. 3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. 4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel. 5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.
6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; 8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. 9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.1 12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: 13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel. 14 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.2 15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.
