Sometime I read a paragraph or a poem that really speaks to me. The following poem expresses my feelings. My wife and I spent varying lengths of time, from 90 days to 10 months, each year from 2005 to 2013 in Prague. We worked as volunteers at the International Baptist Theological Seminary. Prague is a wonderful city. It was not damaged in World War II and is the way Europe used to be before that war. The author, Petr Ginz, died in the Terezin Concentration camp. Memories of Prague How long since I last saw The sun sink low behind Petrin hill? With tearful eyes I gazed at you, Prague, Enveloped in your evening shadows. How long since …

He Restoreth My Soul Gently guiding, prompting, leading this wandering sheep back into the fold; By the streams of living waters, in the pathways that are old; Resting, restoring, renewing for my spirit that once was so dry; Graceful showers of blessing falling, Refreshing from the Lord on High. From strength to strength, my Lord is leading, preparing my heart and showing the way; From my shadows into His presence, His Word shines out as clear as day; From weak and faltering footsteps, to steadfast assurance as I pray; His Spirit is there to remind me, His strength is sufficient for today. …

Mother's Day In Heaven (Dedicated to my Mom - I miss you, and look forward to seeing you again!) It’s your first Mother’s Day in Heaven – I'm so thankful that you're not alone; As you behold the face of our Saviour, And are blessed to worship at His throne. Mom, I would love to send you flowers, Though their fading glory could not compare To the beautiful sights and sounds of Heaven, And your very own mansion over there. I never thought so much about Heaven, As I have since you’ve gone home to that place – Oh Mom, I miss you so very much, And I long to see your precious face. You see, this earthly home now seems more emp…

This is the first poem I’ve written in probably 11 years. Angela Trenholm helped me iron out some of the wording this morning. I hope it is a blessing and a reminder where to keep our focus in these trying times. Through Darkened Skies When once bright prospects now seem so dim, And thoughts of the future appear so grim - You feel your steps start to falter and fail; Your life now seems so much more uncertain, You can’t see what lies beyond the curtain - Anchor your faith steadfast within the veil. With storm clouds racing across the sky Sudden waves of doubt and fear draw nigh - So soon your day has turned to darkest night; Testing will come, but don’…

I have found this all too true. Writing is hard work. Perhaps this should have been put under humor. You know often we have a choice of crying or laughing. I prefer laughing.

THE MISTY FLATS Wilt thou stumble, O blinded man? For shadowed mists about thy feet, That wrap around thy head and sweep, The darkness of thy mistful land. The enemy robs thee of thy whelps, Wrapped in tranquil ashen o'er thy sleep, And never mourns thy sunless head nor sees, Such vulpine robbers by thee knelt. Nor heeds alarm from higher ground, When from some clearer hill is seen, The outline of an enemy, That mocked thy denial and plundering, found. How terrifying more thy misty paths! When stumbling at some darkened tree, Wist not it was thine enemy, But crushed some frightening sense of harm. And thou, O Christian, blissfu…

JORDAN As I stand in Jordan’s claven depths, Make, O Lord, my death another’s spring That they might live and joyful sing Of Canaan’s shore and deeper rest. Waters of Adam piled on an heap, Whilst prayers upon my slurring lips And tears upon my baby cheeks Wet rocks beneath my tired feet. Standing still, no place to go? O Lord, a dead man cannot move, But waits thy blessings yet to prove And prays though emptied of my flow. Dry as the rocks beneath my feet But praying as the priests beneath the ark, Though caring naught but to depart When standing ‘side my Jordan heap. …

Surrender Askest Thou me, "Stretch forth thy knife"? Slay my friend and take from me this precious life? Laid still and bound on altar of stone, She there, and I upon a mountain top alone. For this dear friend I prayed, And now my God must take away? Stretch forth my hand and slay? Beloved friend upon this altar laid? Surrender, what does it mean? A terrible, unjust thing it seems, To human eyes who only now sees pain, Of human hearts now rent in twain. I cannot slay! No strength in me remains, For here I am upon his mountain top again. A well worn path of many years, This track of dust and tears. It seems I've felt that every path, …

My Anchor Holds Where troubled sea and billow form, There is a Rock within thy storm. When lovers fall as each new tear, The moments taken and stolen years, There is a cleft below thy waves, A love secure with each new day. When upon life's changing waves, We fear our ship might drift away, An anchor is caste behind thy bow, So little, and no strength. But now, It sinks below a mighty storm, Tossing, betrayal, weariness formed. And finds its rest within a cleft, This riven Rock, and there to rest. Faith, like lonely little anchors. Caste, But knows this Rock to hold them fast. …

Deliver Us, O Lord Deliver us, O Lord, from the snare of the fowler, And silence every noisome pestilence. Quench each fiery dart and take us hence, To deeper rest from hour to hour. Deliver us from fleshly strivings, The torment of our restless souls, That drives away our peace in God, And leaves a soldier's sense of numbing. Deliver us from hardened hearts, That prides a stoic creed, That numbly fights and numbly bleeds, Away each Spirit's sense of love. We would with Thee within the fight, Rest within Thy Spirit, Lord Jesus. Strength to soften, not to harden, The heart that numbed through human might. We would with Thee wit…

Dear Any Godly Pastor Dear Pastor... I am old enough to be your mom! However! I'm NOT too old and I don't have so much more experience in life that I cannot continue to learn. What a blessing it is to hear the instruction of the Word. I have not grown so strong, so knowledgeable, or so wise that I no longer need comfort, encouragement, edification, exhortation, admonition, reproof, rebuke, and correction in righteousness. You see - it never gets old or tiresome to hear the Word with listening ears, ready to receive with an open heart, a message that the Lord has filled your heart with to preach. I sincerely believe that every Spirit-filled message is …

Cherith Thy camp is pitched by Cherith stream, The hamlet of thy love, thy means, And running low the crystal drains away, Sinks into the burning sand, the hardened clay. From its waning freshness thy spirit found its share, And foolish fear has told thee thy Jesus doesn’t care. That little shall drain till nothing left But turbid leagues of hearts bereft. Greater eyes have seen the stream has dried, The fainting spirits died. And comes the voice of One beholding, Guiding words, His new unfoldings. Get thee hence, my will is thy supply. Let Cherith’s blessings die, If on…

It's Only After Roses are so beautiful that we forget that thorns cause pain, We often forget that rainbows only come after the rain. Sometimes the sun is hidden when storm clouds are in view, It’s only after the rose is picked that it will bring great joy to you. It’s only after the storm subsides that peace comes to calm the seas, It’s only when the light turns on that the shadow suddenly flees. Sometimes we only learn, to appreciate the light, After walking through the darkness, in what seems like blackest night. It’s often only when you miss someone that their worth is realized, For iron sharpening iron, is a blessing in disguise. You ma…

Dream Or Reality? Is it just a distant dream, this vision that I see To know my Heavenly Father as a warm reality? To sense the blessed comfort within His precious Word To know His deep compassion behind each word I've heard. To understand the heart that knows the real me To believe that I'm protected, that He's my security To know that He is near, His Spirit is inside me To believe that He will never leave as a strong certainty. To experience the presence of God that evil cannot harm To give all my cares to Him and rest within His arms To feel His joy and fellowship, His love without an end To know God as my Father and as my trusted frie…

This beautiful story was written by a doctor who worked in South Africa... One night I had worked hard to help a mother in the labor ward; but in spite of all we could do, she died leaving us with a tiny premature baby and a crying two-year-old daughter. We would have difficulty keeping the baby alive; as we had no incubator (we had no electricity to run an incubator). We also had no special feeding facilities. Although we lived on the equator, nights were often chilly with treacherous drafts. One student midwife went for the box we had for such babies and the cotton wool that the baby would be wrapped in. Another went to stoke up the fire and fill a hot…

The Old Refiner "He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver" (Mal. 3:3). Our Father, who seeks to perfect His saints in holiness, knows the value of the refiner's fire. It is with the most precious metals that the assayer takes the most pains, and subjects them to the hot fire, because such fires melt the metal, and only the molten mass releases its alloy or takes perfectly its new form in the mould. The old refiner never leaves his crucible, but sits down by it, lest there should be one excessive degree of heat to mar the metal. But as soon as he skims from the surface the last of the dross, and sees his own face reflected, he puts out the fire. -- Arthur…

Immanuel When once I mourned a load of sin; When conscience felt a wound within; When all my works were thrown away; When on my knees I knelt to pray, Then, blissful hour, remembered well, I learned Thy love, Immanuel. When storms of sorrow toss my soul; When waves of care around me roll; When comforts sink, when joys shall flee; When hopeless griefs shall gape for me, One word the tempest's rage shall quell - That word, Thy name, Immanuel. When for the truth I suffer shame; When foes pour scandal on my name; When cruel taunts and jeers abound; When "Bulls of Bashan" gird me round, Secure within Thy tower I'll dwell - That towe…

The Valley Of Faith (Based on Psalm 23) The Lord is my Shepherd. He’s proven faithful throughout the years. Though I walk through death’s dark valley, His grace calmly soothes all my fears. As I closely follow His leading, He provides for my every need. Oh, the waters are so peaceful, And the pastures are rich indeed! When I get weary and heavy laden, When the labour of love takes its toll, I go to the Shepherd for refreshing, And He gently restores my soul. As I lean upon the Shepherd, He guides me in the path that's right. When the shadows seem so gloomy, The Lord is my Lamp and my Light. The Shepherd's name is so preci…

The Lord's Deputy The Lord’s Deputy stands in the night, face covered by the darkness. At the ready the Lord’s Deputy stands, prepared to defend the weak, help the helpless, and protect the innocent. He knows the risk and understands the dangers around him. He knows he may have to pay the ultimate price, the ultimate sacrifice, he knows he may have to give his life. The Lord’s Deputy is not afraid. His heart is prepared; he is wearing his armor. The Armor is special, different from any other kind of armor ever fashioned. It is stronger than any bulletproof vest, harder than any helmet, more powerful than any weapon. The Lord’s Deputy wears this special ar…

Faith To Face Looking through a glass darkly, I find many things hard to explain, But as I steadfastly gaze within God's Word, The Lord makes all things plain. Faith to faith is what I'm living. Day by day, I learn to see, In a life that's so uncertain, I know that Jesus still walks with me. Faith means I learn to trust Him And forget walking by sight. As I'm filled with His peace and wisdom, God's Word lights up the night. Faith to face, it's a tiring journey, Walking through this pilgrim land. Though I cannot see around every corner, I'm clinging tightly to my Saviour's hand. He's preparing me for service, Enabling me t…

In 2005, after my Mom died, I spent time with my family attempting to comfort them by preaching about her saving faith at her memorial. I came back so spiritually dry and thirsty from this time, and was unexpectedly empty. I came across these words in Isaiah during my very next Bible reading and they really soothed my soul. Isaiah 41:17-18 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. As a resu…

Sinking In The Mire Jeremiah 38:6a Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. The prophet Jeremiah's enemies gathered together against him, seeking to put him to death. As a result, he was cast into the dungeon, where he began to sink in the mire. Jeremiah 38:6b And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire. Adversities and afflictions will often seem to rise against us, much like Jeremiah's enemies rose against him. Left with no firm footing, you may find yourself sinking in the mire of despair, ove…
