This was written for/about a friend I sometimes think about at this time of year. The Hope Of Christmas In the midst of my sorrows, troubles and tears, I sought the Lord and He saved me from my fears. In this time when you are overwhelmed by loss, Remember the Saviour who died on the cross – That’s my hope this Christmas. Struggling to overcome my dark addictions, And learning to make some braver decisions; You broke through all those chains that held me so tight, You scattered my darkness because You’re my Light – That’s my hope this Christmas. This Christmas, I know you’re not celebrating, But our reunion’s worth anticipating. My s…

The Lion Of God’s Word I love how the Apostle Paul used many images and comparisons in his preaching and writing to get the truth across to his readers, like in the following verse: 2 Timothy 2:8-9 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. Vine’s Expository Dictionary says this about the word “bound” as used in this passage: “…its ministry, course and efficacy were not hindered by the bonds and imprisonment suffered by the apostle.” Even though Paul was imprisoned and bound, the Word of God was not. …

I found an old poem that I never posted anywhere. Looks like I edited it slightly after I became KJV-only, and I just tweaked a few words right now to make it flow a little better (and not just say "Him"). Chosen In Christ Jesus We deserved wrath, but God showed mercy; We deserved judgement, but He gave grace; Our sins excluded us from His presence - Now reconciled, we can see God’s face. We dwelt in the kingdom of darkness, Enslaved by the chains of our sins; We were dead in our vile trespasses, Until the Lord Jesus Christ entered in. Controlled by the prince of this world, Marred by the depravity of our…

I wrote this poem during a very difficult time in my life. I was facing having to go disabled, losing everything we had, and having to file for bankruptcy. It was also a time when the world thought everything was going to collapse because of Y2K. If we only knew then what we know now! I have a compilation of poetry and short stories that I've written over the years, as well as a couple of books I've written that I'm editing before having them published. I hope this poem is helpful to those who read it. BT In Each Life An Original Poem by Anthony J Lanius ©Copyright October 1999 It’s strange to look back At the years that have passed Whe…

When I Read The Bible Through I supposed I knew my Bible, Reading piecemeal, hit or miss, Now a bit of John or Matthew, Now a snatch of Genesis, Certain chapters of Isaiah, Certain Psalms (the twenty-third), Twelfth of Romans, First of Proverbs - Yes, I thought I knew the Word! But I found that thorough reading Was a different thing to do, And the way was unfamiliar When I read the Bible through. You who like to play at Bible, Dip and dabble, here and there, Just before you kneel aweary, And yawn through a hurried prayer; You who treat the Crown of Writings As you treat no other book - Just a paragraph disjointed, Just a crude…

Call Back If you have gone a little way ahead of me, call back; 'Twill cheer my heart and help my feet along the stony track; And if, perchance, Faith's light is dim, because the oil is low, Your call will guide my lagging course as wearily I go. Call back, and tell me that He went with you into the storm; Call back, and say He kept you when the forest's roots were torn; That when the heavens thundered and the earthquake shook the hill, He bore you up and held you where the very air was still. O friend, call back and tell me, for I cannot see your face; They say it glows with triumph, and your feet bound in the race; But there are mists bet…

Wrestling Until The Break Of Day Alone with God – salvation’s story, Wrestling until the break of day. This is worth the greatest glory, To cling to Jesus come what may. Wrestling, praying, holding on so tight, Like a prince, I won’t let Him go. Transformed by grace throughout the night – Oh how much He must love me so! Running from fear, and troubling trials, Faltering, afraid, stopped in my tracks; From worry, to peace – yet, all the while, Knowing inside there’s no turning back. Wrestling until the darkness shatters, A part of me won’t give up this fight; But it’s not my hold on God that matters: He is wrestling with my soul t…

In the beginning God... - Genesis 1:1 Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. My Name Is I Am I was regretting the past and fearing the future When suddenly my Father was speaking: My Name is I AM. He paused and I waited: He continued. When you live in the past with its regrets and mistakes It is hard for me. I am not there. My name is not I WAS. When you live in the future with its problems and fears It is difficult for me. I am not there. My name is not I WILL BE. When you live in this moment…

Today, I found an old poem I had written in a box that I had in a closet for over 10 years. It only needed a few words tweaked. When so many are focussed on the events of the end times, here is a poem about the central figure - the Lord Jesus Christ. In the same chapter of Revelation (chapter 5), He is portrayed both as a Lamb and a Lion. When This Lion Begins To Roar The Lamb is coming back again - This time it’s not like before: The world will never be the same When this Lion begins to roar. Once meek and lowly, like a Lamb, Riding gently upon a colt; Now with vengeance unrestrained, Like a charging thunderbolt. Once a sacrifice for…

Quietness And Confidence I come to Thee, O Lord, to-night, A glad and trustful child; Thy light has made my darkness light, Thy love my heart beguiled. I came to Thee by sin oppressed, Now many years ago; And I have found that perfect rest Thou only canst bestow. My hand is placed in Thine, my Lord, Thou canst not lead me wrong; I stay my soul upon Thy word, My pilgrim-way along. Some call our life a wilderness, A desert dark and drear; To me this life is nothing less Than Heaven begun down here. They surely cannot know the grace Which from Thy presence flows, Which makes the solitary place To blossom as the rose. …

I Sleep, But My Heart Waketh I sleep, but my heart waketh – my Shepherd is near – The voice of my Beloved is knocking; ’ve grown so comfortable here in my room – Outside, in the cold, I hear Him talking. “Arise, and come away with Me, My love,” He tenderly calls to me, but I waver. Though due to my sin, He withdraws Himself; Yet, in the night air, I still smell His savour. Slowly, I rise, but can’t feel His presence: The dark street seems so desolate and empty; I cannot find where my Beloved has gone – My own lukewarmness made Him depart from me. The watchmen of the city wounded me sore, They tore my veil away and left me senseless; …

Mother's Day In Heaven (Dedicated to my Mom - I miss you, and look forward to seeing you again!) It’s your first Mother’s Day in Heaven – I'm so thankful that you're not alone; As you behold the face of our Saviour, And are blessed to worship at His throne. Mom, I would love to send you flowers, Though their fading glory could not compare To the beautiful sights and sounds of Heaven, And your very own mansion over there. I never thought so much about Heaven, As I have since you’ve gone home to that place – Oh Mom, I miss you so very much, And I long to see your precious face. You see, this earthly home now seems more emp…

Thou God Seest Me Thou God seest me – You are the very God who sees The beginning and the end; Through all the trials I face in life, Jesus, You are my greatest Friend. Thou God seest me – You don’t just see all my situations, You truly know what’s in my heart; And despite all life’s complications, In wisdom, You know just where to start: Thou God seest me – You know my needs before I ask them; You strengthen me when I am weak; In my deepest times of sorrow, You provide the comfort that I seek. Thou God seest me – I need never fear for my future – You are already preparing the way; As a Shepherd, You are guiding, And my p…

To Him That Overcometh There are wondrous rewards that the Bible has promised, There are precious crowns that are waiting to be won – But all the blessings that the Lord has offered, Are for those who are trusting by faith in God’s Son. There’s a world system that is risen up against us, Controlled by that wicked spirit, Satan, that hates our Lord; There’s a spiritual battle for our souls that is raging – But to give in to defeat or compromise we can’t afford. To be an overcomer means you trust the Saviour that has died; Upon your account of sin, His precious blood has been applied; When you place your faith in Jesus Christ and His death on C…

Undertake For Me Jesus, I feel so overwhelmed – Won’t you undertake for me? Exchange these burdens of my heart For the sweetness of Your peace. I cast these cares upon You, Lord – I cannot hold them anymore; They are like the waves upon the sea, Relentless against the shore. I roll these troubles unto You, I cannot bear them though I’ve tried; I let them fall down around Your feet, With all these tears that I’ve cried. Exchange all these troubles, Lord, For the joy that is Yours alone, I place them all into Your arms, As I worship around Your throne. I will take Your yoke upon me, Jesus – Oh, it makes for such a lighter lo…

All My Springs Are In You Like the children of Israel, all my springs are in You, O Lord; You are the fount of living waters, my delight is in Your Word. You are all that I ever needed, all my desires are in You alone; You loved me from the beginning; Jesus – You are my eternal home. My life was so vain without You, and brought such emptiness and fear; From the whirlwind of confusion, in love and grace You drew me near: You reached down to lift me up, as You regarded my low estate; With the shield of Your salvation, Your gentleness hath made me great. This I recall to my mind, all of Your mercies which are from old; Perfect peace which flows li…

Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Morning, January 28 "Perfect in Christ Jesus." Colossians 1:28 Do you not feel in your own soul that perfection is not in you? Does not every day teach you that? Every tear which trickles from your eye, weeps "imperfection"; every harsh word which proceeds from your lip, mutters "imperfection." You have too frequently had …

Must Mountain (Or, ?When ?Maybe? Turns to ?Must??) In four different styles. l I walked through the valley of ?Maybe?, And waded the swamp of despair; Looked for the hope of the lily, But found that it was not there! I fell in the pot-hole of depression, And forded the creek of doubt; Ploughed through the jungle of Sorrow, Looking for the elusive way out! I was lost in the Wilderness of frustration, Circling round and round, Ignoring the map I had with me, Heeding no vision nor sound; ll A mountain loomed mightily before me, But too tired to make the great climb, I camped at the base in a woeful place, Amid an oasis of slime! Up the mou…

I have been sharing some of my poems this last year during the Sunday services. Here is one of mine that is worth thinking about. What is important to you? What do you boast about? Boasting In The Lord So many will boast of their status and wealth – For too many that is all that’s worth living; I’d rather boast in my spiritual health – I’ll rejoice that I am saved and forgiven! So many will boast in who and what they know – Their connections are the things they do treasure; I would rather boast in the Lord Jesus Christ – His Word is my only sure guide and measure! So many will boast in the things they have made – As if this life was the en…

“I counted my years and found that I have less time to live from here on than I have lived up to now. I feel like that child who won a packet of sweets: he ate the first with pleasure, but when he realized that there were few left, he began to enjoy them intensely. I no longer have time for endless meetings where statutes, rules, procedures and internal regulations are discussed, knowing that nothing will be achieved. I no longer have time to support the absurd people who, despite their chronological age, haven't grown up. My time is too short: I want the essence, my soul is in a hurry. I don't have man…

Why Wait Until Tomorrow? Another year is now over And there’s a new one on the way With some fresh New Year’s Resolutions And bright promises to make. So many things you wanted to do, So many bad habits to throw away. So many hopeful new horizons Just waiting over the way. All the could’ves, would’ves, should’ves And all the things you wanted to say. But – why wait until tomorrow, When you can begin today? Why wait for another year to pass by, For twelve more months to fly away? When God’s mercies are new every morning. He gives us a new beginning every day. So why wait until tomorrow, When you can begin anew today? P…

O Save Us Now Before God made the world, redemption was planned; In the fullness of time, God became a man. From Heaven, God’s Son came; was in a manger laid; The Christ had arrived – soon our sin debt would be paid. Simeon in the Temple, and Anna nearby, The shepherds in the field, knew the Saviour was nigh. The wise men saw the star as it shone from the sky; They followed it far to the King from on High. To a world darkened by sin The light of hope is shining in, The Promised Son has appeared, The Saviour is now here – O save us now! Years have passed by; this child has grown into a man; Now it was time to fulfill God’s wondrous …

Numbers In The Bible Series 61 - The Shepherd The Shepherd (This Devotional by Kate is included in this book as a follow up to #6, The Nine Cares Of A Shepherd) In yesterday’s devotional, we saw how God uses the medium of speech for His Word to be communicated to His people. Is it any wonder then that the Lord would compare Himself to a shepherd? Many years ago, I did a study on the job of a shepherd in biblical times. This comparison of the shepherd to our Lord is an absolute blessing! I pray you will receive a blessing today. Did you know that the shepherd speaks to his sheep? The sheep actually recognize their own shepherd’s voice and won’t respon…
