Our son, Christopher, being only age 17, was required to pass a GED before he could join the Army because he was homeschooled, and since we weren't under an umbrella school, he had no proof he did the work, although he passed the military entrance exam with flying colors!! Well, not only did he pass his GED, he was the only person in the group to complete the test, including the essay question, and only miss ONE question on the entire exam. Regardless of all of this, because he has a GED instead of a "real" high school education, his pay will be about $1000.00 less than someone who can barely read or write their own name but got that hard-earned "diploma." He was…

The Separation of Education and State by Jacob G. Hornberger by Jacob G. Hornberger Americans, like most people around the world, have become so accustomed to the role that government plays in educating children that the idea of separating education from the state usually comes as a complete shock to them. While everyone is aware of the ever-growing problems associated with public schooling, the answer for most people is the standard one: "The system needs reform." Yet decade after decade, as reforms are implemented, new bond issues passed, new schools built, and new schoolteachers hired, the problems remain, only to be addressed with the same answer: "The system nee…

SOUTHERN BAPTIST EXIT STRATEGY: LET OUR CHILDREN GO! Nicholas Jackson May 19, 2006 NewsWithViews.com All Eyes on Greensboro, NC In the year 2006, never has there been such a clear antithesis between those who love our God, our country and our children, and those who wish to destroy our God, our country and our children. Nowhere is this battle being fought more aggressively and fiercely than in the halls of our government (public schools). Federal circuit court judges held in November 2005 in Fields v. Palmdale that "parents have no constitutional right ... to prevent a public school from providing its students with whatever information it wishes to prov…

I am new here, and I will admit, I didn't read through each and every post on the homeschool forum. I just glanced at them and read a few. I'm just wondering, is there anyone on here whose kids attend public schools? :)

What are the pros of that particular curriculum? 4. What are the cons of that particular curriculum? 5. What is a typical school schedule like for your family? Thanks.

Any of you have or had a child who has difficulty reading? I'm open to suggestions for a middle/high schooler who reads slowly, comprehension is poor, and the mind wanders. I have had to constantly stay on this one, but the progress is coming so slowly. This child is about 2-3 grades behind in comprehension and speed.

Exodus Mandate Applauds ABC 20/20 Special With John Stossel Are American Kids Stupid? That's the question ABC's John Stossel will ask on 20/20 Friday night, January 13, as he describes the academic failure of America's public schools when compared with schools in other industrialized nations. For many years Exodus Mandate has been warning Christian parents and pastors that the government's "public" schools are destroying our children spiritually, morally and academically. Over the last two years many Christian leaders have come to agree that the public schools are indeed cauldrons of spiritual and moral pathologies. For example, the Southern Baptist Convention's lea…

Top 10 Mistakes of Homeschoolers by Jonathan Lindvall I am very thankful the Lord spoke to my heart, as a single man back in 1972, that when He gave me children I was to teach them myself. At the time I thought I was unique. I had never heard of anyone besides foreign missionaries without access to schools teaching their own children. It didn't occur to me that the Lord might be speaking the same word to many others. Later, after marrying and having our first child, my wife and I encouraged a few other families to teach their own children. We even started a Christian School ministry to facilitate this (we have never had a campus--all the students are…

Group Urges Christians Not to Abandon Gov't-Run Education System By Jim Brown and Jody Brown January 10, 2006 (AgapePress) - While a growing number of Christian families are choosing to remove their children from public schools, an Alabama-based group is urging Christians to embrace public education and try to improve it as best as they can. Redeem the Vote! is enlisting the help of Christian rock musicians to encourage Christians to spend more money on public education. It is also pushing for a bill in the Alabama legislature that would require schools offering Bible electives to use a textbook published by the Bible Literacy Project. Redeem the Vote! says that…

Hey, I was wondering what you all thought about Bju satalite school or abeka's video school. I'm looking for a way to make school more challanging for Bethany. as a side note I just have to share this. During Christmas break Bethany told matt that she didn't see the need to do school any more because she knew God wanted her to be a missionary and she already knows how to read....   she was quite serious. We didn't laugh then but had a good one when we were alone later. Of course we explained to her that school was God's will for her life right now. She understands and has a much better look at school now. I would just like to make it more f…

Our state homeschool group tests with ITBS and I was wondering if anyone knows of any sites that help with preparing for the tests. I just received "Scoring High" which is a test prep program that I ordered through mathworkbook.com, but I would like some online sites that I could use everyday as study supplements.

I saw this advertised on Radio Liberty and wondered if any of you guys had heard of it. http://www.robinsoncurriculum.com/ All that is needed is the 22-CD set and a set of Saxon math texts. Dr. Robinson, the author is a scientist and a Christian who uses the KJV (I don't know what demonination he is). I've read good reviews, but there are parts I'm not so sure about. Here is a quote from the website: [quote] The Bible is not a required part of our formal curriculum. We have a family Bible reading before bed each evening, and we discuss elements of Christianity as they happen to arise in our everyday lives. Like Isaac Newton, no one in our family ever…

If your child has problems adding, convert the math problem into dollars and cents. If a child does not understand how to figure out 125+395 is, change it to $1.25+$3.95. You can use toy quarters, toy dimes, toy nickels toy pennies and dollars, old coupons or coupons you will not use for this. Coupons, and toy money can also be used to help a child unserstand percentages, and fractions. I learned some of this when I was teaching my Honorary Niece Kayla to add before she entered KIndergarten. Her Sister Jamie was my teacher's aide. I took the math problems 0+0 to 0+12 to 1+0 to 1+ 12 to 2+0 to 2+12. Kayla did well with the easy problems, and with Jamie's and my help was…

I received this from a friend, and was asked to pass it on. It is self explanatory. This is not an e-mail chain letter or any garbage like that. This is a warning about something very real. I know both individuals in this letter. ****************** Dear Friends, I have lately had calls from a man pretending to be interested in our church. He quickly starts telling me about how he disciplines his children and then asks about your methods. He is really "creepy." I have posted messages in the Christian forums and clubs that I am a member of to warn others of this man. To my surprise, I have found at least 3 other ladies that have gone through what I did. He appa…
