I was listening to a radio broadcast by the late Dr. Al Smith ( http://www.livinghymns.org/bio.htm ) in which he was describing interviews he had with mid-20th century hymnwriters like John W. Peterson and others. I was wondering if someone were to do such an interview today, who can you think of as someone to be interviewed? This would be circa 1950 to today.

Before yesterday, I made a new track, since I had a little time on my hands. My brother got the idea of playing it while they were showing the slide show of photos from my dad's life at church yesterday (even though I didn't write it for that) and my mom thought it was a good idea. So, they played it yesterday, and though I was kind of nervous about it, seems that most people liked it. Well, I decided to post a link here if anybody wanted to listen to it. I will warn you guys though that it has at two points a distorted brass section which sounds a bit similar to an electric guitar, but no beats (meaning drums) or anything. Hope you guys don't mind that. I didn't want to …

Hymns vs. Praise Choruses An old farmer went to the city one weekend and attended a big city church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was. "Well," said the farmer, "It was good. They did something different, however. They sang praise choruses instead of hymns." "Praise choruses?" said his wife. "What are those?" "They're sort of like hymns, only different," said the farmer. "What's the difference?" asked the wife. The farmer said, "Well, if I said, 'Martha, the cows are in the corn,' that would be a hymn. But if I said, 'Martha, Martha, Martha, Oh Martha, MARTHA, MARTHA, the cows, the big cows, the brown cows, the black cows, the white cows, the …

This statement by RezPreacher brought to my mind another discussion I had with a former pastor (he went liberal, and I had to dis-invited him to my ordination). Anyway, the discussion went something like this: Missionaries from the western world force their native converts to sing Western hymns, like "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Because of that, the converts weren't experiencing the true joy of Christ, because no hymns were being written in their native music styles. So, not only were the new converts learning a new way of life, but also had to learn a new worship style. I thinkRick Warren teaches something like this, or at least my former pastor referred t…

If your church displays the words of the songs you sing on a screen, what software do you use? I am starting next week to run the slides once a month, and we use SundayPlus. I have used Powerpoint and OpenOffice before, but never this one. I know there are a few other Open Source software geared toward churches (Bibles and music preloaded, etc.). What do you use and how do you like it? After next Sunday I will try to post about SundayPlus.

Words and music by hank williams sr. I wandered so aimless life filed with sin I wouldn't let my dear saviour in Then jesus came like a stranger in the night Praise the Lord I saw the light. Chorus I saw the light I saw the light No more darkness no more night Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight Praise the Lord I saw the light. Just like a blind man I wandered along Worries and fears I claimed for my own Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight Praise the Lord I saw the light. Chorus I was a fool to wander and astray Straight is the gate and narrow the way Now I have traded the wrong for the right Praise the Lord I saw the light. …

Is it proper to use hymnbooks in church? Or, it is improper as it gives you that "High Church" feeling many Catholic and Protestant churches have?

Mods, please feel free to close this thread if you want. I don't mean to stir up trouble by bringing up a locked topic, but there was a question asked in another thread that was closed about the meaning of a song and I just wanted to clear up some confusion. "The Great Speckled Bird" wasn't written by Roy Acuff (as someone referred to as "some country singer"), but by the Reverend Guy Smith. It is based on Jeremiah 12:9, which says "Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her; come ye, assemble all the beasts of the field, come to devour." The passage as a whole tells us that, although the wicked surround God's people, God will …

I read this article that studied the importance of Congregational Singing in church and I wondered how important is it to your congregation? Some churches have congregations that can really SING! while others prefer to sit while a choir of a certain few people sing. How does your church deal with singing/music? Here is a link to the PDF article that piqued my interest... etd-submit.etsu.edu/etd/theses/available/etd-0330102-011956/unrestricted/BennettR041902.pdf -

Has anyone heard of the Outreach Quartet before? I have one of their albums, called Saved, Saved, Saved. You can listen to samples of their songs on the site. It's quite unique, I've never listening to a acapella group before, and to be honest I didn't notice they were acapella for a little while, as I listen to music a lot (basically if I'm on my PC I am listening to music) but I rarely pay a lot of attention to it. Very nice voices, and beautiful songs. My favorite by far is: What did He do* Anyone know of similar groups? -Alen *Only sample, goes for 30 seconds.

The Blood What brought forgiveness to me What washed me so completely What made me worthy in Your eyes What power broke the chains of sin And gave me hope again What raised my dying soul to life CHORUS It was the blood It was the blood The blood You shed for me It was the blood It was the blood The blood You shed for me Lord, I was powerless to Defend myself before You I could not plead my case alone When justice called for everything What sacrifice could bring Freedom for my captive soul. CHORUS Mercy, sweet mercy Covers my soul Over and over Forever will flow It was the blood Precious blood Nothin

Does anyone have the words to a song that I really like.... Not sure how it starts, but it says "there's a sweet sweet Spirit in this place, and I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord." We sang it in chapel at HAC, and I can't remember the rest :

Great Speckled Bird (Roy Acuff) What a beautiful thought I am thinking Concerning the Great Speckled Bird; Remember her name is recorded On the pages of pure shining gold. Al the other birds flocking 'round her And she is despised by the squad; But the Great Speckled Bird in the bible Is one with the great church of God. All the other churches are against her They envy her glory and fame; They hate her because she is chosen, And has not denied Jesus' name. Desiring to lower her standard They watch ev'ry move that she makes They try to find fault with her teachings, But they cannot find any mistakes. She is spreading her wings for a journey She is goi…

I thought this was kinda cool. Taking a secular song and transforming it into what else...the Power of God. Power of God Parody of "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News References: Gen 1; Ps 66:3; Jer 10:12; Matt 8:23-27 Parody Lyrics by Randall Hyde (Verse 1) The power of God is an amazing thing, Took just a week to create everything. He made man, in the image of His bod, More than amazing, that's the power of God. (Verse 2) Made all the planets, you and me, Calms all the waves, of a mighty sea. Looked O'er creation, said "this is good." The power of God, it's so misunderstood. (Chorus) You don't need money, Don't take fame, Don't need a cre…
