What is the significance of forty days and nights in scripture? There was Noah and the rain, Moses on the mount, Moses leading the children of Israel in wilderness forty years, Elijah and traveling on one meal for that time and our Lord Jesus Christ fasted forty days and nights in the wilderness . Your thoughts or better yet God's thoughts!

“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” (John 15:7) The precious promise in this verse has been an inspiration to the faithful down through the centuries. It becomes even more amazing when attention is paid to the original Greek language in which it was written. Abiding implies a close per... More... View the full article

“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.” (Hebrews 12:15) Bitterness and a bitter spirit should never characterize a person who has experienced the saving grace of God through Jesus Christ. No matter how seriously one may have been wronged, if he has known God&r... More... View the full article

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8) It is nearly impossible these days to turn on the TV, go shopping... “If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.” (1 John 2:29) This is the first of seven occurrences of the phrase “born of God,” or “born of him,” in the little epistle of 1 John. If anyone wishes to know how to recognize one who has truly been “born again,” these seven descrip... More... View the full article

“In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.” (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9) Many critics have decried what they contend is the Bible’s inconsistency. The Old Testame... More... View the full article

How Grace Generates Generosity and Joy One of the most amazing accounts in all of the gospels is found in Luke 19 when a greedy little traitor named Zacchaeus has a saving encounter with Jesus. When I think of Zacchaeus, I always think of Gollum—the sniveling, back-stabbing, mutant Hobbit of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Gollum only thinks of himself and getting back “my precious” at any cost—no matter who he has to betray or kill. Zacchaeus was a tax collector who made his living by selling out his nation, leveraging Roman authority, and extorting his fellow Jews. He was rich and powerful, but he was also hated and lonely. It was this spiritual emptiness that drove him …

“Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.” (John 14:19) We who believe on Christ have the promise of everlasting life because He lives, and we see Him by faith. Christ Himself is “our life” (Colossians 3:4), in fact. He is the very... More... View the full article

“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:5) Our text instructs us that we, as a corporate church and as individuals, are designed for the purpose of offering up acceptable sacrifices to God. These are not animal sacrifices as before but “sp... More... View the full article

“For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.” (Jeremiah 4:3) Fallow ground is ground that has been plowed and readied for sowing but then is withheld and allowed to lie useless and unproductive. God, through His prophet, had to rebuke His people not only because they had left their prepared gr... More... View the full article

“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate th... “The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.” (Psalm 34:16) This is another clear, basic, often-repeated message of Scripture. Why is it that many of God’s people try to get around this fact? God does not tolerate evil. He does not approve or overlook the deeds of wickedness. Although God demonstrate... More... “Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good: seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.” (View the full article

“The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. “I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.” (Psalm 34:4-6) Seeking the Lord is a familiar theme throughout the prayers and songs of the Psalms, an... More... “I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.” (Psalm 34:1-3) This is an open praise. David is “bragging” about God... More... View the full article

“And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.” (Genesis 28:15) This is the first of many promises of God’s unfailing presence with those who trust Him. The words of our text were spoken to Jacob o... More... View the full article

I've debated on whether to post this, because it's been covered...and covered...and covered...and recovered on this forum already. No one's mind has been changed either way (that I'm aware of), so I feel that I'm posting this in vain...but I'm posting it anyway. 1. The Great Commission Do we still believe that the Great Commission applies for us today? The Great Commission is comprised of 3 things... Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, (aka...preach the gospel in Mark 16) baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: an…

I have a question about eternal security and the early church. I have been wondering about this for quite some time, but i just can't find a straight- forward answer. I've read many websites, forums, old texts, greek terminology in the Bible, etc. and i just can't find anything that is pro-eternal security, from anywhere in the earliest church age. What my pastor and one of the teachers at my church told me, was that the reason it looked like people didn't believe in eternal security in the early church, was because it didn't fit the Catholic doctrine, which was who was domineering at the time. But, via my research, i have seen that there appears to be no evidence, …

“Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.” (Psalm 104:23) The 104th Psalm is a beautiful psalm of creation and the Flood, supplemented by God’s providential care of His creatures in the post-Flood world. Our text makes man’s activity seem almost incidental in the grand scope of God’s activities on behalf of His whole c... More... View the full article

What is subjective separation, and what is biblical separation? I believe in one and reject the other. Let’s break it down. Biblical separation is discerning and emphasizes what the Bible clearly says. Subjective separation is undiscerning, and creates issues where the Bible is silent or where God gives space for conscience. In this post, I’m going to assume you believe that Christians are called to grow in practical holiness (forsaking sin); and that Christians are called to protect the pure doctrine of God’s word. (See note 1 in the postscript.) Yet, how should we handle matters of conscience and areas of subjectivity? What about believers that differ from us in areas…
