We often find ourselves unfulfilled with our circumstances, whether those circumstances are external or internal. Maybe our perspective is the answer. Take the long view through the eyes of faith. The short view is that the Lord has not returned yet. The long view is that He will return and the time draws nigh. The short view is that we haven't accomplished our goals. The long view is that we need to be patient and stablish our hearts. The short view is that the saints aren't all we had hoped. To live above with saints we love, ah that will be glory. To live below with saints we know, now that's another story. The long view is to let the Lord handle that. The short view i…

It's not my rule, it's how God set it up. The only way to support woman pastors is to quote more people than Scripture.

When responding to the Pharisees' request for a sign, why do you suppose the Messiah made the specific point that He would be in the "heart of the earth" for 3 days and 3 nights?

The article below is significantly longer than most blog posts. In fact, it’s actually a small booklet I have recently written relative to questions I’ve been asked regarding funding new church plants. If you would prefer to read this as a PDF, you can download the booklet here. In whichever way you read—booklet or blog post—I pray these thoughts are a helpful contribution to needful discussions and to forward momentum in planting gospel-preaching, Baptist churches. Introduction There are two years of ministry that stand out as launching forth moments in my mind. The first is 1986 when the Lord led my wife, Terrie, and me to Lancaster, California, where a small and …

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Jerry Vines for the Spiritual Leadership Podcast. Some of the audio and technical quality was not up to the quality we desired, so we held on posting it. However, I felt the content of this interview is relevant and important, so we are posting today in hopes that it will be a help and encouragement to you. In this episode, Dr. Vines and I discussed ministry trends and his commitment to Bible truth. I enjoyed our discussion and hope you will enjoy it as well. Revelation 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. We all should know that if our "sun" is a "star", and a whole bunch of these "suns" fell to earth it would be instantly vaporized. Is it really referring to asteroids or comets? Bear with me here. What we call "food", the King James calls "meat" and what we call "meat" the King James calls "flesh". There are many other examples of meanings of words which have "drifted" over time like this. The reason I ask is because this just came across my Facebook feed.....and let me first say, I do not hold to anything that Neil Degrasse …

A self-righteous person is someone who strongly believes in their own moral superiority and constantly seeks to assert it over others. They tend to exhibit certain characteristics, including: Moral superiority: Self-righteous individuals consider themselves to be morally superior to others. They often judge and criticize people who do not meet their standards or beliefs. Judgmental attitude: They have a tendency to be highly judgmental, constantly scrutinizing the actions, choices, and beliefs of others. They often see themselves as the ultimate arbiters of what is right and wrong. Lack of empathy: Self-righteous people may struggle to empathize with o…

Job 19:23-29 ¶ Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book! 24 That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever! 25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: 26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: 27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me. 28 But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me? 29 Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment. Job is th…

I don't know how your church practices baptism, but in every church that I have joined, the candidate must present a public profession of faith. Then the pastor says, "Upon your profession of faith in Christ, I baptize you, my brother, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Buried in the likeness of his death and raised to walk in newness of life." Baptist churches have always admitted only regenerate members. Other institutional and state churches killed Baptists for this practice. Church discipline handled the problems and the restoration of ill-behaved members. This is the way to ensure that unregenerate people cannot become members with voting ri…

On this episode of the Spiritual Leadership Podcast, I sat down with one of my closest friends and mentors in the ministry, Dr. Don Sisk. We discussed an article he recently wrote for the Baptist Voice magazine and ministry127.com on the topic of disagreement without disunity. His thoughts on ministry relationships was a blessing to me, and I trust it will be an encouragement to you as well. Dr. Sisk’s original article is here If you cannot view this video in your email or RSS reader, click here.) Hebrews 6:4-6 was a passage that worried me for a long time until someone showed me the importance of the the first 4 words, "for it is impossible". Here is the passage. Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. Notice the descriptions of people that follows "for it is impossible". Each phrase is joined by the conjunction 'and' …

1 Corinthians 2:15-16 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:1-5 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? 2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? Philippians 1:9-11 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all j…

The English language has rules; they are called grammar. Is it important for understanding your Bible? Let me start with a question as an example. Do you like reading about the apostle Peter as much as me? No wait. Do you like reading about the apostle Peter as much as I? Which is correct? The answer is "I" not "me". How to tell. Supply the understood verb, in this case 'do', to the sentence and the answer becomes clear. Do you like reading about the apostle Peter as much as me do? Or do you like reading about the apostle Peter as much as I do? "Me do" just sounds stupid. I believe it is important to know what a verse says before you explain what it means. I am hoping for…

The message of popular culture is clear: “You have what it takes. Dig deep, persevere hard, and reach for the stars.” There’s value in encouraging people to have confidence to seek to make a difference with their lives. But the whole message of self-sufficiency is misleading. Conversely, mature, clear-minded Christians wake up every day with an awareness that they don’t have what it takes to make a success of the day. They know that they can’t be and do all that God has for them that day or the rest of their lives without the grace of God. There is nothing that reveals our need for God’s grace like a trial. One of the very reasons God allows difficulties and even fa…

I realize this may be a somewhat questionable question because of the topic, but I feel it's necessary to ask. Here's some back story before I ask the question. I'm an assistant pastor at my church. I'm also the RU director. I had a guy, last year, get busted for being in town in drag. People told me they saw him. I confronted him, not in a harsh way, but in a Biblical way. He told me it was true. I've been working closely with this guy for a year now. Very few people knew about it. He came to me later and thanked me for confronting him and said the Lord was dealing with him. I thought "amen, that's what we are supposed to do." He's got 15 months sober from a…

Telling anyone one that you’re a non-denominational Christian. This tells me, that this Christian, is open to making changes at any moment, willing to accept or not accept, depending on where they stand that day. I believe talking in tongues today but not tomorrow. A little bit confusing in my opinion.

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one (John 10:28-30 KJV). Revelation That Leads to Salvation All people, everywhere, experience revelation from God about Himself. “”For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse" (Rom. 1:20). Some receive clearer revelation than others. Jesus said, “”If I had not come and spoke…

In the closed poll for the meaning of "Heart of the earth" in Matthew 12:40 there were no votes for the tomb and 4 votes for other. I wonder what some of the other meanings might be.

It’s hard to envision a more grace-filled response and Spirit-anointed outcome to a trial than Ron Hamilton’s when he lost his eye to cancer. You may already know the story: As a young husband, Ron was diagnosed with cancer behind his left eye. The surgery to remove the cancer also resulted in the loss of his eye. After surgery, he found that kids gravitated toward him wearing a patch. They were full of questions, and some called him “Patch the Pirate.” It was though this tragedy—and Ron’s trust in the Lord through it—that the ministry of “Patch the Pirate” began. Over the past forty-five years now, Ron and Shelly Hamilton have produced over forty children’s musical au…

You’ve heard the maxim, “Teamwork makes the dream work.” There is much truth to this statement, and no one modeled teamwork better than the apostle Paul. Over the years at Lancaster Baptist, I have preached verse-by-verse through many books of the Bible. This past Sunday, I began a new preaching series through Romans. A few years ago, we did three series through the pastoral epistles: 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus. (The expanded outlines for these pastoral epistles are now in a book, set to release next week as part of the Striving Together Study Library.) Throughout Paul’s pastoral epistles, we repeatedly see the necessity and value Paul placed on teamwork in minis…

I just heard a Calvinist in my Facebook feed, John McArthur, saying that God hates sinners. I've heard and seen this debated many times. Some say God hates the sin but loves the sinner and others say that God hates both and use various scriptures to prove it either way. But what Mr. McArthur says doesn't agree with one thing. Jesus Christ Himself told us that, to be like God, you have to "Love your enemies". So, if someone does something to you, in a really serious way, you are commanded by God to do something that he wouldn't even do Himself? By that logic, you would be taking a higher road than God would. I don't think so. God says his ways are higher than our ways. So…

A friend of mine, nice guy and great to do business with, posts a lot of calvinistic memes on Facebook. I had to address this one, this morning: Revelation 3:20 says you have to open the door before he'll come in.

This is a subtle thing, but very common when people teach salvation. When praying to believe in Jesus .. receiving Him... Many tracts have 'i now commit my life to you' or 'i now turn from my sin and...' or 'i put you on the throne of my life'.. Putting self into salvation. Making turning from sin... A work of effort. Usually they also have believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.. so people stil get saved through reading it ..but there is the subtle thing of having works 'back loaded ' into salvation.

Over the past several years, the term woke has been used to describe people who have been awakened to the injustices of society, particularly in regards to racism. Many Christians, committed to displaying God’s heart for the oppressed, have eagerly embraced the term. The “woke movement,” however, has grown much larger than the early definition of the term. There is an agenda driving it that is anti-Christian and steeped in anti-God philosophies. A working definition of wokism is impossible since even its strongest proponents apply the word in fluid settings. As defined by Merriam-Webster, to be woke means to be “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and is…
