Hi, I'm an independent fundamental Baptist, and I'm new to this site. I was reading through some topics and it seems there is a lot of confusion on the term "repent." Sometimes, after hearing a phrase over and over, we tend to just "believe" that it must be true because we've heard it so often. Such is the case with the term "repent of your sins" or "turn from your sins" when it references salvation. No where in the Bible does it say to "repent of your sins" for salvation. The word repent means "to turn" or "to change one's mind" and always means in the opposite direction / choice. For example, Exod 32:14 "And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought…

Did Jesus turn the water into fermented wine? Luke 5:39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better. John 2:9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. Which wine is the "good wine"?

Just wanted to encourage everyone to read through the Reese Chronological Bible at last once. The dating is not "perfect" and many times it is a "best guess" as to the date, but it sure adds to your Bible Study. - Read all four Gospels placed in chronological order, read the happenings of the Northern and Southern Kingdoms in parallel, read the Psalms placed in the narrative at the time they were written, etc.

First, I'll have to explain where I'm coming from on this. As many on this forum know, I grew up in an extremely Arminianistic environment. From a young age though (around 14), I got interested in IFB theology because it seemed more Biblical to me than the ECB (Evangelical Christian Baptist) theology I was taught which is actually rather diverse and sometimes contradictory. Though there are a few high profile ECBs who are Calvinistic, for the most part, ECBs are Arminianistic. In any case, I don't care for any label, whether it be Calvinist, Baptist, IFB, ECB, whatever; my main pursuit is the truth. After much research, I've come to the conclusion that Calvinism is very l…

I guess I never noticed this before but saw it today when thinking about the Daniel hijack to Suzy's thread... Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael & Azariah were eunuchs. Daniel 1:3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; 4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. 5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's m…

I would like for this to be a civil discussion. The problem is that an IFB can mean many sort of things. For example, this website is and mostly IFB, but some say we are too IFB while other state we are not IFB enough. Where in your mind should Online Baptist/We draw the line for IFB?

Lev 21:5 ¶ They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh. Psa 133:1-3 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore. 1Ch 19:5 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed…

Do the Scriptures teach word preservation or do they teach thought or meaning preservation? Terms relating to Bible doctrine should be defined and explained. From my reading and study of the Scriptures, I see the Scriptures teaching a preservation of the exact, specific words that proceeded out of the mouth of God by inspiration to the prophets and apostles. According to their preface to the 1611 and according to their writings, I understand the KJV translators to maintain or teach that the preservation of the Scriptures concerned the original language words given to the prophets and apostles. Would the scriptural teaching that no words of men were to be adde…

CHURCH OF CHRIST [Comments in brackets by Pastor David Warner - Faithful Baptist Church Omak, WA] In a book entitled ‘Where The Saints Meet’, Mac Lynn states that the total number of churches of Christ in the United States and her territories is about 13,410 with a total membership of 1,277,004. They believe that they are the only true Christian church and that they can trace their roots back to that first church in Jerusalem (sounds just like we independent Baptists…sort of). The Church of Christ claims to reserve for itself the only scriptural name for a New Testament church, although the term "church of Christ" is found nowhere in the Bible. “We are undenomi…

Sort of interested in hearing what everyone's thought is on this topic. For the record, I am NOT a BB'er, but I am interested in hearing their perspective. Any of you out there?

I have long questioned the translation of apostasia to "falling away" in the King James version. I have learned that the 5 English translations prior to the King James rendered the word "departure". The King James reads: Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; The word apostasia was directly brought from the Koine Greek into the English language long before the King James version (changing the ia into y). To me, the correct translation would refer to the rapture of the Church and then the revealing of the Antichrist. I feel that the dece…

Homosexuality is a rapidly growing trend within the CCM movement. It is not a new thing, but formerly it was fairly hidden. In the 1997 edition of The Gospel Sound, which first appeared in 1971, Anthony Heilbut said, “The gospel church has long been a refuge for gays and lesbians, some of whom grew up to be among the greatest singers and musicians.” In 1998 gospel star Kirk Franklin said that “homosexuality ... is a problem today in gospel music--a major concern--and everybody knows it” (Church Boy, pp. 49, 50). More recently Douglas Harrison, a homosexual who grew up Southern Baptist, said, “... you can’t swing a Dove Award without hitting upon evidence of the long…

Here is a scripture where Jesus is speaking: Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come [again] unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. (John 14:28) Clearly Jesus speaks that his Father is greater. Therefor he can't be compared to Jehovah, can he? Can someone explain me this question: is Jesus inferior to his Father on earth only, or in heaven also?

In response to a request from the now 20-page John Piper thread, I thought we'd move some of the 'free-will vs predestination' discussion here. Tons of stuff were flying around, but one key verse that a number of people were interested in discussing was 2 Thessalonians 2:13: That will be the focus of this thread. I didn't have time to bring over any posts from either side of the discussion, so if anyone feels like doing that please do. It would also be helpful to have a list of the verses cited by each side. I made a list of the 'predestination side during the last thread: 2 Thessalonians 2:13 and 1 Corinthians 1:26-29; as well as 1 Thessalonians 1:4; Acts 13:48;…
